About

Standard Products is a web-based platform where users create their own products from a collection of digital designs by selecting the dimensions and materials that will define the finished product.

Each Standard Product combines 3D-printed components with standard materials – such as wooden planks and beams available in local hardware stores. 

With a digital, web-based interface, users can adjust the physical dimensions of the product, select the materials that will be used to build it, and generate the needed 3D-printable components.

Over the past year, we have developed a first collection of objects: a stool, cupboard, and lamp, each constructed through this process. Alongside these objects, we have developed an accessible online interface for adjusting and modifying the objects. A successful campaign will allow us to dedicate resources to evolve this project into a publicly available platform that gives users a true opportunity to customize and create their own products. 

As rewards for supporting Standard Products, we are making available an initial round of production for Stool One and Standard Cupboard. These Products will be made available in several formats:

  • A digital download of the files for 3D-printing, list of standard materials, and assembly instructions.
  • A set of 3D-printed components produced with ultra-strong Nexeo Novamid®ID material – to be assembled with your own, locally purchased wooden planks and beams.
  • A complete and assembled piece of furniture, produced in our studio here in the Netherlands. 

Over the last months, Stool One has evolved along with our working process, into a very strong and functional piece of furniture.  

The final version of Stool One is reduced to 8 3D-printed parts which can be easily assembled into a complete and functional piece of furniture.

To keep the production of Standard Products as accessible as possible, it was important for us that all parts could be reproduced on standard home-scale 3D-printers. At the same time, the objects needed to be strong enough for serious daily use.

Early versions of the stool were revised and updated to have fewer 3D-printed parts, less additional hardware, and more rigid construction.

By working in close collaboration with the department of engineering plastic of DSM we were able to refine the material use and part-design to produce printed components that are strong enough to create fully-functional and sturdy furniture. 

The Standard Cupboard was designed with a goal of minimizing the size of the 3D-printed components, while still creating a sturdy and functional small storage unit.

The Standard Cupboard version availble as part of this campaign includes doors and a single adjustable shelf.

Like all Standard Products, the Cupboard is designed to be adjusted. The same parts and construction used in the initial version we are offering now can adapt to create a variety of objects. The dimensions can be changed, doors can be added or removed, and the number of selves can be adjusted: extending the Cupboard to a full-sized bookshelf, or reducing it to a small shoe-rack.

It is this level of adjustability and customization, combined with a flexible and locally accessible production techniques, which truly define Standard Products. 

The rise of digital fabrication tools has sparked the potential for alternative models of production. Through previous projects such as Keyshapes and Hacking Households, designers Jesse Howard and Jesse Kirschner have collaborated, explored, and speculated about the systems that could lead to a new type of digitally defined products. 

Through these collaborations, we have realized that the potentials of these explorations requires not only new types of objects, but also new ways to engage with and define the objects around us. This led us to create a new working method which blends code and everyday products. To make this a reality, we worked in partnership with material engineers at DSM, and other 3D-Printing experts and software developers at Openplus.

By extending this working method through involving more designers, and making more objects available, we believe the Standard Products platform can provide a new example in how we influence and produce the things we are surrounded with everyday. 

Risks and challenges

The initial challenge in developing Standard Products will be to extend our current online interface into a working, publicly accessible platform. With the support of Openplus, we have the possibility to include additional software developers in the project to realize this transition.

The nature of the Standard Products is based on individual production. However, we realize that a successful campaign could require a large-batch of producing 3D printed parts. Through the network DSM we have identified additional production partners with the expertise and infrastructure for creating high-quality 3D-printed parts.

With the support of Openplus and additional financial support of chemical manufacturer DSM, whose research into materials for 3D-printing has helped to develop stronger components, printable on home-scale FDM printers, the project has the perfect group of people to make this project a success.
