About this project
Iowa Air in a Jar.
From Allamakee to Pottawattamie, Buchanan to Washington, Black Hawk to Hancock - and everywhere in between - I’ll be collecting Iowa Air in jars from all of Iowa’s 99 counties and documenting the journey.
The purpose of this project is to explore the changing landscape of Iowa by capturing the essence of its present form in midst of its transitional history from prairie to rural farmland to suburban sprawl. As part of this evolving narrative of the state, the project will focus on the relationships between nature and human interventions in the landscape. As an architecture student, I am interested in large-scale interactions of the built environment with nature. The photographs of this project examine this notion at a smaller scale resulting in an architectural metaphor. Some pictures will be nature overgrowing the ruins of a human intervention and some will perhaps be a single weed breaking through the asphalt.
As I travel between all 99 counties, I will be in search of moments that speak to this purpose. At these moments, I will simply open a jar and let it fill with Iowa Air. This serves as a method for capturing and preserving the essence of a particular time and place. The act combines the physical and tactile notion of a jar and lid with the abstract notion of air and the essence a place. At each of these moment, I will also be photographing the jar in the location I have discover in that county as a secondary means of capturing a moment in time.
The project will culminate in a photo book featuring pictures from all 99 counties and other aspects of the journey. Part of this project also involves sending these jars to other states and countries. This is not just to create rewards but serves as a way to protect these vessels of Iowa Air and share a part of my state with others.
Proper Tire Rotation and Other Logistics
The 99-county tour is a feat often used by politicians and journalist to grasp what Iowa is and who Iowans are. It is the quintessential way to understand the state. This summer I want to travel to all 99 counties of Iowa capturing moments in the historical narrative of my state. The optimal path for this journey has been calculated to be 2,739 miles long (roughly 55.5 hours of driving). Of course, my trip will take me off the beaten path searching for subject matter for photographs and will likely be much longer.
Every jar used in this endeavor will be found in Iowa. They will be collected from friends and family, obtained at garage sales, and procured from other second-hand sources. These will not be jars bought in bulk from a local big box store. Each will have its own unique qualities and history. This stipulation may sound noble, but I assure you it is only because I love garage sales.
The journey is the reward for me. Your rewards are listed to the right. Here's your chance to contribute to the cause, get a stockpile of fresh Iowa Air for the Apocalypse, or have a photo book on your coffee table to show all your yuppie friends.
All reward levels will allow you to view additional content and updates posted during the excursion. Thank you for viewing.
