Finally, a parenting book that won’t scare the crap out of you!
Yes - it’s happening. The hilarious, stylish, ballsy, sarcastic trail-blazers behind the wildly successful 'Anti-Mommy Blog', The Rebel Mama, are venturing beyond the online world, and compiling their favourite posts with some additional tales of their parenting trials and tribulations into a real-life BOOK!
A PARENTING HANDBOOK (vol 1. Early Motherhood) will give a very honest, very open and very funny glimpse into the ever-so-terrifying stages of PREGNANCY, LABOUR & DELIVERY, NEWBORNDOM, BABYDOM, AND TODDLERHOOD (scariest 'hood ever).
But don't worry, the women who are lucky enough to read this book straight-out-of-the-gate will walk boldly into motherhood with their heads held high, knowing that they've got a group of badass, miss-matched, rebel sisters who have their backs.
Never again will you have to think about what to gift the mom-to-be or new-mom in your life - this book is going to revolutionize the way we welcome women into Motherhood.
What a time to be alive!
OK BUT DOES THE WORLD REALLY NEED ANOTHER F***CKING PARENTING BOOK?
Why yes, yes it does, because The Rebel Mama’s Handbook For Parents has a very different message than all those other parenting books.
Through a series of essays based on their existing online publication, The Rebel Mamas are ready to embark upon a literary journey to discuss parenting in a way that encourages moms the world over to chill the F out and not get too wrapped up in the “cult of motherhood” wherein every ounce of energy is invested in our kids, leaving us feeling depleted and unfulfilled.
This alternative to the typical parenting book endeavours to use The Rebel Mamas’ unapologetic honesty to encourage camaraderie rather than competition; it will inspire women to work through the mom-guilt in order to allow themselves the grace they need to unabashedly pursue their goals and passions outside of parenting.
WAIT… MOMS? HAVING GOALS AND PASSIONS OUTSIDE OF PARENTING?
Um, yeah. Moms having goals and passions outside of parenting. It’s 2017.
SO WHO ARE THE REBEL MAMAS?
A Rebel is a person who resists authority, control, or convention… Nikita Stanley and Aleksandra Jassem are rebels with a cause, and they are on a mission to revolutionize the way we tell the story of motherhood. In the fall of 2013, the two (both of whom were likely the last 2 people anyone would have bet on to be the first in their group of friends to procreate) accidentally wound up pregnant within six weeks of each other.
During their respective obsessive internet scouring (that’s what you do when you find out you’re pregnant, by the way) they discovered the dark underbelly of the online mommy world. What they saw scared them enough to make them decide that moms the world over - badass women who happen to have a kid or 2 - deserved something better; something cooler.
With that, The Rebel Mama was born and it has since transformed into something that far exceeded their wildest expectations.
With a steadily growing community and a desire to help women realize that there is more than one path through motherhood, Nikita and Aleks can’t wait to bring one last baby into the world and they are pumped that this one won’t have to be cut out of their abdomens like all the other ones were. #pieceofcake
ORIGINAL GOAL: 22K
Reaching our initial goal will literally buy us the time to compile the book (5 months, to be exact) and one month to shop it to publishers. (more details below under "Risks and Challenges")
STRETCH GOAL ONE: 35K
If we reach our FIRST stretch goal, we will be able to add contributors to the book that have become revered favourites on the site. Not only will the content be diversified, but we’ll get to compensate our fellow Rebels for their art and that itself is a massive dream come true. We are only ever as badass as the company we keep.
STRETCH GOAL TWO: 50K
If we reach our SECOND stretch goal, we will be able to self publish! WaHoo! That means a guarantee that we’ll be able to maintain complete creative control over the book. Nobody censoring us or editing us down - you’ll get exactly what we’re known best for: The straight goods with a strict no-bullshit policy.
STRETCH GOAL THREE: 60K
If we reach our THIRD stretch goal, we’ll be able to print the kind of book we stationery freaks dream about at night. Dense-weight, textured cover, rosegold fore edge, tassle page saver. If we reach this amount, this book will feel great in your hands and look great on your bedside. If we reach this amount, the nerds living within our leather-jacket-clad outer selves will die happy.
STRETCH GOAL FOUR: 75K
If we reach our ultimate dream goal (aka stretch goal FOUR), we’ll be able to do all of the above, plus pursue another massive Rebel Mama goal, which is to open a philanthropic branch of the brand that will start close to home by offering support to local women’s shelters and children’s literacy programs.
Without a doubt, the Rebel Tribe will offer you words of wisdom, a platform to vent, a secret society, an endless supply of answers to the many questions that mothers desperately need and a collection of some of the most intriguing, unique, hilarious women that the world has to offer. - Sarah M.
I love that there are people out there who are just like me. People who can admit that while motherhood is indeed awesome, you can also refer to your kids as a**holes every so often and still be considered a loving parent. - Natasha T.
As a Rebel Auntie I feel insanely prepared for when I eventually have my own spawn to love/freak me out; I'm comforted by the fact that when the time comes for me to have kids, I'll be warmly welcomed into the most badass tribe of women around - warm, supportive women who lift each other up and proudly celebrate the biggest and smallest of wins. - Alexandria S.
The Rebel Mama community provides endless entertainment as there's some down right funny sh*t that comes along with being a mama and if you can't laugh about it, then what's the point of all the craziness? - Nikki S.
You guys provided me with an outlet to share my PPD story! All your love was such an awesome shining light for me when I really needed it. - Michelle S.
I used to be afraid of "Moms" - I didn't like them and I didn't want to be them. I had accepted I was gonna be a lone-wolf of a mama, but thanks to you girls, I don't have do this alone and I can just be me. Rebel Mama for life!!!!!!!!! - Natalie R.
It has allowed me to feel supported and not judged by the decisions I make as a mama. And MOST importantly, like I have a community behind me throughout all stages of this incredibly difficult journey! I only wish I could have joined when my little guy was a newborn. - Aishling D.
Risks and challenges
The RISK is low - we already KNOW our writing resonates with modern mothers and we have the community to prove it (47k Rebels and counting!).
Our CHALLENGE in writing this book is time. We’ve built the community we have today from the ground up and we’ve done it amidst tantrums and meltdowns, mealtimes and nap times. We’ve spent two years writing posts after bedtime and waking up before dawn to edit. Your pledges will allow us to put The Rebel Mama’s Handbook For Parents together within the next five months.
In that time, we’ll be able to actually dedicate a designated amount of time to it without having to be puked on, yelled for, or sucked on (#nursingmamasolidarity) for once in our lives.
Upon completion of the book, we will either shop it to publishing houses (the publisher will be informed of how we got our start and will be made fully aware of "pre-orders" for backers of $200+) OR, if we reach our SECOND STRETCH GOAL of $50k (fingers & toes crossed!), we will hire editors, proofreaders, lawyers and printers ourselves and self-publish the most badass book of all time (featuring both our work and that of some of our most beloved Rebel Mama contributors).
Depending on which route we take to publishing, the timeline of shipping the completed book itself may vary, but we vow to keep in touch with our backers every step of the way so you'll know exactly when you can expect your Rebel Mama swag to turn up in the mail.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
