With my art practice of weaving photographs I'm creating a cultural map of the Americas with photos of my journey from Canada to Chile.

About this project

With my visual art practice of weaving photographs I am documenting the culture and people of the Western Hemisphere in 2011. I am traveling from Canada to Chile, visiting a least fourteen countries. The journey will be documented with film, photographs and journaling. When I arrive in Chile, I will weave images from the journey together over photo silkscreen prints for a solo exhibition at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Valdivia, Chile in late 2011. The exhibition will have a catalogue reflecting the journey, as a colorful cultural map of the Americas with photos of the trip, journal entries and images of the final exhibition installation.

While traveling I am meeting with Indigenous and cultural artists. From contemporary Aboriginal artists of Canada to Mayan weavers of Guatemala, my time with artists in various communities will lend the opportunity to document art and culture with video and photography. This collected material will empower aboriginal and cultural artists by making inspiring connections, supporting the continuation of traditional art forms, and encouraging creative processes of art as education.

The funds raised will go toward art production, travel expenses, and catalogue publication costs.
