About

ABOUT THE FILM

Pater is a story about humanity. It follows two extraterrestrial beings, the Progenitor, who is wise and stoic, yet rapidly aging, and Janus, who is toeing the line between childhood and adulthood, on their journey to find an advanced civilization that has not yet engineered its own demise. Planet after planet, and disappointment after disappointment, the pair fall into despair as they realize their chances of success are becoming less and less feasible.

When they lock onto a signal coming from a mysterious tan planet, their hopes for survival are revived. However, upon landing on the planet and exploring the remains of its civilization, they discover that they are once again too late. Going back into their ship, and pondering whether to continue on their mission or not, they come across one last distress signal from a planet light years away ...

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

Carl Sagan has always been an inspiration to me. As a kid, I watched VHS copies of the original Star Wars trilogy more times than I can count. The idea that we put a man on the moon stirs the child in me that believes anything is possible.

When people ask, "So what's Pater all about?" I usually respond along the lines of, "It's like Cormac McCarthy's The Road only in outer space." I like that answer because it's convenient; however, Pater is much more than that. Pater takes an old story and raises the stakes. It asks about the universe, and our place in it. It illustrates humanity in a place far from it. The film explores what it means to be a father, and will additionally sing notes of loneliness, of a search for a home, and of the end of war.

Mikey Pounds (Co-Producer / VFX Supervisor) gave me the concept for Pater, and it has really blossomed into a story that I not only want to tell, but that I feel needs to be told. My hopes for the film could not be higher.

WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP

We need your support in order to make this film! Here's a rough budget of what we need your money for:

General Production Expenses - $200
Catering / Craft Services - $1500
Art Department - $3000
Equipment - $1500
Post-Production / SFX - $500
Festival Submission / Distribution - $1000

Any support helps! Please donate what you can, and spread the word to all of your family, friends, acquaintances, business colleagues, and random people you meet on the street - we need everyone's help to make this great film a reality!

OUR CREW

AMANDA PRENTISS, PRODUCER

Amanda Prentiss is a film & television producer based out of Denver, CO, where her production company, Prentiss Productions, Ltd., is also headquartered. She moved here from Oregon in order to pursue her filmmaking aspirations. This is her fourteenth short film as a producer, and her first foray into the sci-fi genre. She is excited to work on Pater because of its compelling storyline, and the captivating humanistic message the film holds. Her most recent film, "WORDS", is currently on the festival circuit, and was featured at the Colorado Independent Women of Film Festival.

MIKEY POUNDS, CO-PRODUCER & VFX SUPERVISOR

Mikey Pounds is an award winning filmmaker from Boulder, Colorado. He recently returned to filmmaking after taking a break to focus on other passions. During his 11 year hiatus from film production he pursued a career in graphic design and jewelry production after studying at Red Rocks Community College and apprenticing several predominate jewelers in the Boulder/Denver area. His main interests in film production are cinematography, editing, and visual effects, which he does through his company Lucky 4 Entertainment. He is also known for his art direction and puppet fabrication for his film "Ekk's Night Out" which earned him nominations for Best Art Direction, and Best Sound Design, and won Best Production 1 at the Fall 2011 Colorado Film School Student Gala.

JOHN HOSACK, WRITER & DIRECTOR

John Hosack is an all-around shady character. He regularly enjoys watching films that terrorize the status quo, and even worse, he seems dedicated to making you do the same. Did I mention that he thinks bow ties are cool? Filmmaking is an art, but John is no artist, merely a visual criminal, a burgeoning copycat with the mindset of a lawyer. Pasolini, Lynch, Godard, Kubrick, and Polanski are among his favorite people to rip off. His last film, a sci-fi-thriller short titled, "Cracks" finished post production in June and is in the festival submission process.

ERIC C. WOOD, ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

Eric Wood has worked professionally in entertainment for over 25 years. He caught the film‐bug as a student, and knew that filmmaking was in his blood. He lived and worked in Europe for 10 years, where he was mentored by award winning production managers and producers.  Upon returning to the States, he began developing and managing projects for independent markets.   Eric’s credits include: Major League , Shining Through  (Michael Douglas), The Innocent  (John Schlesinger), The Neverending Story III , Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,  & Schindler’s List  (both Steven Spielberg).  He brings to the table a clear command of story theory, structure, character, and dialog. Most importantly, Eric contributes a practical knowledge of the production process from development to market. He is partnered with Director/Producer Kathleen “Bo” Bobak at Toolbox Film, a company that both develops and produces independent film projects. He is also a principal of Low Room Cinema, a company formed to mentor young filmmakers.

ROBERT HARDY, DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY

Robert Hardy is a cinematographer, writer, and musician who lives and works in Denver, Colorado. Since becoming hopelessly enamored with the craft of filmmaking at the University of Denver several years ago, Robert has shot numerous short films and worked on countless others in a variety of positions. He spends most of his time thinking about the psychology of light and the nature of art and  aesthetics (which is a little weird). Robert is committed to telling meaningful stories with compelling characters, so he was invariably drawn to Pater, and he was beyond stoked when he was hired to shoot it. He also writes about all things filmmaking for nofilmschool, one of the leading independent filmmaking sites on the web. You can read his articles here: http://nofilmschool.com/author/rhardy/.

MATTHEW J. PLUMB, PRODUCTION DESIGNER

Matthew Plumb has worked on a number of feature and short films, in addition to commercials, in a variety of roles. His love for cinema began at a young age, and he continued that passion by attending the Colorado Film School. He then started his production company, Londen Pictures, in order to pursue his dream on the professional level. He was drawn to working on Pater due to the combination of working with talented friends and colleagues, as well as the excitement of a film that provides him, as a Production Designer, with the opportunity to create an entirely new world and set of inhabitants.

GARRETT SHREFFLER, ART DIRECTOR

Garrett Shreffler considers himself a student of all things film. Although his primary interest lies in directing, in order to be a well-rounded filmmaker, he also pursues opportunities in other areas of film production. Garrett has worked on a multiple films, the most notable of which would be the feature film Roadside. Garrett is excited about working on Pater because it is an art heavy film that will allow him add put his own creative touch as an Art Director.

MICHAEL COOKE, GAFFER

Michael Cooke is a native Coloradan who takes great pride in the rising local film market. His filmmaking interests lay in cinematography and lighting/electric. Mike would like to work in extreme sport documentaries that feature skiing, downhill mountain biking, rock climbing, and rafting. His greatest wish he has for Pater is for the film to look as natural and organic as possible (and that there would be enough interest to make a feature out of it.) Mike's one piece of advise he would like to share is keep exploring. There are moments that have never been lived out and the tricky part is capturing them with the right framing. Cheers!

GREGORY CHANCE BULLINGER, SOUND MIXER

Gregory Chance Bullinger has worked on several short films in various capacities. He first began making his own films in high school and was featured heavily in the Casper College Student Film Festival in 2011 as a writer, director, actor, and editor. He has since moved to Denver where he has collaborated on a number of films as a sound mixer and editor. Pater provides him with the opportunity to work on another exciting project with an extremely talented group of people.

Risks and challenges

One of the biggest challenges with this film lies in the art department - we need to create an entire world that looks and feels authentic to our audience. That type of endeavor requires money. We have incredibly talented and dedicated people working in our crew, however, If we don't get the money we need, we will not be able to make this film in the manner it demands.

Another challenge (one not particularly unique to us) is distribution. We are putting in massive amounts of time and energy into this film, and we would love for it to be able to reach a wide audience. That is why part of the funding we are seeking is in order to submit this film to festivals. Not only is this a film we want to show the world, but also a film we think the world needs to see.
