A New Way to Think About Lighting
The lighting device of the 21st century, Firefly is a revolutionary new lamp using a safe low power laser and sophisticated optics. The technology we have implemented in this product is something different than what your'e use to and we think you'll love it. The lamp comes with a plug in adapter but will also run on two AAA batteries.
Our laser lamp does not "pool" around the light source like LED or other traditional sources; the laser light is "thrown" long distances and maintains its brightness. You put the light where you need it; No more old fashion lighting solutions, no more wasted energy. The passive cooling system eliminates moving parts, so the lamp produces no noise.
99.6% Recyclable and uses less than 1 watt of power (0.4 watts to be exact!) This makes the Firefly Laser Lamp a very sustainable product that is sensitive towards our environment.
Firefly is a new breed of lighting for your home or on the go. This portable lamp uses a true blue laser technology that scatters hundreds of laser lights (fireflies) and illuminates your surroundings.
The lamp can be plugged in to a standard outlet using the included power adapter; to place the lamp in strategic areas of your home or business. The laser light scatters through the darkness transforming any room into something truly incredible.
For those of you that love the outdoors, you will be happy to hear that Firefly is 100% portable using 2 AAA batteries. For those long outings the Firefly is conveniently equipped to house up to 4 batteries should the need arise. Light up your camping trip and transform the landscape into something from a fantasy story.
This 21st Century lighting concept challenges the methods of our traditional lighting fixtures. Why use a point sourced light that consumes more power? Traditional night lights use upwards of 7-10 watts of energy while the Firefly uses less than 1 watt! The difference is truly incredible and we are confident you will agree. We have designed Firefly using the highest quality materials and it is built to last.

Where will the Funding Go?
The funds will be used for tooling our proprietary blue laser design. The above pictures were captured using only a blue Firefly prototype. The manufacturing of this device is very costly; all truly blue laser lights on the market are being sold for $200++. We want to make this passion project a reality and readily available to our supporters at an affordable price. All funding will be used to create Blue Firefly Lamps for our supporters. The Firefly laser lamp has been a long time in the making and we are so excited to show it to you here for only $65. We truly appreciate your support of this project.
Every step of development has been refined and reworked to the finest detail. Even the manufacturing process has been orchestrated to yield the beautiful quality that this product deserves. Firefly has been researched, designed, and proto-typed in North Carolina, USA and Quebec Canada. The same firm developing technologies for NASA has performed the engineering design and test. The manufacturing process has been overseen in Taipei Taiwan and assembly and high-level of testing in Xiam China. Netherlands based Titoma will provide the engineering, molding, and mass manufacturing. We have enlisted some of the best in the industry with clients like IBM, SUN, ABB, BMW, NASA, and RollsRoyce. The Firefly has been certified or complies with IEC, CE, CA, FDA/CDRH, RoHS, WEEE, FCC, and the product registered US GS1 point-of-sale ready.
Firefly uses a stainless steel mold for 100% recyclable plastic body with durable integrated texturing for no annoying scratching. The design development was inspired by the smooth filleted edges with a semi-neutral form found in today’s elegant products and devices. All laser parts are casted metal; optics are glass; with industrial quality laser diode from Germany. The final product is imported to Michigan USA at eFulfillment Service (EFS) warehouse to provide complete order fulfillment service and ecommerce integration.
All of this to deliver Firefly in its truly greatest form. When you hold Firefly you'll feel the love and dedication that as gone into creating this beautifully engineered and innovative device.

Risks and challenges
The Firefly will be the first truly blue laser lamp. In the past many laser products have come and gone, boasting the beauty of a true blue laser light. Unfortunately due to so many limitations on technology and budgets, these lasers were actually closer to purple, violet, indigo, etc. but never a true blue laser at an affordable price.
We are confident that the sustainable design and manufacturing methods used to create Firefly will not only produce a great product, but a truly blue laser that can be shared with everyone. It will undoubtedly be a difficult task to make all the pieces finally come together, but we have done our homework and are ready for any pitfalls that may arise.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Please do not forget to add shipping cost as I see many uses of the $49 pledge and no $5 shipping cost.
The product takes four AAA batteries and you can run it on two. Four will give you 5 hours of life and we intended for that as it is perfect for a wedding party to use on a table center piece with flowers. These are cheap Alkaline batteries (dollar store) but we recommend Duracell or Energizer so you have no leaks. Lithium may get you 7 hours. Of course you have your AC/DC adapter that comes with it at high efficiency.
The laser is no more dangerous than an LED light if a normal distance is maintained. I would not advise anyone to hold even the smallest light directly to their eye.
