Finding and shooting photos from the urban environment and painting abstracts from these images. Read more
The Urban Abstract Experience is the result of finding urban abstracts... thath's anything in the environment that doesn't belong that can be washed away by the elements, scrubbed away, painted over, destroyed or replaced. Unfortunately, many of these images will be removed before they are saved.
I want you to share my enthusiasm for these abstracts and experience them as interesting and meaningful pieces of art.
Keep these abstracts alive! If the total amount of my budget is not reached, the project will not be funded at all.
I have been shooting photos of urban abstracts for over a year, and have collected over one-hundred photos. Sidewalk drawings, building graffiti, decomposing posters, fading signs, tagged doorways, and crumbling buildings all capture my attention. There are days I drive around with my camera looking for these abstracts. Can you imagine how difficult it is to go anywhere? On days I forget my camera, I almost always see an image I want to save.
My objective is to recreate these photo images as abstract paintings, non-objective or representational. To save them as paintings before they fade away. I will complete one painting a week for the duration of the project. I've already completed five.
I want you to appreciate these images as much as I do… not to dismiss them as defacements or trash… to call me before removing or restoration so I can take a photo. They might just become part of the project. I want you to appreciate the aesthetic value of these images. With any luck, others will latch onto this project and help it go nationwide.
Patronage and Funding
Needs include paint, wax, brushes, canvas/panel board, stretcher bars, paper, printing, prints, postcards, catalog/books, packing and shipping expenses, T-shirts, exhibition rental, installation materials, and reception expenses.
Oops! Almost forgot, I need to keep my relationship with my wife intact and not deplete the bank account. Pledges need to meet the budget goal; otherwise, the project dies and your pledge will be returned to you.
Please pledge, anything will help and of course, you will receive a nice gift for your faith in me and the project.
As I stated previously, I will complete one painting a week. I will be documenting the process with photos and posting updates on my blog, www.UrbanAbstractExperience.blogspot.com, to which you will have access.
Once these paintings are complete, I will produce frameable greeting cards and prints. Finally, I will print a coffee-table book with the original photo next to its abstract representation, and include so much more.
Urban Abstract Experience will culminate with an exhibit and artist’s reception, date and location to be announced. I look forward to meeting you and being able to thank you personally for your support. Tell your friends and family and bring them along.
