We care about where our bags come from! We know that you do too. Join us. We can make a difference!
There are memories attached to the items that we wear and use: the lucky shoes that helped you pass an exam, the power tie that helped you nail a job interview, or the purse you took out on that first date with your boyfriend or husband. Yet, it’s no surprise that many of these items were made in shops with poor working conditions. The JootStrap bag is different, in that the joy it gives you flows back through to everyone who was involved in creating it.
The story of JootStrap started in a business school classroom, where four of us came together out of a mutual desire to build a business with a conscience. Today, we are well on our way to building that business, having sold over 100 bags. But we need your help to take it to the next level.
Our founder, Suman Datta, grew up in four different continents, providing him with a unique vantage point for viewing the many different walks of life that exist around the world. He has seen the grinding poverty, as well as the striking resourcefulness and ingenuity of Africa and Asia. He has had first hand experience with the bustling consumer economies of North America and Europe.
Suman knows that Americans want to be socially responsible, while also desiring high quality products. He also knows that the people in his home of Bengal are able to produce high quality products that appeal heavily to western tastes. He seeks to tie East and West together and knows that JootStrap bags will be the key ingredient for doing this.
JootStrap’s mission is to provide consumers with well-designed, high quality bags, while ensuring that all lives involved in the supply chain are touched in a positive way.
How much GOOD can one BAG do?™
This simple slogan is our mantra at JootStrap, driving all of our business decisions. And to maximize the good we do, we have focused our attentions on a specific geographic area: the Bengal region of India and Bangladesh.
So, just how much good can one bag do? As it turns out, a whole lot...
Our bags are made from cotton, a staple component of much of the worlds’ clothing and accessories, as well as a material less known to the West, called jute. Jute, like cotton, is a natural plant fiber and highly versatile, but there are key differences...
The jute plant itself absorbs more carbon dioxide than the average tree, resulting in a negative carbon footprint from the beginning to end of a JootStrap bag’s life-cycle.
The jute fabric manufactured from this plant is elegantly rustic; timeless, yet differentiated.
The JootStrap customer is a stylish individual who gives a damn, not just about the environment, but about those in the world who don’t have access to the amenities that most of us who read this enjoy.
Over 95% of the world’s jute crop production originates from India and Bangladesh, making these countries’ farmers almost exclusively reliant on the crop’s success. Hence, as a consumer of our product, you help the region’s farmers prosper.
From the crop, our bags are assembled by a textile manufacturer in Calcutta, Bengal, which employs former sex workers from the city's red light district. Being employed to make our bags gives these women the opportunity to lead the lives they deserve; lives that are productive, fulfilling, and free of exploitation.
We need your help.
Please consider contributing to this campaign. Funds raised will go toward launching JootStrap’s first line of bags - the 2012-2013 collection. These bags epitomize what JootStrap stands for. We've been working with our manufacturers to get the bags made and designed. A successful product line will lead to increased sales and more books being donated. In return, you will get excellent service from a company that is hoping to change the world, one bag at a time. Please review our list of contribution options and decide what works best for you.

Risks and challenges
After the project is funded, the risk of delivery of the products are limited since we have been working with our manufacturer and have collected some inventory here in the US to deliver to you. We will use the United States Postal Service.
Other risks include:
Our manufacturer may have production or delivery issues with additional bags if there is additional demand. Given the nature of our business, we are closely tied with our manufacturing source and currently do not have additional manufacturers. However, having worked with them over the last year, we estimate this risk to be minimal.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
