A smart, charming, sassy, story of a beautiful quirky princess who would rather hide in her tower and do math, than marry her prince.
So, we officially made our goal of $7,000 in funding, WooHoo! Huge Thanks to all our Backers!!!
To Celebrate, thank our contributors, and maybe entice a few new ones to join the club, we have added three more minutes of the film's Animatic, for your viewing pleasure!
With 5 days left to go, we are going to keep pushing to surpass our goal as much as possible. So if you only contribute to a sure thing, jump on this bandwagon, because this film is definitely happening!
NEW GOAL! To raise $3,000 in 5 days to put us over 10K!
Here are the first six minutes of our animatic (animation storyboard)
Rapunzel's Etymology of Zero is a comedic retelling of the Rapunzel fairytale that features Rapunzel, as a brainy, math-loving princess, with a "super power" to control the growth of her hair. To keep from marrying the Prince who loves her, she makes up a story about an evil step mother, locks herself in a tower, and proceeds to make great discoveries in the field of mathematics, while outside her window the Prince climbs.
She's the type of princess you don't see very often on film. The brilliant geek, you can't help but fall in love with. The girl in the tower next door, with a penchant for numbers and a razor sharp wit.
It turns out: Math + Feminism + Fairytale = Hilarious. Who knew?
This project started out as a staged play, featured in the Best of Playground Festival in San Francisco in May of 2011, and subsequently produced in Chicago and all the way over in Sydney, Australia. When we were given the opportunity to adapt the play to film, we jumped at the chance, and assembled a team of terrifically talented animators to bring this story to life on the screen.
Fueled by amazing creative talent, a whole lot of love, a small seed grant from San Francisco PlayGround, and a huge investment of time and our own money, we've generated beautiful character design, a sassy sequence of storyboards, an original score, and a professional voice recording featuring voice work by some the of the bay area's best vocal talent. We've constructed a fantastic animatic that showcases the quirky brilliance of Rapunzel and the world she inhabits.
We love it. We think everyone that sees it will love it too. That's where you come in.
Animation is a journey. So far the ride has a been a mind-blowing, caffeine fueled coaster of fantastic design and hilarious storytelling, and we'd love for you to strap yourself in and join us for the next step. Your donation will bring color to Rapunzel's world, construct the frames that will fully animate each sequence, add an original sound scape, and unleash Rapunzel's love of math to film festivals, and audiences around the globe.
But we'd really like to start with your living room.
Thanks so much from the entire Rapunzel Team!

About 13 minutes.
It seems that this film has a few mature jokes. Do you have something I can show my elementery scool ages students without the word "horny" in it?
Sure! we want everyone to see this film, so if you want an edited version, just let us know, and we will make sure you get the mild version, instead of the picante :-)
Sure! We are happy to do a digital downland, instead of a DVD if you prefer, especially for those of you who live outside the US. Just let us know when you donate.
