“My Year In California ~ a journey toward midlife renewal” is a full-color book with a pictorial essay featuring over 90 photographs and a personal travelogue. It is about adventure, freedom and liberation. It’s about challenge, struggle, conflict and the longing for transformation.
The question most people ask about the journey is “What cities did you live in?” I answer with a question. "What twelve cities would you choose?"
It’s always a mixed reaction—some people start listing cities right away, but others hesitate. “I could never do what you did,” is what they say. And they are right. It’s best that there aren’t too many people like me in the world. In order for our society to function, we need responsible adults to run the show, otherwise we would all be in perpetual adolescence.
Or would we be?
At midlife, we are called to examine our lives in a new way. In the first half of life we are preoccupied with establishing our identity—building and achieving. As we grow older and enter the second half of life, we set ourselves apart from who we once used to be and consider who we will become.
My book is about the passage way between the first half of life and the second half of life. I call this passageway “midlife renewal.”
In this new phase of life, we understand that our time on this Earth is more finite—that there is an end point. How will we spend the precious time we have left? It was my goal to answer that question.
