About this project
The Gentle Giant's Quintet: Here's to Life
For fifteen years the GGQ has played in and around Chicagoland entertaining people in all types of venues. It's time to record an album and take the band to a new level! The album will be a collection of classic Jazz Standards and Bossa Nova/Latin songs. There will even be a little Persian surprise at the end of the CD.
The artists performing are:
Ramin Khamsei – Vocalist
Jason Steele – Guitar
James Davis – Trumpet and Flugelhorn
Patrick Mulcahy – Bass
Quin Kirchner – Drums
We will also have a few well known Chicagoan guest artists on a few of the songs.
If you like Frank Sinatra and singers of his time and genre, you're going to love us. We will swing and serenade you. We'll salsa and sway you. We just need the opportunity to do it. With your contribution, we can make a fifteen song album with some of the best songs we know. You'll feel transported back to the 50's and 60's with a little modern twist. This album will allow us to get reviewed, potentially played on the radio and help fund the next album.
Ramin, whose parents came from Iran back in 1968, was born in Chicago, and raised in Skokie, IL. He has been singing or playing an instrument almost his entire life. Music has always been second nature to him and he credits his mom, and his first band director, Donald Stahlberg, for his love of Jazz. He attended music school at both Roosevelt University: Chicago Musical Conservatory, where he started The GGQ.and South Western Community College: School for Music Vocation in Creston, Iowa. He stands at 6'10" tall and is usually the biggest person in the room. Hence the name of the group.
The band has been playing together since 1997. Although the band's staple is the songbook's of crooners from Frank Sinatra to Harry Connick Jr., they do a wide variety of Jazz Standards, Bossa Nova and Blues as well as rearranged Rock, Pop, Latin and Persian tunes. Being a purist, Ramin sings most foreign language songs in the original language.
Ramin's dream is to be able to play and teach music for a living. No grand desires to become famous, but simply to serve the music and share it with all of you.
