About this project
With all of your love and support, we have successfully reached funding status... THANK YOU!!! We're now aiming for $7500 to help fund the purchase of stands for our brand new drums and traditional Japanese uniforms! Your continued support will mean so much to us :)
We are so excited to have reached our goal early... all because of each of YOUR support! This gives us the opportunity to expand our project to raise additional funds for the purchase of stands for our brand new drums and traditional Japanese outfits for our performances. With an additional $1500, we will be able to get different stands that would allow us to play our brand new drums in all sorts of positions-- upright, side ways, slanted, on the ground (using our abs!)... you name it! This will most definitely help us expand our repertoire of songs. Additionally, this stretch goal will also help us purchase approximately 20 Japanese outfits that are traditionally worn by taiko players. With a combination of real taiko drums on a variety of stands, uniforms, and most importantly, our super powerful 'taiko spirit', we will be able to share the authentic, yet diverse, taiko experience at our end-of-the-year concert and at a variety of future performances for the community. So we would really appreciate your continued support in helping us reach our 'stretch' goal of $7500!!!
... and don't forget about our FANTASTIC original rewards, designed exclusively for our Kickstarter project by our in-team Japanese designer. 超かわいいー！！！(cho- kawaii! = super cute!). Pledges of $25 or greater also come with a pair of tickets to our inaugural end-of-the-year concert :)
THANK YOU SO MUCH to each of you who have helped us get to this point. We are ecstatic and will forever be grateful for your generous support!!!
Spread the TAIKO love! From basket drums to real taiko drums
Taiko (太鼓) in Japanese signifies "big fat drum" (太 = massive/grand, fat; 鼓 = drum), and it is a form of traditional Japanese music and art that combines powerful beats with dynamic movements.
The UQ Japanese Taiko Drumming Team is a brand new non-profit, open-to-the-community taiko team based in Brisbane, Australia, formed in March 2014, to spread the joy of this beautiful and energizing art form. In just over 1 month from being established, we are already a team of 71 super enthusiastic members from 16 different countries, connected through the joy of learning and spreading the taiko love. Our current team name originates from where we started (UQ or the University of Queensland), but our team concept is "Minna no taiko (みんなの太鼓)", which in Japanese means "taiko drumming for anyone and everyone!" Our members, therefore, include students and staff from the university, but also extend to those from the greater Brisbane community.
The UQ Japanese Taiko Drumming Team is in serious need for REAL taiko drums!
While we now have a solid team of members with lots of energy, drive, and enthusiasm to spread the taiko love, we are still missing the the big guys... Yes! We really need a set of REAL TAIKO DRUMS!!!
Because we are a brand new non-profit organization with a limited budget, we are currently playing on taped-up laundry baskets and handcrafted up-cycled drums that we made from recycled cardboard barrels, packaging tape, and old bicycle tire rings. These make-shift "drums" are great for practices, but because we endeavor to share the beauty, joy, and wonders of taiko in its entirety (including the powerful beats of REAL taiko drums!), we are eager to purchase a set of real taiko drums that we can bring to public performances and community workshops.
If we meet the goal for this Kickstarter project, you will help us purchase a set of 5 real "nagado/chu" taiko drums-- these are the standard, big taiko drums that are typically featured in taiko performances (or if you Google "taiko"). In Australia, each of these taiko drums cost over $1,000, which means that your contributions will help us pay for the cost of 5 real taiko drums + stands for the drums + freight.
But what exactly will come out of this Kickstarter project?
To celebrate all the support that we get through this Kickstarter project, we would like to hold our team's INAUGURAL END-OF-THE-YEAR CONCERT this upcoming December 2014, where we can showcase our very first year's worth of work on the beautiful REAL taiko drums that you help us purchase. For our team to be able to provide the most powerful, dynamic, authentic, and inspirational taiko performance that we can possibly deliver, it is essential that we have a set of real taiko drums on which we can perform. With your help in funding our Kickstarter project, we can together make our very first and very own concert happen!
