About this project
Update 5/28/14-- Stretch Goal for the CAD Source Files!
If we are above $6,000 after the campaign ends and the dust settles I’ll make the original CAD files available to everyone at the “Complete Kit” Level ($19) and above!
I’ll make the files available about a month or so after the last blaster has shipped and then figure out which open source license is appropriate. This way you’ll have time to print one yourself and understand some of the more subtle design reasons. So thanks again and let your friends know so we can smash the goal together!
Update 5/23/14-- New Blaster Print Files for All!!! The "Mini Blaster" modeled after the mini gun used in the movie "Predator" Video
Update 5/19/14-- New, Extra, Free, Barrel Design for All Reward Levels for when you want to go really big!
Rubber Band Blaster-32
Squeeze the trigger briefly and fire once, hold it down and release a torrent of rubber bands like never before seen. Quickly reload by simply replacing the barrel and keep going. Truly, the RBB-32 is the boss of rubber band blasters...
Print one Yourself!
You've had that 3D printer sitting on your desk printing out all kinds of respectable things like gears, enclosures, and other serious parts. However, you've always wondered if there wasn't something more that it could do, something that would really stand out and possibly get you that reprimand at work you've always wanted.
Do it in Style!
Since you're the one printing it, use whatever colors you like! Some printers even make it easy to print one piece in multiple colors. Just have fun with it.
1) Print (.STL) Files Only
We'll send you the .stl files that you can then use with your 3D printer to print out the body of the RBB-32. You'll then need to source the motor, battery case, trigger button, screws, string etc. It shouldn't be too hard, especially if you already have the parts laying around.
2) Print (.STL) Files AND Parts
In addition to sending you the .stl files that you'll use to print the body of the RBB-32 we will send you all of the parts that you'll need to assemble your very own RBB-32! No need to hunt around the internet, buying bits and pieces here and there. We'll send them to you!
3) “Thunder Follows Lightning!”
Some unsolicited advice: If someone punches you in the shoulder and asks you "What follows lightning”, do not reply “Thunder.” Your other shoulder will then start to hurt as well… To commemorate this eternal truth, you can now get two of the "complete kits" (all non-printed parts, motor, battery holder, button, screws, wire, etc.) for $29! That’s one for your left AND right hand! So picture yourself swaggering around dual wielding and ask that older sibling if they know what follows “Lightning”….
4) “CEO” Reward Level Includes all the Printed Parts for a RBB-32 + Second Barrel for quick reloading + the parts in the Complete Kit + .STL Print Files
The people have spoken. This has been the #1 request, all the parts to build your RBB-32 in one box. Announcing the very limited “CEO” kit! This kit includes all of the parts that you need to assemble your RBB-32 and even includes a second barrel for rapid reloading.
You will receive all of the printed parts exactly as they come off of my 3D printer so you will have to spend a little bit of time removing the support structures, but it’s kind of fun. Take a look at the handle in the picture to get an idea. So go big and be your bosses’ boss, be the CEO!
5) “Co-CEOs” Get two sets of printed and non-printed parts to make 2 RBB-32 with two extra barrels for quick reloading! Plus the print files for both Blasters!
6) “Corner Office” Get the printed and non-printed parts to make 1 RBB-32 and 1 MB-32. The MB-32 comes with 2 of the XL “Chairman” barrels!!! I will also print your name on both blasters so you can show it off to your friends. PLUS! You can choose up to 3 colors for your Blasters to be printed in. PLUS! the print files for both Blasters!
Please note that you will have to solder a few wires/joints. Solder not included. Wooden dowel not shown, but is included in the full and CEO kits. We will send you a link with the .stl files and instructions on how to assemble the kit.
International Backers are responsible for any tariffs, taxes, VAT, import duties, etc.
Update 5/19/14-- New Barrel Design for All Reward Levels!
The “Chairman of the Board” Barrel ramps up the original barrel with a much larger capacity (~75 compared to ~30). This new barrel was designed specifically because this campaign and is included with all reward levels for FREE!!! Please note that it has a slightly slower firing rate than the original because the 12 sub-barrels are spaced further apart. (Life is full of trade offs)
After the campaign backers will be able to download its’ print file along with all of the original files. If you’ve ordered the “CEO” kit with the printed barrels you can choose to have one of your 2 barrels be the “Chairman of the Board.” Just let me know after the campaign ends. I would have liked to have offered you to choose both, but it takes about 18 hours to print just that one part. It’s big!
Q. What kind of filament should I use for printing?
A. You can use any filament and any color that you want.
I personally used ABS filament from MakerGeeks. One thing that I really appreciated from them is the incredible selection of colors and materials. I would be really curious to see someone print a RBB-32 using some of their more exotic materials like wood or carbon fiber.
