About this project
About the Shop:
Gaslamp Social Games Cafe is a board game store that comes equipped with a coffee shop. We want to be a place where you unwind, unplug, and spend some quality time face-to-face with friends new and old. We'll have a library of open games that you can come in and play for free anytime, as well as events and tournaments where you can meet like-minded nerds and explore the wide world of board and tabletop games.
We plan to focus primarily on new and first-time players. We want everyone to be able to come in, pick up a new game or join a gaming group, and learn how to play in a comfortable and friendly environment. No one should ever feel left out or too embarrassed to play. Our goal is to bring communities together through unplugged, face-to-face interaction.
In addition to our great selection of games (including, we hope, games you'll find us backing here on Kickstarter), we want to provide a small selection of high-quality coffee, tea, and snacks to enjoy while you play. Our goal on the coffee side is to support small business while offering unique products you won't be able to find anywhere else. Check out our links below to find out more about the suppliers we'd like to use. (Also - there's been talk of vegan cupcakes! Stay tuned!)
A Little About Our Rewards:
Since we are planning a brick-and-mortar shop, we had difficulty finding reward options that wouldn't totally exclude our non-local backers - including a ton of friends and nearly all our family. All the cool swag we have listed in our rewards will be available for sale in the store, and there will be absolutely no expiration date on any of the rewards that require you to be there in person. If you're dying to try some of our coffee but just can't make it out there, shoot us an email and we'll work something out.
We are a married couple who have fallen madly in love with all things game-related. Our board game collection has overrun its closet and threatens to swallow the bedroom. We run three weekly games of Dungeons & Dragons between the two of us, and are already writing story lines for several more once we move. We've been known to spend hours alphabetizing our Magic cards. We own more dice than socks.
We each have several years' experience in the coffee world, both serving as coffee-slingers for a number of local shops including La Dolce Vita, the CSU Coffee Cart, Jilly Bean Java, Gib's NY Bagels, and most recently at Truman's Coffeehouse - where poor Truman has to hear "well, when I run MY shop..." on a nearly daily basis. Thanks, Truman - we love you. ;)
In addition to our coffee and gaming habits, we have also built our own company from the ground up before. In 2007 we started Muddy Water Blues, a dance and event-planning company that held weekly dances and threw workshops every few months or so for the swing and blues dance community in Fort Collins. Although we have had to say goodbye to the dancing world, the company we built still runs today under the name Indigo Blues, and their dance nights regularly attract 100 or more participants.
Thank you for taking the time to check out our project, and let's play soon. :)
Jackie's Java Awesomely delicious coffee and espresso, hand-roasted by this really cool girl we met.
Happy Lucky's Tea House Loose leaf teas from around the world, plus a staff that will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about making a good cup of tea.
The Haunted Game Cafe Our inspiration for this business. Gary, you're way too good to us.
We are still in the process of looking at commercial retail spaces, but we are aiming for a 2000-sq-foot or so space somewhere in the Redmond/ Kirkland/ Bellevue area. Currently leading the pack is a nice little shop facing the courtyard in Redmond Square... but if you're in the area and happen to see a vacant spot that you think would suit, we'd love to hear about it!
Well - as you probably know, backers don't pay any money if a project fails to reach its goal in the allotted time. So the good news is, you won't have to spend any money, even if you have already pledged.
However, this also means that we won't be able to send out our rewards - that only happens if we're fully funded. So that's a bummer.
Honestly, though - we want this to happen. We are excited about the rewards we're offering, and we know you guys are excited about getting them. If we fail to hit our goal by April 7th, you can expect us to turn around and post a new, improved project within the month. Like they say, try and try again. We're not giving up on this dream of ours - and we hope you won't, either.
