This project is about shifting your community's perspective.
The Puzling Adventure books spread Inclusion and Acceptance of children with special needs.
When all children are included, children with special needs participate with and explore their environment alongside their peers. When all children are accepted, children with special needs and their families participate in their communities without judgement, stereotyping, or alienation.
You have the chance to make the next generation more inclusive and accepting of all people. This is an opportunity to connect with and support children with different or special needs.
First Goal Reached! Onward & Upward:
Now is the chance to continue expanding the children's book series from four books to six books. With the stretch goal, I will illustrate the next two books in the series: The Puzlings and the Case of the Wiggles and The Puzlings and the Case of the Musical Concert. Any money generated after reaching the stretch goal of $13,945.75 will go towards creating, illustrating, printing, and distributing the next books in the series. I think we can raise enough to put ten books into this children's series!
I would love to hear comments and ideas for future books. Please send me a message or post a comment. This is your project and you can be a part of creating the next books.
You spread inclusion. You made a difference.
Now we can make this bigger.
What Is This Project?
The Puzling Adventures is a book series that highlights the challenges that children with special needs encounter in their school, home, and community environments. The goal of these books is to spread inclusion and awareness of children with different or special needs throughout every community. This project is a way to help all children in the next neurodiverse generation feel accepted and included for who they are.
The biggest goal of this project is to print and distribute The Puzling Adventure books to as many children across the US as possible as well as to create additional books for a continuation of this series. There is no limit to the number of books in The Puzling Adventures series!
There are currently four books that are ready to print: The Puzlings and the Case Of The Green Teeth, The Puzlings and the Case Of The No-Looks, The Puzlings and the Case Of The What-Ifs, and When Someone Is Different. Each book is centered around the main character facing and overcoming a challenge that is common to children with special needs. Respectively, the challenges highlighted in these book are: having difficulty with teeth brushing or visiting the dentist, making eye contact, experiencing anxiety, and feeling different.

Why Do Children Like These Books?
Children relate to The Puzling Adventure series because it incorporates the most captivating aspects of children's books - colorful illustrations, fun characters, and relatable storylines. The characters face real-life challenges that are relatable, and they use real-life strategies to overcome these challenges. Both neurotypical and neurodiverse children enjoy hearing these stories and looking at the pictures.

The Characters In These Books
The books feature imaginary characters called Puzlings. What is a Puzling? Good question! A Puzling is a creature who lives in a world similar to the world in which people live. Each book features a Puzling who has a special need. While this Puzling overcomes a challenge, his community learns to accept and include him.

Why These Books Make A Difference
The books deliver a powerful message about overcoming adversity while also being fun to read. The storylines normalize atypical behaviors so that children learn how to accept and include others of all abilities as well as advocate for themselves. This series provides a way for parents to teach their children about inclusion and acceptance, which is an extremely important human value.
Educating the next generation about the issues relevant to children with different or special needs is important to cultivate a society that genuinely understands, accepts, and includes children who are not neurotypical. In order to educate children, atypical behaviors and challenges that these children face need to be talked about and understood. These books help to explain these behaviors and challenges, which ultimately opens up and generates friendships between children.
Who Benefits From These Books
These books are designed with children who have different or special needs in mind. However, any child who struggles with a challenge that prevents him or her from feeling successful will benefit from these books. The challenges addressed in each story are relevant to every child, regardless of his or her ability. All children confront these challenges or similar challenges during their childhood. Further, as a parent of neurotypical children, this is a great opportunity to teach your children about children of different abilities and the importance of accepting and including others. These books are suitable for ages three to thirteen and are most effective when they are read out loud to the children. Parents and adults also enjoy reading them!

The Future Of These Books
Goals For The Puzling Adventures Book Series:
- Print and distribute at least ten books in this Puzling series
- Create simpler versions of these books for children to read independently
- Initiate a societal movement of inclusion in communities
One of the big goals of this project is to create additional books that address all of the issues and challenges that this population encounters on a daily level. There are many challenges that could serve as the focus of the next Puzling story. Parents have brought to my attention the following challenges as relevant topics for the future books of the Puzling series: paying attention, wearing clothing, participating in gym class, falling asleep, being a picky eater, and tolerating loud noises. I hope to address as many of these challenges as possible and more as this book series grows.
How Will My Support Help?
Most importantly, your support will help spread awareness, inclusion, and acceptance of all children through the power of stories and pictures.
- The printing and distribution of 1,000 copies of The Puzling Adventure books to children and their families, as well as to schools, teachers, therapists, and professionals around the US who consistently work with both neurotypical and neurodiverse children.
- Future production and distribution of The Puzling Adventure books that address current and future issues and difficulties that children with special needs encounter.
- Stretch Goal: Production of the next two books in the book series (the 5th and 6th books), The Case of the Concert Rules and The Case of the Wiggles.

What If I Do Not Have Any Connections To A Child With Special Needs?
That is OK! You can gift a book to a teacher, therapist, dentist, or a school. You don't know of anyone like this? That is OK too!
If you would like to give one of these books to a child, you have the reward option to "sponsor a child with special needs" or "sponsor a child and family." The book will be given to Imagine!, a program local to the author that serves children with special needs in the Boulder County, Colorado area.
Other options for rewards include "sponsoring" a parent, therapist, teacher, elementary school, preschool, or local program. If you are not connected to any of these individuals, schools, or programs, but you would like to help to spread inclusion in the next generation, you can choose a sticker or postcard/poster reward to show that you support an inclusive community.
If you are a business and would like to show that you are inclusive, you can choose the business reward that provides you with the paraphernalia to do this. You can also donate the book you receive with this reward, When Someone Is Different, to Imagine!

Risks and challenges
There are very few risks associated with this project.
Four books in this series have been illustrated and designed, and they are ready for print. The entire printing and shipping process should take approximately 3-4 weeks.
The next two books in this series have been written, but not illustrated. To complete this part of the project, the books need to be illustrated, designed, and printed. The obvious challenge with this is that there could be unpredicted delays when completing the illustrations, design, printing, and shipping. However, this risk is fairly low because the illustrator and graphic designer are already committed to completing these two books immediately after the Kickstarter ends. I am confident that the next two books in the series will be completed.
A minor challenge will be to continue providing current advice with regard to solutions and therapy practices outlined and alluded to in the series. With the current four-book series, all advice reflects current pediatric occupational therapy practices. As the therapy practice changes and future books are written, I will continue to include the most relevant and current advice and solutions as it relates to occupational therapy practices.
The biggest risk for this project is that an inadequate amount of funds are raised, which means that the message of inclusion will not be spread ubiquitously around the US. Further, children and families who would benefit from this six-book series would not have access to them.
The smallest risk for this project is that it is over funded, which might delay the initial shipment of rewards. However, the timeline for the rewards was created with additional time to compensate for any delays in production.
SPREAD INCLUSION AND AWARENESS OF CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS. MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE NEXT GENERATION WITH THE PUZLING ADVENTURE BOOKS.