Maintaining a 2 foot distance between your eyes and the laser is advised. My children sleep with this lamp in their room and have no problems.
Rating of laser:
The laser is below 4.98mw output as a result of the optics. We like to keep it well below that like 3mw. It is a class 3R laser at 450nm. CDRH/FDA specification at 70mm from aperture so essentially you have to place your face very close to the laser lamp. I have glasses and I am safe at distance 2 feet. You can get just as blinded by LED flashlights today (even more) and now they carry warnings.
It can be used by people in the vicinity with glasses. Safe for cats.
This is a real true blue laser not the purple stuff they call blue that uses a backlight output that
is confusing your vision.
With any laser do not and even with 2M place close to your eye for example 70mm.
Yes unfortunately the international shipping of a laser product requires special documentation to remain within the law and these documents are necessary for each unit.
US and Canada are the same shipping costs, Canada does not apply to international shipping cost. Unfortunately I cannot change the text of the Pledges to indicate US and Canada that have been created already. Rest assure if your from Canada your not going to be charged the International fee, it is not applicable.
The international shipping expense is not due to weight; which is really negligible. The shipping expense is incurred due to international export documents for lasers of this rating 2. Each unit is required to have these documents prepared to remain within the law and unfortunately this expense must be passed on to the backer receiving the shipment.
Testing was done running the product 24/7:
MTTF which is essentially the laser slowly dims and that is 7000hrs, though we have actually gotten that running it 24/7 which is very hard running. This is a long time being that incandescent bulbs last 900 and Fluorescents have proven to not be 5000 but less than 1000. LEDs state 10s of thousands of hours but the driving units for them fail much earlier and these are computed values and they are not run 24/7; so take that with a grain of salt. I am a perfectionist and expect quality with anything I do. Added from comments area:
The laser is designed to work for 5000hrs or more no less. An incandescent bulb lasts 900 and is written on the product, compact fluorescent bulb (CFL) certification standard of 10,000 hours, or 3,333 uses - is based on the standard of 3 hours per use! I have never gotten anything close to that more like 1000hrs using it 8 hours a day. I have given up on using CFLs and gone back to incandescent. The blue laser is based on 24/7 usage for 5000 hours so your pretty good. We have actually tested this not computed it in the Firefly shell environment. So if we used the 3 hours per day standard which in my opinion is low it would last 4.5 years. Note claims are stated for LED are very high but the driving circuit fails much earlier though the statement is true for life of the LED but how useful is that if you cannot turn it on. I will put this in the FAQ.
Our development included creating a custom-made solid-state multi-voltage adapter which has been certified CE. The adapter is marked CE and UL. The adapter is in conformity with EC directive 2006/95/EC low voltage directive for rating 100-240V~, 50/60Hz, 0.1A. The AC/DC adapter plug is a 2-wire NEMA 1-15 plug. The adapter can accept 100-240V and is auto-sensing. For typical Euro use you will need a plug adapter not a converter for it to fit in the socket. See the photo below displaying adapter with and without plug converters.
The Firefly is a lamp. The import TARIC is 8513 10 00 00. The HTS is 85131040. The HTS description is Portable electronic lamps design to function by their own source of energy, other than flashlights and the import tax is 3%. Yes is can be imported to Australia, its a lamp.
Our product has a mechanism to prevent reaching such heights and therefore not capable of interfering with aircraft. It is a lamp and you are pointing a LED flashlight to an aircraft. If you were at a local airfield beyond the fence you be viewed as a flashlight. All these conditions have been taken into consideration for the two year research into this technology.
