The New Mexico Burners are creating a CORE art project to take to this year's Burning Man in Black Rock City, NV. The theme this year is Fertility and we are creating Kokopelli Rising, in honor of that theme.
Kokopelli will stand 12 feet tall atop an 8 feet tall, 20 ft. diameter round platform surrounded by dried salt cedar, forming a cool and enticing place to gather, away from the sun and dust on the playa. He will have flames shooting out of his head, flute and at dawn on August 29, he will rise and shoot flames out of his phallus. On the evening of August 29, he will join the other CORE projects and burn bright on the playa! Please help us bring Kokopelli Rising to the playa!
Here is a 1/2 Scale mock-up of our project:
Some of our rewards:
Our Needs: Funds raised will be used to buy wood, metal, piping, fittings and hardware to create our piece and transport it to the playa. We also hope to raise enough money to buy propane fuel (for nightly flame effects) and extra fuel wood to help him burn along with the other Core of Regional Effigies at Burning Man.
Our Crew Working on Kokopelli 3.0
Kokopelli was a well-travelled and universally recognized deity of the American SouthWest. Kokopelli had a hunch back, enormous phallus, and played the flute to announce that he was a friend, not an enemy, to the pueblos he visited. He was welcomed at planting time, as he was an important part of fertility rites.
