Poet Kelsey Erin Shipman's first studio album is ripe with emotional intensity and the Jazz/Funk stylings of local Austin musicians.

Kelsey Erin Shipman's Debut Studio Album

I've written the poems. Found kickass musicians. Rehearsed. Rehearsed. Rehearsed. Paid for studio time. Recorded. Paid for more studio time. Recorded again.

You've filled the chairs at my gigs in New York City. Los Angeles. Dallas. Austin. Berlin. Prague. And all the little towns in between. You've bought my books. Paid cover fees. Made me believe in the power of art over and over again. And now, I have one last request of you.

I've spent a year and a half pinching pennies to make this album happen, and now, I need you! I've already paid for all the studio time and mixing, but still need a few more dollars to master the album (make it sound good on your iPod) and print up the actual CDs (so you have it in your hands).

Here's what we need:

$1200 for mastering

$1300 for printing

$500 for all those damn hidden fees

$500 for a kickass, once-in-a-lifetime CD Release Party

**Any extra funds will be used to fly our drummer and vocalist down from the East Coast to rock out our first few shows, including the CD release party!**

What You Are In For

Suckerpunch poetry. Funky sax. Bluesy keys. Badass cajon. Jazzy trap set. Breathtaking vocals. I'm lucky to be recording with some of my best friends. Andrew McLemore has been playing tenor and baritone sax for a decade, and wrote all the music for this album. His best friend, Nick Mitchell, is an award-winning Pipe Band drummer and will make your ass shake on every track. And Brittany Bara, my best friend from high school, takes the album to a whole new level with her earth-shaking choruses and background vocals. Kris Wade has also joined us for some incredible upright and electric base. And, all of this was recorded right here in Austin, Texas at Jackrabbit Sound Shack.

Oh, and me? I've been writing and performing poetry for close to a decade. Mostly because I love it. Also because I've  seen it change the lives of  everyone it touches: Low-income middle-schoolers. Senior citizens. Busy moms. Fried graduate students. Anyone who's experienced loss, disappointment, or found themselves in need of healing. I've been performing my poetry for so long because it comes alive on the stage in ways it just can't in a book.

This album is about love and longing, fear and defiance, sex and drugs, and of course, redemption. It is not only a catalog of my life in this crazy, crazy world, but a celebration of all the ways we triumph over adversity.

Your support will not only get you all the goodies listed, but garner you my profound gratitude and belief in the power of art.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

There's a lot of coordination going into this project (money, other people's schedules, well, other people's money too, etc) and it has taken a lot of time and energy to manage it all. I think we've done well over the last year and a half, and there's no way I am caving in now! There is a potential that the CD release date and CD release party may not happen exactly when or how I'd like it too, but I have total confidence that we can work it out. I am, and have been, completely committed to this project, and you better believe I am not stopping now.