Making any consumer electronic requires a lot of testing and certif
ication to comply with local (California e.g.) and government regulations for sale and to import internationally. Making a laser for resale is even more
difficult. Just having a yellow sticker for a laser product is not a standard but more or less a fake standard that that specific Government and consu
mer guidelines have been followed and the needed investment has been made. The standards for manufacturing and selling a laser are very particular. If th
at commonly seen yellow sticker can peel off you are guaranteed it does not have the standards as it is a requirement to even make it next to impossible
to remove the label notice. Essentially we have invested a lot into expensive laser equipment for R&D and ensure compliance with standards and regula
tions. Believe me your DVD player that uses a very weak laser has many government requirements. The Firefly laser lamp complies with guidelines on con
ditions under which laser product manufacturers may be introduced into United States commerce for laser products that comply with the IEC standards 60825
-1, as amended, and 60601-2-22. The operation of the Firefly laser lamp laser is well within IEC 60825 international define power and wavelength for cons
umer use. The potential laser output has been independently tested as well as by Parhelion over long periods of operation. The regulation of Laser prod
ucts in the United States falls with the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) under the Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) responsible for re
gulating radiation emitting electronic products. The CDRH goal is to protect the public from hazardous and unnecessary exposure to radiation from electro
nic products. For most electronic products, safety regulation is divided between CDRH and state regulatory agencies. CDRH regulates the manufacture of th
e products, and the states regulate the use of the products. The manufacturing of Firefly LDH provides for inspection procedures during assembly process
at each phase of manufacturing for quality control and FDA compliance. The manufacturing process meets the terms of medical Good Manufacturing Practice (
GMP) for batch control, a high ISO standard or similar quality assurance program for certification testing. The Firefly LDH is manufactured by Titoma, a
well respected Western managed service for producing popular electronic devices and are meeting high standards of GMP batch control. You will find most c
ompanies producing pointer and entertainment lasers do not achieve this level of standard. Firefly LDH is in compliance with US Laser Notice No. 50 per
formance standards and reporting. The publication by the FDA/CDRH provides guidance on conditions under which laser product manufacturers may introduce i
nto United States commerce laser products that comply with the IEC International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards 60825-1, as amended, and 606
01-2-22. The IEC is a World organization that prepares and publishes International Standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies ? co
llectively known as "electrotechnology". We have engaged Bureau Veritas Consumer Product Services, Inc. (BVCPS) to identify applicable consumer compliance requirements for the
Firefly LDH product. Bureau Veritas have provided design evaluation to identify applicable United States toy regulations and Code of Federal Regulations
(CFR) as well as appropriate age grading. Parhelion has insured that LDH complies with CFR titles for Federal Trade Commission, United States Customs Se
rvice, Department of Health and Human Services, and Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The Firefly LDH meets US Regulations for Labeling Requirem
ent for Toy and Game Advertisements, Labeling Country of Origin, Fair Packing and Labeling (FPLA), Flammability Requirements, Acute Oral Toxicity, Skin I
rritation, and Eye Irritation requirements for consumer safety and fair practices. The Firefly laser lamp has been tested and assured compliance with all government regulatory requirements for import in the United States and Europe. During design and before a product is released for manufacturing Parhelion has engaged an independent laser compliance consulting firm which provides testing, product certification, reporting, engineering design review, inspection of safety labeling, user manual and notice, and compliance with import-export requirements. Further compliance testing and recording are performed during the manufacturing process far beyond FDA requirements.
Parhelion is my company and we have been researching the feasibility of a blue laser for two+ years. Firefly has taught us a lot but is not the final end game. It has always been intended as a proof of concept for what we saw as the potential for blue lasers to fundamentally change the lighting industry. The blue laser is far more significant than just merely the color. We have a patent on our blue laser diode component design itself, aside from the Firefly shell. It is completely different than the green component. The Firefly shell is a convenient way for us to produce a giveaway for contributors. But its the BLUE LASER that's the most compelling component for several reasons. First, technologically it is constructed using stable state technology unlike the green which uses a crystal diode. Crystal diode is fine for normal environments, but the stable state is shatter proof and with our patent-pending heat spreader the blue stable state laser can withstand up to 150 farenheit. Couple that with the special calibration we use for the blue that allows it to reveal objects in a smoky room and we have what we believe can be a very compelling unit for a broader array of future uses - emergency lighting being one. You could say what we are giving away is a blue Firefly of sorts, but the intent is be able to further the blue laser technology that has some really powerful potential to change the lighting industry. The photographs for the blue laser are not retouched. They are original blue laser photos. They just happened to be in the same settings as the ones we took awhile ago for the green. All that said, we hope this will increase the confidence that the giveaway you'll receive is a real lamp that has all its legal, safety, UL, CE, Rohs, FDA/CDRH, and independent laser compliance officially approved. And, with blue lasers pointers today fetching around $200 in the marketplace, even at the higher levels on our campaign we hope you'll see this isn't such a bad deal! I cannot place links but if you look a Frontgate and search for lighting use sort $400 to $599 you will see a green and blue laser light for 550 in change something like that. the picture they have is green for the product so click on it. You are getting a great price for a proprietary laser that we make ourselves. We will have updates of more information and some unique aspects of this product that people will find exciting.
By setting the shutter of a camera to a very exaggerated amount of time you can capture the path of laser light as someone moves firefly through the air. In this case they gestured each letter using the lamp.
This technique is popular in photography and is often referred to as "Painting with light".
The long exposure time allows you to see the laser light travel through space and time in a single image, its a very exciting way to use the firefly laser lamp.
