About this project
Connect your doorbell to your smartphone
smartbell is the first doorbell built for the 21st century, combining modern technology with the demand of home owners to see and hear what happens at the front door, even when nobody is at home. It allows for more comfort and control when visitors come by.
smartbell does not need any technical skills for installation. Literally everyone can install it without paying additional costs for a service to do it. smartbell is easy to operate, operation of the product is mostly self-explanatory. There is no competitor on the market, who offers comparable features in terms of convenience, security, control and ease of installation.
How does it work?
A visitor rings the bell at your front door. The smartbell connects through your Wi-Fi-router over the internet to your smartphone. You get an instant notification that a visitor is at your home and you can decide whether or not to take the call.
Once you accept the call, a video chat is established between the smartbell and your smartphone. You can start talking to the visitor without letting him or her know where you are.
- iPhone 3GS, 4, 4S, 5, 5s/c running iOS 5.0 and up or any iPod Touch with iOS 5.0
- Android devices running OS 2.3 and up
- All majority Wi-Fi Router
- Power Supply of your current door bell (DC 5V to 36V)
Customize your smartbell
You can change the display to your liking. We've already designed a lot of ready-to-use designs, with more coming every day.
Choose your favorite design or create your own by using smartbell's iOS or Android app.
You can also define custom messages for your visitors like when you have a party and your door is open, when you are out to get milk for a view minutes or when you need to give the mail man delivery instructions.
Free app for iOS and Android
With every smartbell you get the free app to set up and control your smartbell. Just load it to your device and you are good to go.
smartbell can be connected to different Z-WAVE compatible devices, such as your garage door. This gives you the power to control your Z-WAVE devices with your smartphone. So when someone is visiting, you can chose whether or not to let him or her in.
Z-Wave is a near field communication standard for home automation. A lot of devices are available, but with smartbell we use it mainly to open the door or garage remotely. Further usage is possible, though.

Why did we create smartbell?
We always had the problem of missing visitors when we were not at home. We researched the market for a product to solve that problem, but we could not find anything that worked to our satisfaction. We wanted to be able to speak directly to the people while they were at the door.
After a lot of brainstorming, we came up with the first smartbell-like device. The first version had just a ringer with a microphone and a speaker, acting much like an intercom. While building that, we thought “Why not make it smarter by adding a touchscreen and a camera to it, so that we can actually see and talk to the visitors?".
From there on it was in our minds “We live in a modern world and we should answer our doors in a modern way!“ This includes for the visitors to be able to call a certain person in the household by choosing a name directly on the touchscreen. So when you just want to talk to the mom of the house, there is no need to alarm everyone, as for instance the sleeping little kids.
Our goal is to bring the smartbell to you as an early adopter. We need your feedback to make the product even better and to adopt it to your daily life and your environment.
To make this product real and affordable for you, we need to mass produce it. So we have to order a lot of devices to get the production price down. When we reach our Kickstarter goal, we can order at least 3,500 devices.
Where we're at
We’ve been working on the application for many months. We have built an amazing prototype and we're almost there.
With your support, we can bring smartbell to the market - worldwide. While we're close to entering production, your contribution will help fund:
- Production tooling
- Large component order
- Global Wi-fi and Z-Wave Certification

In no special order: Meik and Agneta Lindberg, Celine, Melina and Leonardo as the Lindberg Family, Amy and Doug Highsmith, Greg Hupe, Steve Clark, Rick Valantine, Jaycee Clark, Andrew Schauwecker, Diana and Bob Butler, Johanna Granados, Stephanie Stout, Ryan Amaradio and Tracey Claxton as best supporting actors, Chris Mckechnie, director at digitalcinemaguy.com and his assistants Ryan Amaradio, Steve Clark and Rick Valantine for finishing the details. Thank you very much!
Risks and challenges
We have built functional prototypes already and are confident we will be able to produce an amazing product. However, with all hardware projects, there is always a risk when it comes to getting a prototype production-ready. We use off-the-shelf parts where possible; all of which already have CE marking which mitigates the risk in safety.
We appreciate your support and we are excited to have you join us in our journey to share the smartbell with the world!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Use your Cellphone at the current doorbell location and check the signal power from your wi-fi at home at his place.
Sure, whereever you have an internet connection and a Wi-fi network, smartbell works fine.
Yes, you should connect it to a 5V to 36V DC voltage. This is standard to almost every door bell used. If you do not have a power supply at your door, we will recommend you some sufficient power supplies later in the process.
You are virtually unlimited; connect as many smartbells as you want. We have tested it with up to 25 smartbells connected to one Smartphone.
Yes. At the time of product delivery, the Android version will be available.
The camera can be rotated in a very wide range, up to 180 degrees. You should always find a good position for the smartbell, so that you can perfectly see your visitors.
Yes, shipping to US is included in the price. Add $19 for all other countries. Take in account that import tax might apply in your country.
