Heliostouch is a robot application that arised from my personal experience in renewable energies. 

Solar energy is a very labor demanding industry, and unfortunately, is lacking the right tools to make the large demand match the installation pace. For that reason I encouraged myself to build a robot arm that could help workers install panels easily, so solar energy would count with a powerful ally.

This robot would have to be made with the latest materials and yet be compatible with of the shelf components. This seems like a challenge, but by combining, 3D printing, composites, dry adhesives and strong linear actuators I've reached a design that can become an ideal tool. At this point the design is only a cad model based on over a year of material testing and component sourcing, but with youre help it could become a reality.

Its payload, long reach and low energy consumption will make automation of solar panel installation an affordable tool for all companies.

To make all these features possible I need to begin building, test the existing design and increase the patent rights to Europe. Below you can see a short budget for the materials and services that I believe are necessary for this project.

 PROFITABILITY

In order to determine the possible profit of using HeliosTouch Renovalia helped determine that the installation cost of a solar panel in terms of labour is 1 euro. At the beginning the robots would be operated by Heliostouch as an installation company and they are expected to have a 5000 euro unitary cost.
The robots could be used in one of the following scenarios:
  • One worker along with a Heliostouch unit installs solar panels at the same pace it would with a human companion.
  • Two workers install solar panels with the help of a Heliostouch unit.
In the following graph you can see the savings derived of each scenario plotted against the installed power. The horizontal lines represent the cost of the robot arms.

Under the circumsntances described above payback of the investment would happen after 3.33MW with one robot, and 13.3MW if two robots are used.

Current solar installations exceed that power greatly even in european countries with low sun irradiation, meaning that the robots could be paid back after a single project.

Additional cost savings could be derived from the reduction in the construction period, which reduces the risk of changes in the energy legislation or pricing of the equipment, and the reduction of hazards of the work environment. 

Risks and challenges

A robot arm that combines the most modern materials and manufacturing techniques requires a lot of work and testing.

In depth studies of the dry adhesive have already taken place and test at field conditions have shown that it they are viable materials.

Aside of being an engineer with a great adaptability and knowledge of new materials I count with the support of two amazing companies. One specialized in renewable energies and the other in manufacturing of metals.
