Grifter : A Game of Cons
A light strategy card game of set building and bluffing for the con artist in us all.
- 2 - 4 Players
- 20 - 30 Minutes
- 13+ (Old Timey jargon and allusions)
Gameplay – Overview :
In Grifter players each receive a Grifter card with a special Griftin’ ability then shuffle the deck to form a Con deck shared by all the con artists playing. [www.gameofcons.com]
Players compete to be the first to form a Monte of three cards: a Mark, Business and Opportunity. Using Trick cards, Shill cards and these Monte cards must curtail and maneuver their way to victory. You pay for cards by either discarding from your hand or from your Plot pool—a hidden store of cards you build up over time some of which must be attached unrevealed to your Monte. Based on which cards you pay, which you play and which you attach you are going to have to Bluff or strategize to prevent your opponents from pulling off the better score before you do!
You can mosey on over to check out the rule-set here.
Easy and portable – Grifter was designed to fit snugly in your pocket and have the look and feel of a typical poker deck. The entire game comes in a 54-card tuck-box with everything you need to play. Its light mechanics, two-player minimum and fast game-play makes it a great in-between game and also a great intro game to that non-gamer in your life you’ve been looking to con into becoming a Gamer!
Grifter: A Game of Cons comes in an easy carry tuck-box along with a single two-sided instruction sheet and 54-cards: 4xGrifter cards, 5xTrue cards, 5xMark cards, 7xBusiness cards, 7xOpportunity cards and 24xTrick cards and 2xShill cards. The cards are high-quality 100% plastic designed to feel like your typical poker cards and made to last.
Each player gets a single Grifter card at the beginning of the game and any remain cards, including the left-over Grifters get shuffled to form a single Con deck. The entire ‘play-area’ consists of the shared Con deck, a shared discard deck and players’ individual card hands (composed of cards waiting to be played), Plot pool area (composed of hidden cards used to pay or attach to cards) and Scam area (composed of the Monte cards needed to win the game).
The Purpose – The purpose of this project is to get a copy of Grifter: A Game of Cons out into the world so folks can get a slice of the Old-West shuffled in with a nice helping of skullduggery and subterfuge.
The Goal – The goal is to raise funds to see the game produced with quality and in volume so you can try to outwit your friends, colleagues and random passerbyers at your next Con-vention!
The Rationale – Simple- the game has been created, fully envisioned and play-tested throughout. It’s been a wild ride seeing this game go from idea to development and the last step, getting it out into the world at large is all that’s needed. All the artwork has been completed for the base game and looks fantastic:
The expansion and variant version of Grifter artwork has been started and will be completed upon successful funding levels reached. Several artists were used to produce a quality set of unique images and only stretch goals and reward levels are left. The turnaround and experience with the artists on the project has been consistent and well-done.
The artwork was also done with a very inclusive and broad focus in mind, ensuring that representations of individuals from various backgrounds and appearances were included. One of the chief design goals was to make sure the game had a uniquely broad appeal to Gamers of all stripes when it came to how the game looked and from a design standpoint who helped create the project itself.
Production times and shipping costs have been calculated for US shipping to ensure quick-turnaround.
Projected Fulfillment Date – September 2015.
Grifter:Getaways Expansion & Grifter: Age of Steam Variant
Should the project reach the reward levels for the Getaways Expansion and Age of Steam Variant we would like backers to name 2 of the Grifters and one of the Shill’s used in each set. Based around historical figures and backgrounds we will provide backers with some suggestions before the completion of these two additional sets and following the Kickstarter funding period.
"I enjoyed my time with Grifter: A Game of Cons. The game is easy to teach and has a theme that connects well to the mechanics. For a game that only is a collection of cards, it has a lot of replay value because of the different card abilities make each game feel unique. There is more strategy to Grifter: A Game of Cons then you would think on the surface."

"This is alot of fun! I love the art!" - Sheep's Meow Gamer . 1/15/15
“Fast and devious fun” – (Tom Tiernan, DexCon Reviewer) - Indie Game Designer- 7/11/14
“I like it!” – (Double Exposure DexCon Reviewer) - 7/11/14
“I can’t put my finger on it but there’s something…” (Origins Convention Reviewer) - June 2014
For all reward levels, shipping anywhere within the United States is included. For international shipping, the cost of shipping is noted in the rewards to the right. Ideally excess shipping costs will (and may) be refunded to backers, but that is not part of the project goal itself--just a lofty goal of the creator.

