Self-taught piano player Paul Meadors is ready to record an album of fantastic themes and beautiful melodies.

Back in 1998 I spent two hours on a school cafeteria stage, playing a school piano, with a rudimentary microphone recording some of my piano compositions. From a master copy of this session I made about 100 physical CDs using my father’s Photoshop abilities and his color ink-jet printer. There was also a goofy picture of me next to a piano that I wish I could erase from existence. Gotta love the 90s. While it was nice to have my piano music on a hard copy I’ve always dreamed of a bigger and better project – and now you can be involved in the next phase of my piano music through Kickstarter.

As a full-time teacher, coach, husband, and father to three daughters I’ve sat at the piano whenever I could find a moment or two and play a theme that popped into my head, usually at random times throughout the day. I would simply sit and improvise. These were moments that allowed me to be creative and enjoy the gift that God has given me.

If I happen to play something that I liked, I always hoped that I could remember it the next time I sat down. I would build on those themes and then piece them together. Despite never receiving any formal piano training I'd like to think my music is a mix of themes inspired by my love of movie soundtracks and artists like John Tesh (minus the classic chin) and Yanni (minus the grand mustache). Movie composers such as John Williams and James Horner create such beautiful and lush themes that I try to emulate as well. Below are two examples of my music. The first song was played for a church service and the second is taken from my first album:

Solo Piano from Church Service

Subtle Serenity from First Album

Sometimes I would scratch down the names of the chords I used on a sheet of paper I kept near the piano. Other times I would place my iPhone on top of the piano and hit record. And once I had an opening of a song pop into my head while laying on the couch watching a baseball game. It was an exciting part of the game so I pressed record on my iPhone and sang the tune while still laying on the couch. Also, I’m lucky enough to have a piano in my classroom where my students would be my beta-testers for new material. Pronoun lesson? We don’t need no stinkin’ pronoun lesson, let’s listen to Mr. Meadors new piano masterpiece.

My plan is to record at least 12 of my original songs and release both a digital download album and a hard-copy CD. All songs are ready to be recorded. With this project I will carefully craft every step of the way, making sure that the music is finalized exactly as it is in my head. I’m not cutting any corners this time around. I plan on recording the music in late August with a final product released in September or October.

If you like what you hear please check out the cool rewards on the right hand side. For one of the levels I will even record an improvisational song just for you.

The money pledged by you will cover the costs of the recording sessions, post-production, video production, photography, and creating the physical CDs. If my goal is reached and stretched I may have the opportunity to hire some great musicians to join me on a couple of songs. I plan on creating a very nicely done CD package which will include four panels with color pictures and liner notes. The great aspect of Kickstarter is that we get to share this musical journey together and every level of donation receives the entire collection of music I record. It’s a win-win situation for everyone. If my goal is not met, I don’t see how I can proceed with the vision for my music in this capacity (insert sad face icon here). I am very excited about my project and am confident that I can lay down some beautiful tunes.

So, let’s get this party started and make a great sounding album together – one that we all can enjoy and be proud of.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

Ironic that there are "risks and challenges" associated with a Kickstarter project. First of all, I'm a very driven person evidenced by the publication of my book, LETTERS TO EBAY, from a major book publisher back in 2007, so motivation is never an issue. Second, the past five years of my life has already been filled with risks and challenges concerning my health. I've had three major surgeries in that time-span and am in the process of a major mouth reconstructive process. The worst is behind me and it's been a long recovery process and will continue to be. I have Survived the Storm and I look at this project as an adventure, a musical expression of faith.

Obviously there are setbacks that could occur with recording and finalizing the product but I don't foresee this as an issue. I am confident that I'll be able to deliver an album that is enjoyable for everyone and a testament to faith and endurance. You can contact me with any questions you may have. Thank you!
