WHO WE ARE

Columbus Moving Company is the premiere modern dance company in Columbus, Ohio.  In residence at the Garden Theater, it is our mission to infuse Columbus art with our own unique blend of modern dance theater -- developing new work from directed improvisation combined with compelling choreography, through innovative collaborations with other local arts companies.

In the local, indie spirit of the Short North Arts District. Columbus Moving Company unites long time friends and performance artists who have decades of combined dance experience and dedication to the craft, as a fresh new voice to the dance scene in our community.

Past collaborations with The Pizzuti Collection, MaD Arts Group, musician Counterfeit Madison, and, in our most recent production PLAYS, with local playwrights, allow us to expand our creative reach beyond just our areas of expertise and into realms of unimagined artistry.

We delight in playful and athletic modern dance.  We call ourselves Columbus MOVING Company because of our eclectic creative process and use of movement improv to "invent" our work.

We are all at once creators, contributors, and collaborators, and the passion that we immerse in our work invites our audiences to connect to the humanity and familiarity that our dancing evokes.  On a wide spectrum of formats, our work ranges from experimental and absurd to more expressive and narrative, always with particular attention to memorable music or spoken word.

We seek to MOVE our audiences with our work -- emotionally and viscerally -- and to make dance a more accessible form of art in our city.  The Columbus Dispatch describes us as "Theatrical, fun, witty and moving", a "swooping, swirling, slithering celebration of motion".

WHAT'S NEXT

Moving into our 2nd full artistic season as resident artists with Short North Stage, the regional theater company based at the Garden Theater, we want to take on bigger and more exciting ventures that will captivate audiences and showcase the breadth of talent that Central Ohio has to share.

CMCo: PUPPETS - March 27th & 28th, 2015
Teaming up with The Zoot Theatre Company, the Dayton-based puppet theater group, we will produce an immersive evening of puppet dance.  Pairing the steam-punk inspired artistic direction of Tristan Cupp's hand-crafted puppets with the wickedly witty antics of our energetic dance creations, PUPPETS will be an exciting theater experience for all ages.

As many of Cupp's puppets can be worn by the actor, it is very exciting to consider the possibilities of this dance collaboration! Also, in true Zoot style, there will be live storytelling elements injected into the work, such as projections of scenery being hand drawn in real-time with the performers on stage, which will frame the delicate intricacies both of the puppetry and the dance, allowing the audience to discover the unexpected connections between these two, very different mediums.

CMCo: GLASS - June 26th & 27th, 2015
Our follow-up to PUPPETS is a collaboration with Kevin Estes, local composer, musician, and Artistic Director of MaD Arts Group.  Estes's original musical composition set to instruments composed of glass will be the foundation of this new work, which is inspired by the short story, The Glass Princess by Justin Richards, a screenwriter for the BBC series, Dr. Who.  The story is of Clio, a poisoned princess who lives her life asleep behind glass, only awakening once per year on her birthday  to celebrate with the doctors who monitor and care for her.

Through the marriage of this unique glass ballet and CMCo's dramatically staged dancing, Estes describes his aim is to "combine basic human elements of joy and happiness with sorrow and resolve to capture an underlying darkness that is surrounded by the hope and persistence of the human spirit". Monumental glass instrumentation will set the stage, framing the dancers and musicians as we team up to present this touching and dynamic tale of the fragility of life and the will to do more than simply survive.

Risks and challenges

The biggest challenge we face, and where you come into play, is funding the project in order to back all of the artists and resources that go into producing high caliber artistic endeavors like these ones!

Our dedication to this creative process will be the constant in the artistic equation -- financial support is our major variable. And while everyone involved with our undertakings has worked for little to no compensation during our many years in the game, it is now time to push our operations to the level of professionalism that all of our company members and collaborators are working from, and to be able to financially support every aspect of our productions.

Columbus Moving Company is committed to bringing sophisticated, quality performances to build cultural relevance and a comprehensive view of contemporary art to our community. With your donation, we will be able to sufficiently promote the self-produced works and compensate the team of dancers, choreographers, puppeteers, musicians, & technicians who make this all possible.

Thank you for your assistance to champion not only Columbus Moving Company but also our collaborators in the greater arts community. Your contribution directly implements our mission to support local professional artists and allows us to deliver exceptional and groundbreaking modern dance theater to new audiences for artistic seasons to come.