Grifter is largely complete. So the reward levels for the project are devoted towards the Expansion: Getaways and Age of Steam variant version of the game. These are goals that would move the project beyond the base set.
The first two stretch goals add three Kickstarter unique cards to the base game bringing more artwork and play-options to the game-- they are simple add-ons revving up towards the Expansion goals.
$11,000 - Stretch Goal -
1 – Extra Trick - A simple goal of adding another card to the base to spice up the game with a little randomness. One small notch on the road towards the expansion and alternative variant of the game.
$ 12,000 - Stretch Goal -
- 1 – Extra Mark
- 1 – Extra Grifter
Two more cards added to the base game-- incorporating some variant folks from the era. Adding a mystic and European bent to the Old West, still in keeping with the theme and atmosphere. The additions add some differences to game play that can really change things up a bit.
$ 18,000 - Stretch Goal - Grifter: Getaways
The next big stretch goal is funding to produce the Expansion set: Grifter: Getaways. This includes an entire 54-card set that is added to the first game and will come with additional Grifters, Businesses, Opportunities, Marks, Shills and new cards called Getaways and Confoundments.
These two cards offer new mechanics to the game where players can end the game provided they have a Monte set on an opponent’s turn and will include artwork devoted around travel in the Old West like stage-coaches, the railroad and horses for the Getaway cards and factions like the Pinkertons, Sheriffs and rival Grifter gangs as the Confoundments. The artwork for this expansion has been started and upon successful funding of this stretch goal backers at the GRIFTER level will automatically receive a copy of the expansion. Players will need the base Grifter: A Game of Cons in order to play with this expansion.
$ 27,000 - Stretch Goal - Grifter: Age of Steam
The final stretch goal is the variant version of the game: Grifter: Age of Steam. This includes the entire base set redone with Steampunk imagery instead of the Old Western motif. The artwork for this version has been started and upon this stretch goal backers at the MASTER SHILL level will automatically receive a copy of this version of the game. The artwork for this version is in keeping with a steam-punk feel and will be in full color and completely different from the base set however the rules will remain the same as well as the game itself: Only the artwork will change. This version will offer an exciting and alternative version of the base game and even more inclusive and outlandish artwork will be available for play.
This project has been the culmination of over a year’s worth of work and testing. Through friends, family, conventions and causal gamers the project has been brought from concept to design phase and is now finally moving into production and I am truly proud of the final product that has resulted. This project is another way that as the project lead I am able to give back to the Gaming community and produce a game that fulfills a niche that I wanted to develop for a long time. Unlike typical scoring, point-system or attack games, Grifter was designed so that the game truly feels like it’s not over until it’s over, and any player can win no matter how far ‘behind’ or despite their card draws. The game couldn’t have been brought this far however without the help of all those involved, including:

I’ve been a table-top gamer for only a few short years but in that time I’ve managed to have a great deal of fun with all manners of gamers in my home town of New York City. I have written community content for Wizards of the Coast Living Forgotten Realms campaign, run a few seminars at a local gaming conventions and run an inclusive Gaming group in the Big Apple devoted towards expanding the gaming hobby across genres and backgrounds. I also blog occasionally and can be somewhat opinionated. This is the first gaming project of this scale I’ve undertaken but thanks to the help of friends, family and play-testers and plenty of research I feel confident backers will enjoy this unique and quirky little card game.

I very much enjoyed having the opportunity to explore a theme as unique as con artists from the 1800's. It was very rewarding, to say the least, to be able to work on a long term project which required me to plunge head first into an entirely separate era where speech was different. Style was different. Mentality was different. I, like most people I'm sure, have always wished that I could time travel. This will always be an incredibly memorable project for me because for the first time - there were points where I felt as if I was legitimately traveling back in time. The only aspect I'll ever regret about working on this game - is that the process had to come to an end. Although, I suppose all good things must at some point. Right?

“Working on the card illustrations was fun and challenging at the same time. It has a specific look and feel which was not easy to achieve to be honest. But it was unique and interesting to work with. They were very cool to look at once I’ve finished them. I had a great time doing this project and I look forward seeing the actual products.”
Risks and challenges
This is the first Kickstarter project I’ve undertaken. As such I’ve researched quality specs and shipping costs and times. The artwork was fully finalized and completed prior to this Kickstarter campaign so as to ensure that the base funding level is good to go from the moment the project is backed.
The card quality is top-notch: traditional wisdom vise-a-vie Kickstarter games is to go with lesser card stock but I wanted quality first and foremost for the final product. The reward levels and stretch goals are simple and straightforward – the focus of this campaign is getting the base set funded and out into the world.
The game itself has been thoroughly play-tested, going from simple concept to rock-solid gameplay that has the right balance of card counts, abilities and timing. It was an amazing experience and so much about the process was learned along the way at conventions, meetups and through friendships and acquaintances.
I’ve run gaming groups in the Metro area for a number of years and have a great deal of experience in organizing and delivering an enjoyable and consistent gaming experience and this project is an extension of my passion and love for the hobby. I really hope to bring the community something truly unique and different!
As for the project funding levels-- these amount to roughly 65% production costs, 15% shipping, 10% Amazon and Kickstarter fees and 5% taxes and a 'cushion' for unforseen items. For the Stretch goal levels each adds to these rough amounts but also factors in artwork and design cost commiserate to the level of funding and output at the individual levels.
