I'm writing a book about the spirituality found in baseball, and I'm hitting all 30 MLB ballparks this year to spark the storytelling.

I believe everything is spiritual, and that we all experience spirituality differently. For me, it's at the ballpark.

Every time I step out of the tunnel and into the grandstand it nearly takes my breath away. The architecture. The perfectly maintained outfield lawn. The fluid, continuous, artful motion of the ball traveling the infield. Retired numbers tell the stories of past legends while new stories are being written with every wind up, with every pitch.

Baseball is my version of Heaven on Earth - maybe it's yours too.

This book idea has been a dream of mine for a long time. I'm doing it for two reasons: because I love baseball and I want to attempt to reach an emerging generation that is seeking God in new ways. I hope to use these stories - those of the past and the present - to tell the story of God.

Storytelling is central to the game of baseball, and it will be central to this project as well. Stories unveil deep truths about God, self, others and the world. A journey to all 30 MLB stadiums is sure to elicit countless tales. My goal is to utilize these stories as a backbone for this book on baseball and spirituality.

I may only be in my late 20s, but I've been around both mainstream Christian culture and baseball culture enough to know which one is more vibrant, hopeful, and spirit-filled. I've been a Christian my whole life. I've been a baseball fan my entire life. There's even an argument that I've been following baseball longer than I've been following Jesus. A good one, in fact.

I'm very aware of the statistics of my generation leaving the church and experiencing spirituality elsewhere. The emerging generation - my generation - has little interest in institutionalized religion. We're tired of being told what to believe and how to behave before we're allowed to belong to a community. We're tired of searching for God in stagnant old church buildings.

The traditional church model is not jiving with my generation. Mainstream denominations have accepted the understanding that this world is in decay because their congregations are in decay. I believe the opposite: the Christian church has an opportunity to partner with my generation's quest for spirituality. What if the church embraced worship outside their church building? What if Christians began exploring spirituality differently? What if the ballpark became not just a place for entertainment, but a space for connecting with the fullness of God's Life?

My Itinerary*...

This is my initial itinerary. It might change throughout the year, but it's somewhere to start. Take a look and see if there are any dates where I'll be rolling through your city. I'd love to catch a game with you, or have a place to stay if you'll have me.

* - Some of these dates may change as the season progresses.

I look at this list of games and see way more than just a list of baseball games. I see stories unfolding for each one: Red Sox at Yankees: Sacred History. Cubs at Red Sox: Blessings/Curses. Giants at Dodgers: Loyalty/Betrayal. Nationals (read: Expos) at A's: Injustice/Fairness.

Just a few examples.

Anyway. I don't want to write the whole book here. Thanks for helping me achieve this dream. I'm excited to begin this journey with all of you.

Publisher Information...

This book is being published through The House Studio, out of Kansas City, Missouri, and has a tentative release set for September 2015.

Risks and challenges

There's a possibility that my itinerary doesn't work out perfectly. I may fail to make it to all 30 ballparks, or I may run out of money and have to quit halfway through. Regardless, the book will get done. Otherwise, the only risk is my ability as a writer.
