The story was inspired by a love of exploration, fantasy, children’s illustration and reptile companions! It is geared for young readers, aged 5-8, with engaging artwork and easy to read text, though it can be enjoyed by all who appreciate a cheerful story!
One major goal of the book is to be donated to local schools and libraries, to show that their world is beautiful and to get out and explore it! The book will be self published, but will get the necessary accreditation, ISBN number, etc to be used everywhere else.
We all know the best part of a children's book is the vibrant illustrations! I want to bring that in full force, with a colorful world full of detail and life. The story takes place on a riverfront, after all! The artwork is created digitally, with a clean, focused style in mind.
The book itself would be the standard children's book page count of 32 pages, measuring 8.5 x 11 inches, and in full color. Each page is hand drawn and colored start to finish, with both kids and adults alike keeping an eye out for small details between each illustration. There will also be a digital version in PDF format.
Nice to meet you! I’m Geneva B, a North Carolina mountains based illustrator, and I love bringing smiles to people's faces! I started drawing seriously at 18, and am currently running a successful business as a self employed artist. Now, writing is a new venture I would like to pursue in combination with art, particularly fantastical books for children. Allie & Gator is the first of these ventures, and hopefully one of the most memorable. Growing up, I did not have the chance to read many stories about diverse protagonists whom I could relate to, or even animal sidekicks that weren’t the usual dog or cat! I hope to fill that gap a little, and open up new possibilities for kids wanting to create their own worlds and stories. You can find more of my work on my Portfolio or Instagram.
Writing and drawing is hard work! Quite fun, but still time consuming. Finishing the artwork at a steady pace would require a few months' time, along with any editing and corrections for printing that need to take place afterwards. I am placing approximate completion of art in late Spring/early Summer 2018. If all goes to schedule (with a little wiggle room), the book will be ready to ship and in your hands in September 2018. In the meantime, I’ll be eagerly updating backers with frequent progress updates and behind the scenes shots!
Allie & Gator thus far has been a labor of love! I realize $8,000 is quite a hefty goal, but the campaign funds are going directly to getting the book printed (1,500+ copies) and backer rewards created and shipped out. None of the actual funds will be going towards a drawing rate for myself; I simply just want to see this born as a real book and in people’s hands!
Ultimately, I would love the book to be hardcover, but the costs for hardcover are quite high, so the campaign’s initial funding goal is for a soft cover, perfect bound option, and hardcover becoming a stretch goal. As for the backer rewards, I plan to use a myriad of trusted companies whom I personally tested myself or have heard nothing but good things about (PrintNinja, Smartpress and PureButtons, to name a few!)
And here's what we all scroll down for: Backer Rewards! Every tier includes backer-only updates and behind the scenes, which will begin after the campaign. I tend to update quite frequently, as seen in this previous campaign.
Feel free to message me if you have any comments, questions or suggestions!
That's a lot of tiers! But, it's a lot of things I want to give! I wanted to make what you want as customizeable as possible, to fit every price point. I fully appreciate every tier you choose to support and will fulfill it with haste and pride!
I have a few extra ideas in store if this campaign does even better than expected:
Thank you for reading and being a part of making this a possibility! As always, please let me know if there are any questions :)
PS: In this story, alligators are harmless, dog-like pets. Real life alligators are very cool, but please have your child not try to befriend them!
Risks and challenges
The manuscript and 1/3 of art is complete! Getting this book to completion is one of main focuses at the moment, so I am ready and willing to take as many hours as I can to see it come true. The only things that need to be completed are the remaining art, printing and backer rewards. Though I have previous work experience in commercial children's books, this is my first go at self publishing from scratch and will work to avoid as many pitfalls as possible. However, I have previous experience running a successfully backed book-based Kickstarter campaign in 2017 (Tournesol Artbook), which was handled in a speedy and efficient manner.
The biggest unforeseen challenges would be printing of the book itself, having to ship so many books and any delays that could potentially come with it. I pledge to keep backers as updated as possible if there would be any hiccups in the process.