Q. I don’t have a 3D Printer at Home, Office, Maker Space, School, Lab, or Friend’s House. Am I out of luck?
1A. Don’t worry! There’s probably a 3D printer in your neighborhood that will print it for you!
For example, Make XYZ and 3D Hubs links people who need something printed with 3D printers in their neighborhoods. It’s simple and fast! Just decide who you want to print it for you and send them the print files.
3D Hubs and MakeXYZ networks of experienced 3D printers will take care of the rest. It's a great way to try out 3D printing without actually buying and setting up your own printer. 3D Hubs alone has more than 4700 printers in there network ready to turn out RBB-32!
And the best part? You’re supporting and connecting with your local community of makers, builders, and do-it-yourselfers while being a part of the “on demand” manufacturing revolution. Just think, someday while you’re driving your flying car on your way to buy a hoverboard, you’ll explain to your kid that you were there at the very beginning.
So order your reward, print and build your RBB-32, and reflect for a moment how incredibly exciting this moment in history truly is…
Firing in Slow Motion!
Please, I love back story. Please tell me more!
I grew up with a number of friends who all enjoyed tagging each other with rubber bands. At first we would just make a single action rubber band blaster with a clothes line pin, the classic. But as time passed we started adding more and more clothes pins until it was basically a board with a number of clothes pins nailed on it.
Then the first paradigm shift, a rapid fire repeater that could fire six without reloading. Wow! We made small ones and large ones and couldn't imagine anything better, until one day, the Gatling blaster made its presence known and completely dominated. Its withering fire completely changed the landscape and then... that was it. Due to its complexity, only one was ever built. Later, we entered middle school and started doing other stuff, our marathon building sessions and epic battles became a memory.
Fast forward a number of years and one 3D printer. I originally bought my printer for all of the normal responsible things: Printing gears, enclosures, robot legs, etc. However, one day I was reminiscing with a friend about our epic building sessions and how it would have been great to have had a 3D printer. The idea for a small Gatling blaster popped into my head and you now see the results.
I had fun making the RBB-32 and I want people to have as much fun with it as I did. I want to make it affordable and accessible so that's why we want to buy the parts in bulk and offer it as a kit, or as just the files for people who already have parts from different projects. I did a beta test of selling fully assembled RBB-32 and found that the only way I was going to break even was if I went into the rubber band blaster business full time and that's not what I wanted to do. However, there was strong demand for it so I figured why not let people make it themselves?
I'm excited to see what you will do with it! :)
So go ahead, build one for yourself, the world is your oyster.
Production/ Kit Assembly Plan
Two weeks after the campaign ends I will place a bulk order for all of the parts and then kit them out, double check to make sure everything is good, and then send them out to you. Throughout the process I'll send out updates for the different milestones and in general how things are going/ what has arrived. Count on lots of pictures of parts as they come in!
Two weeks after the campaign ends and the money is available I will place a bulk order for all of the parts from the suppliers. I'll be working on getting this ready before the campaign ends so everything will be lined up. At this point I will also Email everyone the print files.
I'm giving myself 4 weeks for all of the parts to arrive and kit up. In the past it has only taken 1-2 week to receive the parts that I've ordered so I'm giving myself about ~2X extra time, so you might be getting your kits early. :)
Once the parts are kitted I will ship the domestic kits first and then the international ones. International shipping always has a bunch of paperwork. You can help me ship your kits to you quickly by making sure I have the correct address. I'm hoping that all of the kits will be shipped out before the end of July.
Small Build Area?
P.S. Please be honest and don't post the .stl files online or pirate them, but you're cool, so we know you won't do that ;-)
Rubber Band Blaster (RBB-32) is not a toy and is for ages 13 or older and only under adult supervision. Be safe!
Risks and challenges
I've already made and printed out about a dozen RBB-32 so I know that the design works well and I know several places to get the parts from so there is very little risk. There is always a chance that some of the parts in the kit might look a little bit different than what is shown. For example, a yellow motor instead of the white one.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The "Complete Kit" has all of the non-printable parts (motor, button, screws, battery holder, etc.). You will need to still print the other parts (handle, barrel etc.).
Don't worry if you don't have a 3D printer yourself; there are two very large networks of 3D printers who will print it for you for a reasonable price. They are located all over the world and there is probably one closer to you than you think. 3D Hubs alone has over 4700 printers in its network! If not for this project, you might find one of them useful for your next one.
****Update**** the "CEO" kit now comes with ALL of the printed and non-printed parts