From the end-of-the-year concert and beyond: Your help and support will go a LONG (or loud!) way in spreading the TAIKO LOVE
Your generous contributions will help the UQ Japanese Taiko Drumming Team to share the joy of taiko with LOTS of people in the greater Brisbane community, many of whom have never even heard of taiko before. In addition to our end-of-the-year concert, we endeavor to spread the taiko love at as many occasions as possible. Taiko performances are invited to a wide range of events, such as cultural festivals, sporting events, university functions (e.g., graduation), fundraisers, weddings, and even to black-tie events... the possibilities are infinite! We are also hoping to give others in the community the opportunity to try taiko drumming for themselves, through public taiko workshops and school workshops for children. The music and art of taiko drumming has already captured so many people's hearts around the world, and our ultimate goal is to keep spreading this 'taiko love'.
"Spread the taiko love!" みんなの太鼓 (Minna no taiko) song project
Finally, as part of our Kickstarter project, we also want to get YOU involved in spreading the taiko love. To do this, we will be creating a "Spread the taiko love!" みんなの太鼓 (Minna no taiko) song-- a collaborative taiko-fusion piece that we'll compose together! The goal is to have as many taiko groups, a variety of musicians, artists, and anyone else who's interested from all around the world to contribute elements (e.g., an excerpt of beats) to create a song together. We will make a music video for this collaborative piece at the completion of our Kickstarter project, and we want to feature you and your group performing the part that you've composed. Once the music video is made, we will post it on our Facebook page and would also love for you to share it with all of your family, friends, and colleagues... and, of course, perform the song at YOUR special events! We will be performing this song at our end-of-the-year concert :)
Rewards from our Hearts
Your kind support and generosity will not go unrewarded!
We are grateful of everyone who donates, no matter the amount. As a small (but heartfelt!) 'thank you' for backing our project, the names of every donor will be included on our Taiko Lovers Donor list, which we will post on our Facebook page and will also feature in the credits for our "Spread the taiko love!" みんなの太鼓 song music video. Each one of our donors will also receive an exclusive Taiko Lover avatar image.
For those of you who generously make a pledge over $25 AUD, we have a range of original "Spread the taiko love!" collectibles that we are so excited to share with you! All the artwork was created exclusively for our Kickstarter project by our in-team Japanese designer, Ryotaro Eguchi. Each of the 'omamori' good luck charms will be handcrafted by our members.
Here is a sneak peak of our rewards. For more details, please check out the sidebar 'Rewards' section:
Last but not least, we'd like to cordially invite ALL of our supporters to our end-of-the-year concert that, with YOUR help, we can make it happen! For those of you who make a pledge over $25 AUD, we'd like to send you 2 tickets to this special event... 1 for you and 1 for your companion :)
Risks and challenges
We have endeavored to minimize the risks and challenges involved with this project, but as with any Kickstarter campaign, there are no guarantees.
There is a risk that sudden price increases for either the drums or shipping will affect how many drums we are able to afford.
We cannot confirm the exact date and venue of the end-of-the-year concert until our Kickstarter project is successfully funded. While we intend to hold our end-of-the-year concert this December, it is possible that it may be held in the months preceding or following December 2014. Additionally, we intend to hold the concert in a venue on the University of Queensland St. Lucia campus (Brisbane), however, it is possible that we may use a venue that is off-campus, elsewhere in Brisbane.
For the private gig and private gig + workshop rewards, practical obstacles such as transport, space, and local noise ordinances at the venue may prevent us from being able to perform and/or provide the workshop at your first-preference date and location. However, we will work with you to reach an agreeable outcome for everyone.
We already have arrangements in place for printed rewards such as the stickers, origami paper, and postcards. While we do not expect any delays or issues, there is always that very slim chance that the printer will malfunction or something similarly drastic will happen. In such a worst-case scenario, your rewards may be delayed, but we will strive to deliver them in a timely manner.
Finally, our hand-crafted rewards (personalized letters, omamori charms) will be written and handmade by members of the UQ Japanese Taiko Drumming Team, so how soon we can deliver these rewards will depend on the number of backers pledging at these tiers. We will do our best to get them out by the estimated delivery date, even if we manage to get a larger-than-expected number of backers, but just in case we don't... we would appreciate your patience!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
