About this project
AS SEEN ON:
Hi, I'm Nick, owner of Science Coffee. I'm a Silicon Valley mechanical engineer turned home barista turned professional barista.
For over the past decade I've been professionally designing everything from robotics to minimally invasive medical devices. Along the way I've learned an incredible amount about design, manufacturing, and materials science, and Science Coffee aims to fuse my passions of engineering and coffee to bring new and innovative tools to the specialty coffee world.
This Kickstarter campaign is to fund production of the Portakey; an extremely useful everyday carry tool for professional baristas, home baristas, espresso machine technicians, and people who just love coffee.
Well, what does it do? As a barista, we are often responsible for espresso machine maintenance, and this tool makes it a snap!
How many times have you burned your hands using a traditional screwdriver to remove the shower screen on your espresso machine after a shift? Nobody likes near boiling water dripping down onto them. The Portakey has 2 built in flathead screwdrivers that let you remove the shower screen with your hands completely out of the way of dripping water from the group head. These flathead screwdrivers are also super useful for adjusting the portafilter holders on most grinders!
When's the last time you cleaned your steam wand? The Portakey has a built in wrench to remove your espresso machines steam wand tip. Over time, milk funk can creep into the threads between the wand and tip due to back pressure. You don't want to serve that to someone! A happy machine makes for happy customers.
Did you just work a 10 hour shift? You deserve a beverage. That's why the Portakey has a built in bottle opener. Plenty of leverage to make opening the bottle of your choice a breeze.
The Portakey also slides right onto your belt loop. It's big enough to give you the leverage you need, but small enough to fit in your back pocket with your keys!
Aside from being an awesome multi-tool, the Portakey is beautifully designed. Even if you never needed to clean an espresso machine, it will still look great as a keychain/everyday carry tool hanging off of your belt loop. The portafilter design is extremely unique and recognizable.
The production version of this tool will be carved out of a solid block of high grade stainless steel, then heat treated for hardness/toughness, and finished just like the prototype shown. It's not a cheap keychain. The same manufacturing processes will be used as high end knife makers. It has been designed to last multiple lifetimes. If funded, the Portakey has been slated to be manufactured entirely in the USA.
If you're interested in the Portakey, you probably love coffee as much as I do. To entice funding, I'm partnering with a new local roaster, Worth Coffee, to bring you delicious whole bean roasted coffee as part of your order. A limited number of small batch 12oz bags will be available, and I assure you that you won't be disappointed!
For those who want to go the extra mile, I've set up a three part coffee package featuring a Portakey, a Science Coffee Modern Pour Over Stand (shown above), and a 12oz bag of whole bean coffee from Worth Coffee. You'll be brewing in style in no time.
Thank you so much for looking. I hope that others will be as excited as I am about this awesome little tool. I can't wait to get them manufactured if you help me successfully bring them to market!
STRETCH GOAL ADDED
The amazing folks at Department of Brewology have designed a custom limited edition item JUST FOR THIS KICKSTARTER! If we can push above $4000, every contributor that pledges $38 or more will receive a FREE Science Coffee pennant with their order!
Risks and challenges
I've done everything possible to mitigate risk. With over a decade of experience in manufacturing and supply chain management, I am ready to bring the Portakey to production. Over a dozen quotes were obtained for its manufacture. If funded, it will be produced inside the USA by a veteran owned machine shop, and I will do everything in my power to maintain and drive the appropriate shipping schedule.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
