About

Corporate Shadows by Mike Haverty is a Two or Four Player action based card game where players manipulate corporate assets and initiate covert operations against opposing criminal organizations. Support from one of the two major solar system wide governments, research and military actions bolster the players' stance and eventual outcome of the shadowy maneuvers between the players.

We are bringing some more fun and action into the world of card games along with a solid theme that we are growing into future games. Cards feature unique artwork, theme building quotes and variable actions that take place in The Solar Wars setting. We've been working on the development of the game for over two years and have several hundred hands of playtesting completed with more ongoing every week.

A full game takes approximately 30 minutes to reach end game and plays either 2 or 4 players. The mechanics featured in the game include rummy-style asset collection, a manipulable push-your-luck action mechanism and variable teams that are formed during each round.

Our plan is to have three streamlined pledge tiers to keep the cost of the game low.  For those interested in just the game, the Standard pledge is all you need.  For those who want a bit more, check out the Deluxe or Luxury pledges.

  • Basic:  1 Game, Stretch Goals.

  • Deluxe: 1 Game, Stretch Goals, Art Prints and Theme PDF.
      •                       Signed Box: Lid to be signed by the Game Designer
      • Luxury: 1 Game, Stretch Goals, Signed lid and Custom Artwork card
      •                       Custom Artwork Card: We will work with you to use either a portrait of your choice or description to create a theme-appropriate custom character card to be supplied as part of the Kickstarter as one of the Corporate Characters
Corporate Shadows contains the following components:
  • Game Box: Two piece box where the cards sit in two stacks side by side.
  • Game Cards: 99 Game cards split up between Corporate/Alliance Assets and Action cards.
  • Oversight Tracking Card
  • Rulesheet

Rules (Draft):

The full draft rules for Corporate Shadows is available through the link below.  The rules also include examples of the cards, both Corporate Assets and Oversight Cards.  A short Summary of Turn Order and the Oversight Mechanism.  These are short paraphrased summaries.  Full Rules are in the link.

Player's Turn:

  • At the beginning of a player's turn, the Active Player draws either two cards from the draw deck or the top card of the Discard Pile.
  • After drawing, the player may form as many corporations as she desires by playing three or more Corporate Assets of the same corporation face up in front of her.
  • Additionally, she may lay one or more Corporate Assets faceup in front of her provided that any player has already formed that Corporation.
  • At any point during her turn, she may play one and only one Operation Card that scores immediate points or manipulates the game state.
  • At the end of her turn, the Active Player must discard one card.

Oversight & Operation Cards:

Oversight represents how much the governments and the High Court is watching the actions of the players. Should Oversight ever reach a high enough level, the High Court steps in and shuts down the illegal activities before it has a system wide effect on commerce, the real ruler of the solar system.

Once this happens, whichever indiscreet individual, i.e. the player who pushed the envelope and got caught, scores no points for his Corporate Assets while the quieter more manipulative players score their assets as normal.

Anatomy of Cards
Anatomy of Cards
  • Operation Cards may be played by the Active Player, but only once per turn.  These cards come in two style, Oversight Operation cards and normal Operation Cards.
  • A normal operation card has an effect that takes place automatically with no chance of the High Court focusing its ever watchful surveillance might down upon the player.
  • An Oversight Operation though is just outlandish enough that someone may notice those actions.  If any single player holds an Asset from that corporation, the High Court starts mobilizing its agents until such time as enough hi-jinks are occurring that they step in.

We love stretch goals, we really do, but the game is self-contained and complete as it is now, so just adding more cards doesn't make sense. Instead, we want to enhance the quality of the game's components.

$10,000 - The Fancy Box: Want the box to be even more beautiful?  Well then, reaching this level of funding provides that even more beautiful box.  Spot UV, sturdy box that can hold an elephant (not actually Elephants but really large guinea pigs) and colors that will take your breath away are what we are talking about.  Instead of a tuckbox, we'll be shooting for a double deck setup box.

With the light weight size of Corporate Shadows, shipping of the pledge will be going through USPS for patrons in the United States. Tracking numbers for US Based patrons will be provided upon shipping of the pledge rewards.

