Professor James Lovelock has saved the world once already, having singlehandedly identified the CFCs that were carving the lethal hole in the Ozone Layer.  But this discovery was but a sideshow to his life's crowning scientific work - Gaia Theory.  Gaia proposes that the Earth acts like a living organism, precisely regulating its temperature and climate to provide the perfect 'Goldilocks' conditions for life.  Originally dismissed as New Age nonsense, Gaia has since been vindicated - it now forms the keystone of contemporary climate science and is at the centre of the IPCC's prediction models.  Gaia is a truly groundbreaking idea which many compare to the revelation that the Earth is not the centre of the universe.

But Lovelock now urges us to take heed - 'Global Heating', as he calls it, is woefully underestimated, outstripping even the most disastrous models of the IPCC.  He implores us to lift our heads from the sand and confront our willful denial in the face of impending catastrophe.  The time to act is now!

Award-winning director Stevan Riley (Blue Blood, Fire in Babylon, Everything or Nothing) has been granted an exclusive 20 hours of interview with Lovelock.  At 93 years of age, James Lovelock is remarkably energetic and spritely, but nevertheless, he encourages us to film as soon as possible.  We appeal to the Kickstarter community to help us seize this incredible opportunity, and allow the true grandfather of the environmental movement to deliver his parting advice to the youth of today.

--------------------------

WHY NOW?

It is 2013 and still we remain trapped in a cycle of denial, skepticism, lethargy and helplessness with regard to climate change.  Consider...

It is well over 40 years since his ideas became mainstream and the human race woke up to global climate change.

It is 14 years since Kyoto brought for a fleeting moment a political consensus to support action.

It is six years since Al Gore recruited the world to the banner of ‘An Inconvenient Truth’.

Yet there has been no shifting the pace of change.

‘The Best of All Possible Worlds’ comes not a moment too soon.  It is the last chance for the man who first opened our eyes to the problem to explain the state we are in and ask why we continue to watch ourselves walking off the cliff.  How did we get to this point?  What uncertainties lie ahead as we push the earth beyond its fragile equilibrium?  How ought we face the challenges that threaten our survival?

--------------------------

THE STORY

Lovelock's personal story is fascinating - covering his pioneering work for the British government during World War II; his role searching for life on Mars with NASA; and his recruitment as scientific expert for the CIA and MI6.  Lovelock was everyone's 'go-to' man, but despite this he remained fiercely independent: the archetypal rebel inventor and free thinker.  But such independent thought is frightening to some and Lovelock has spent a lifetime battling naysayers in his solitary crusade of clear logic and common sense.  Lovelock will confront his critics on the divisive issues of nuclear power and measures to curb population.  But he has plenty more up his sleeve.  In 'The Best of All Possible Worlds' Lovelock will point the way to a new paradigm where our intelligence may yet save us.

Central to the film, of course, is the story of Gaia itself.  From the first dawn of life on planet earth, Lovelock will be our guide through 3.5 billion years of evolution to the marvellous emergence of the self-sustaining super-organism that is Gaia.

STYLE

Stevan intends to film the interviews in groundbreaking fashion, using multiple cameras and motion control within a specialised green screen sound stage.  With use of visual effects & animation, Stevan wishes to embed Lovelock within a Gaian inspired ‘living’ space which visually reacts and responds to the spoken word as well the film’s rousing soundtrack and audio scape.  The film’s presentation will be designed to capture the imagination of today’s youth and thinking adults alike.  The days of ‘Inconvenient Truth’ and Powerpoint are gone.  ‘The Best of All Possible Worlds’ will be funky, vibrant and surprising with visual edge and musical rhythm.  The intention is not just to educate but also to entertain.

We thank you for your support,

Stevan Riley and Greg McKneally

FAQ

Can we exceed the goal?

YES!  And it will be amazing if we can. Kickstarter will allow as much money as is given before the deadline. There is a lot more of this film to make, so any additional funds will allow us to pay our crew (who are currently working unpaid), and will go towards the budget for the next and final phase of the film's production.  Any additional help is greatly appreciated.

£20,000 seems like a low number for a movie budget. Doesn’t it?

This is not the budget for the full movie, but is solely to finance the initial interview with the film's star, James Lovelock. This interview will be a cornerstone of our film.  Meeting our fundraising goal is crucial for us to be able to film Lovelock at such short notice, in order to make this project a reality.  Once 'in the can', we are confident that we will have the vital springboard to raise the rest of the budget.  Given Lovelock's age, there is an imperative to film him as soon as possible.

Who does the money go to?

Every penny (minus the fees for Kickstarter’s involvement) will go directly to the production budget. We are dedicated to bringing Lovelock's voice to as many people as we can. The rewards will be created by the artists involved in the production pro bono.

What’s in the digital download package?

Everyone who donates at least £25 will receive our digital download package. We are still adding to this package, but here is what we have confirmed so far. This will include the following:

- Official 'The Best of All Possible Worlds'  promotional material. Digital copies of posters, wallpapers, banners, etc

- A document with selections of the raw interview transcript.

- Selected clips and outtakes.

Can I increase my pledge once it’s been made?

If you'd like to, absolutely. Once you have donated to our campaign, if you want to alter your incentive reward to a different one, or change your pledge amount,  first go to Kickstarter and sign in. On our campaign page, the green “Back This Project” button will have been replaced with a blue “Manage Your Donation” button. Click it and you can enter a new amount, or choose a new incentive.

What happens to the interview after the film is made?

After the film has finished distribution, we will hand the full transcript of the interview to the British Library in order to preserve the information so that researchers, campaigners and the general public can benefit from Prof. Lovelock's words for decades to come.

Risks and challenges

The only risk that we face in the short term is that we won't be able to raise enough to accomplish the interview. At 93 Lovelock is still remarkably energetic and spritely, but given the uncertainties of age he urges us to proceed as soon as possible.

The risk in the next phase concerns whether we're able to raise remaining budget for the film of over $500k (to cover original filming and cutting-edge VFX). We are very confident given the esteem in which Lovelock is held internationally and also Stevan's reputation as a filmmaker that this amount will be forthcoming, as long as we can get this initial bit of filming accomplished.
