About Backstage at The Lost Colony

Much has been written about The Lost Colony outdoor drama and the historical event that inspired it, but Backstage at The Lost Colony is the first book to go behind the scenes to offer a view of the show the audience never sees—the grinding toil, the artistic vision, the occasional mishaps, the moments of mischief and glimpses of grace. With the relaunch of our Kickstarter campaign, we have revised our offering from a paperback book to a hardcover limited edition--a true collector's item you'll be proud to display.

The book is more than 170 pages, with more than 100 photos, mostly color, by photographers such as Delena Gray Ostrander, Eden Saunders, Duane Cochran, and Jamil Zraikat. The core narrative, by former cast member Dwayne Walls, follows the cast and crew through The Lost Colony's 80th anniversary season. His observations are supplemented by first-person stories from Colony alumni.

About The Lost Colony outdoor drama

For eight decades, The Lost Colony has defied the odds. From its improbable founding during the Great Depression, through flood and fires, playwright Paul Green’s first and most famous symphonic outdoor drama is a study in resilience. And like the "lost" colonists of Roanoke Island, the people who created and sustained The Lost Colony—and who continue to preserve its legacy—are a study in passion and determination.

Our fondest wish is that you will support our passion project AND take in a performance of The Lost Colony during its 81st season.

About the Author

The son of a journalist, Dwayne Walls Jr. is uniquely suited to tell the Backstage story. He first signed on with The Lost Colony as a 19 year-old actor technician—a hapless “space puppy” who was too preoccupied with the itch of his colonist’s beard and the paucity of his paycheck to enjoy his first summer with the show. But he returned a few years later with a different outlook and, even though his beard still itched, he grew both professionally and personally. Through his experience with The Lost Colony, Dwayne developed an enduring appreciation for the work and the workers behind the scenes, which is evident in the story he tells. After leaving The Lost Colony, Dwayne went on to New York City to build sets for theater, film, and television—including NBC’s Saturday Night Live. These days, he lives with his wife Elizabeth in Pittsboro, North Carolina, where he remains a member in good standing of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local One.

How We'll Use the Funds

We plan to use the funds we raise to help offset the cost of printing a hardbound limited edition. The costs of pre-press and printing and shipping is more than $15,000. We hope you will share in bringing our project to life!

Risks and challenges

We have been working on this book since early 2016, when we first posted a Facebook page announcing our intention to the Lost Colony community, which showed enthusiastic support right from the beginning (thank you!). The book has been written, edited, designed, and is currently in production. It will go to print in early March. It is being printed in the U.S.A.

We're on schedule to have copies in hand for The Lost Colony's 2018 Opening Night (May 25). We are far enough along in the process to feel confident in our schedule.