For International Patrons, we will be partnering with Ideassptacher (http://www.ideaspatcher.com).  For these patrons, we will be working to ensure that the package arrives in a timely manner.  Additionally, as the packages will be shipping out of France, we will be covering the VAT as it is imported from the factory.

Shipping costs are added by Kickstarter via their automated system.  The shipping costs are $6 for the US and $11 for World Wide Shipping.

Only a decade bridges the Peace Treaty that ended the Second Solar War and the present year.  Signed aboard The Collective's flagship, the MB-2 Olympia, the Peace Treaty marked the end of war profiteering for the High Corporations and the start of the post-war rebuilding and its associated wealth.

With the High Corporations striving to out maneuver their corporate foes, the nouveau riche seek to wrest control of the corporations from their current owners and forge new corporate conglomerates to rule Earth and her Colonies through the power of wealth.

Contributors:

Corporate Shadows is to be our third published game, after 1955:The War of Espionage and Schlock Mercenary:Capital Offensive. It is the first game in one of our two new lines, The Solar Wars series. We wanted a game to drive the creation of some excellent artwork, to provide tidbits of theme to feed into future games and to bring what we believe is a great action based rummy style game to the market at a very reasonable price point.

Mike Haverty: Game Designer.  Mike worked hard on the design for Corporate Shadows and was instrumental in bringing it to its completion.  His design in Cold War Rummy was awarded second place in the Mystery Rummy Contest on BoardGameGeek.Com.

Luther Bell Hendricks V: Developer working on Corporate Shadows.  Luther is one of the team responsible for the game design for Sentinel Tactics that was co-published with Greater Than Games.  Luther also worked on Dragon Tides, a Bruce Lee board game.

Peter Wocken: Graphic Designer, Freelance.  Peter has an amazing resume and has worked for many great publishing companies, including a long stint at Fantasy Flight Games.

John Ariosa: Illustrator, Freelance. I came across John's artwork on BoardGameGeek and several other locations and it impressed me.  I reached out to him to provide illustrations for two corporations and after working with him commissioned another two corporations worth of illustrations.

Carl Holden: Illustrator, Freelance.  Carl provided the the illustrations for the Action/Oversight cards and two corporations (G.A.M.A. and M.E.D.I.A.).  His work, based on the descriptions provided, helped to start setting the visual theme in place and gave us the excellent cover image that is also the card image for Research & Development.

Oscar Ottosson: Illustator, Freelance.  Simultaneous with work from John Ariosa, Oscar has been assisting us by providing the artwork for two corporations and the two government alliances.  He has been a pleasure to work with through out the project.  You can see his work in Bernin-Mieyer, BioGestalt-Anderson, The Collective and the Lunar-Earth Organziation.

   Nicholas Vitek: Owner, Coordinator.

Playtesters Galore: We have a large number of playtesters who have helped out in one form or another through the last few years.  We want to thank every last one of them for their assistance.

Risks and challenges

Shipping: Shipping presented an issue with our previous Kickstarter (Schlock Mercenary:Capital Offensive) due to our use of a specific fulfillment company. The last project had approximately 20 pledges out of 1,000 that were not shipped out initially by the company and were later shipped out by our team. We've ceased using that company and are working with a new partner for international shipping. We also have had a series of issues with one shipment being returned multiple times for non-delivery, but continue to try and get it to its intended recipient.

Project Delay: To reduce chances of delays for production and fulfillment, we've commissioned the artwork, graphic illustration and design work ahead of the Kickstarter and have 95% of the artwork completed and laid out. The only part that isn't complete are the 8 Corporate Monopoly Cards. Estimated time for completion of the artwork after the KS is 4 weeks.

Multiple Projects: I have mentioned in the past that we plan on having 3 projects going at once on our end. All of them are small box games and all of them are either complete (like Corporate Shadows) or are nearing completion (such as Chain of Command and Data Fortress). We will be utilizing the same manufacturer to reduce overall costs. The shipments are planned to operate independently if timing doesn't work out as opposed to holding one up for another.
