I like who I am #ilikewhoiam
Hi! My name is Leslie Alfredsson- the founder/creator of My Esteeme and nominee for the Female Inventor of the Year 2016.
Everything started when my niece, turned 8 years old. When I was shopping for a birthday present for her, I was surprised that the most of the toys were just reinforcing stereotypes and were not representing the diverse society we live in.
This inspired me to create My Esteeme, a edutainment concept that helps kids build healthy self-esteem and to embrace diversity. I created six dolls representing different ethnicities, a book, a song and an App that encourage kids to learn-through-play.
- 36% of girls between the ages of 7 and 10 think that looks are their most important attribute. (Source)
- Body satisfaction has significant effects on self-esteem and depression, 47.2% of students between 10-15 were dissatisfied with their body (Source)
- Boys are 2 times more likely than girls to flunk or drop out of school due to low self-esteem (Source)
Now is the time to take action and start teaching our kids that all children are equally worthy of respect no matter the color of their skin or where they come from. The My Esteeme values are battle armor kids can use against negativity, both to defend themselves and to protect others.
My Esteeme empowers children
The My Esteeme method teaches children uplifting phrases through playing with the dolls, reading the book, singing the song and interacting with the App. Through repetition and encouragement from a parent or teacher, children will internalize the values and improve their self-esteem.
The dolls, book, song and App are all available in both English and Swedish.
What does the My Esteeme Method include?
Dolls: Six dolls representing different ethnicities, so every child can identity with at least one character. Each doll has a device in their feet that, when pressed, repeats one of the following six uplifting phrases:
I am worthy, I like who I am, I am a good friend, I am helpful, I am fine the way I am and I am smart. (Click HERE and see how the dolls work).
Song and dance: The song is an upbeat pop song that includes all the phrases that the dolls repeat. Children can learn the easy dance steps and sing-along with the song. (Click HERE and listen to the song)
Book: Tells the story of the My Esteeme characters trying to be someone else but at the end, they all decide that they like who they are already.
App: The app makes the book interactive with the help of augmented reality. The audio will be available in several additional languages.
My Esteeme is a proven method
Psychologists, parents, designers, communicators and 15 pre-school teachers have all been involved in the 3 year-research-process to develop My Esteeme.
100 Swedish children tested My Esteeme for almost a year and today My Esteeme is used in Swedish preschools.
Results: The preschool teachers observed that within two weeks the children were repeating the phrases, identifying with the characters and singing-along with the song.
After three or four weeks, the teachers encouraged children adapt the phrases to include examples about themselves and other classmates.
My Esteeme is an innovation
The Swedish Office of Entrepreneurship (ALMI) has recognized My Esteeme as an innovation and funded the first doll prototypes as well as the first pre-school trials.
