To commission surveys of The Whiteladies Picture House so we can produce architectural artwork that will help save the building.

Final chance to back the project ends tonight at 11.59pm. Thanks to the unbelievable generosity of Bristol (and beyond) we exceeded our goal with five days to spare.  But, people kept on pledging...

If you were thinking of backing the project but hadn't got round to it, today is your last opportunity to get your hands on some of our fabulous rewards. Please pledge today and remind friends, family and colleagues one last time.

We made our target, but with one final push we could do so much more:

  • The production of further architectural drawings to contribute towards planning applications and further funding applications.
  • Employ cinema/theatre & acoustic consultants to provide input to the concept design.
  • Employ a quantity surveyor to assess the value of the project and the construction budget.

As part of our continuing work to preserve the Whiteladies Picture House as an important heritage asset we wish to carry out more detailed research into the building's interesting history - from its conception by architects La Trobe and Weston to its 1970s conversion into three screens and finally the changes that have taken place since its closure.

Our aim is to survey the building in its current state in order to fully understand its history and how the building has been used in the past.

We will then use this information to produce 3 unique pieces of artwork that will showcase the building's future potential.

The artwork will be presented on A1 paper and will consist of hand drawn pen & ink pieces created by Jonathan Lees a highly skilled conservation architect and artist. Each drawing will take approximately 100 hours to produce.

By becoming a backer you will be helping to finance our research and the surveys needed to save the building.

Everyone involved in the Whiteladies Picture House has given their time for free to work on the project. Jonathan has already given hours to the project, but due to the sheer number of hours of work required to produce these designs he is unable to continue without financial support.

Please help the project and become a backer today!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

This project has few risks - the current owner of the Whiteladies Picture House is happy for us to enter the building to carry out our surveys and research work.

We believe we have put together a good range of rewards and as long as we reach our funding goal we will be able to create the Artwork without issue.

FAQ

  • The conceptual artwork will be accurate architectural pen and ink drawings that take 100s of hours to complete and need to be based on a full structural survey. We need £10,000 to pay for the survey itself and to cover the time of Jonathan Lees Architects http://www.jonathanleesarchitects.co.uk/services.html to undertake these professional drawings.

  • Because we propose using the space for multiple uses including cinema, theatre, comedy club, live music venue, restaurant, and roof terrace bar we need more than one type of survey. These include topographical, structural, acoustic, electrical and many more. These surveys then need be interpreted by our team of architects and fed into our business plan and model. Furthermore, because this is a Grade II Listed Building on the Bristol City Council “At Risk” register, the surveys will also need to comprise all major and minor faults found within the property, and the implications that these faults will have:

    • How much the repairs for these defects will cost to rectify.• Testing for dampness of the walls, and results for these tests.• Testing of all woodwork for damp and woodworm, and the results of these tests.• Investigation into the condition of damp proofing, insulation and drainage - although the drains will not actually be tested.• Technical information about how the property was constructed, and all materials which were used in the process.• Proposals for any further special inspections and subsequent work which may need to be done on the property, due to findings during the survey.

  • The surveys will allow us to assess the damage to the interior and exterior of the building, understand the costs of conservation and complete our feasibility study into whether our plans are financially viable. The surveys will also be used to produce conceptual artwork and highly detailed architectural plans. Lastly, we need the surveys because we cannot speak with real authority on how to progress our proposal without knowing all the costs and pitfalls involved. In fact, anyone taking on this project would have to do exactly the same as us because the first questions that investors, banks and grant funds would ask is, "what are the costs and are these reliable?"

  • We have permission from the owner to access the building and undertake the survey.

  • We have an agreement in principal and will update soon.

  • The survey will help us to complete the feasibility study based on actual figures and costs. The topographical survey will enable the architectural plans. A quantity survey will tell us what the cost of those plans are and these will both inform our business model and help us to formulate a strategic and phased realisation of our envisaged renovation of the building.
