About this project
Wonderblox in the news!
Kids today are growing up different. Mind-blowing technologies are accessible from birth – computers, consoles, smartphones and tablets. These technologies and products open up amazing possibilities, yet they take up more and more of children’s playtime. Looking back at when we grew up, cars, dolls, action figures, board games, Lego’s and such were our playground.
This sparked an idea.
If we find a right way to combine digital experiences with real physical toys, we might create an experience that's totally new and has the best of both worlds. This is how Stui was born. And now, we’re launching our first product – Wonderblox.
Wonderblox = Blocks + Playset + App
Wonderblox is a digital game played with real toys. It re-imagines one of the first play patterns kids get their hands on – ABC blocks, and with the help of home-owned iPads, Wonderblox creates a whole new experience in play.
It's an iPad app and a set of blocks that uses the iPad screen as the play area. Wonderblox also comes with a play-set that has a simple mirror embedded into it, that helps the iPad's front-facing camera “observe” the play area, using a patent pending technology. It also stores the blocks after you play. Children choose and place the blocks on the screen, and the iPad sees letters, words, and even if they have stacked their blocks.
Age range – 3-6 years old
Wonderblox comes with the set of blocks, the play-set, and a downloadable app.
Requires iPad (not included), version 2 and up (every iPad with a front facing camera). iOS 6.0 and up. Does not support iPad Mini.
Once upon a woods - Spelling meets hide and seek. Find the animals by finding their names - Spelling game!
Icy Penguins - Can you help the penguins fish their supper? Crack the ice block by block, by finding letters - Matching game!
Cool Frog - This frog only likes shade (and flies...). Stack blocks and help him cross the pond! - Stacking game!
For non-english speakers as well!
We've created Wonderblox to help kids explore early english - for all our international backers, this is an opportunity to help your kids gain confidence and explore English in a playful way.
Wonderblox uses a simple mirror placed above the iPad
which directs the front facing camera towards the screen and surroundings
and detects the play pieces in real time
Our technology is what actually detects the playing pieces. By using various methods of computer vision and image processing. In other words - we have out-of-the-box developers that created a sophisticated technology that uses the front camera of the device. This gives us an awesome playtime experience.
Wonderblox detects and locates the playing pieces in real-time, allowing a fluid and seamless interaction between the pieces and the iPad. It knows which letter is placed and where at all times. The app's spelling and letter recognition mechanism can be used in numerous ways to expand game possibilities. We use this mechanism in the games 'Into the Wood' and 'Freeze Me!'
We are also working on a stacking mechanism, which allows for even more gameplay possibilities - as seen in the game 'Crazy Frog'.
The Wonderblox playset design is inspired by classic childhood toys, the playtime activities from books and boardgames. We've made a half dozen prototypes, testing all kinds of mechanisms, storage spaces and visual features. We finally felt that we had a version that is beautiful and fun, simple to set up and sturdy.
The blocks design is inspired by classic ABC letter blocks. The blocks are made from high-grade wood. Completely sanded so they won't scratch your kids, and they won't scratch the screen. We are planning to improve the prototype blocks design - here, take a look:
Stui started out back in college, where we fell in love with the idea of getting kids playing with real stuff, while creating cool and fun and novel interactions. We created a prototype which consisted of a game projected on the floor, where you solve puzzles with real wooden blocks. We recieved amazing feedback from kids, parents, game designers, investors, artists, psychologists and more. We felt we were on to something.
After playing around with a bunch of concepts, variations and product ideas, we decided that building a toy that interacted with a home-owned tablet can open up endless possibilities of play and innovative experiences. The course to build Wonderblox was plotted. This was about a year and a half ago. Since then, we've invested all our savings, signed on some amazing partners, and created the game experiences, the technology, the toys, the design, and eaten a bunch of Ramen noodles.
We've alreday partnered with a manufacturer, that has over 125 years of experience (!) specializing in cardboard products. All the parts are kid-safe and the paint is non-toxic.
The Stui team was founded with one thing in mind - creating fun and magical experiences for kids. We have years of experience in our respective fields - from toy creation and design, through user experience, game design, game development, computer vision and children's technology research, to manufacturing processes and sustainable materials. We love toys and games, and are very passionate about what we do.

We have been doing all we can by ourselves, but it's time to take a leap forward - manufacturing the first batch. The thing is - the minimum amount is 1,000 pieces for a mass produced version of Wonderblox + factory setup costs.
This is where you come in...
If a 1,000 people or more make a pledge in this campaign, we will have enough resources to setup the production line, make the first 1,000 products, finish creating graphics & sound, and have the resources to complete the job with our external partners, who are doing an amazing job in making Wonderblox a reality.
You make all the difference.
Risks and challenges
Creating a product with everything around it is hard. We need to coordinate the factory, the industrial designers, the graphic designers and part costs.
For this we have partnered with an outstanding party in every side of the project - David, our toy designer has over 25 years of experience in taking products from idea to market. He has personally set up numerous products for production. Hamutzim, our graphic design studio has more than 9 years in digital graphic design, as well as print design. Shuli, our technology researcher has more than a decade under her belt in exploring new interfaces. In every position we have top-notch motivated individuals.
We don’t claim to be invulnerable to delays in production, sourcing, shipping, or any other part of the journey from Kickstarter to your door. But, we have solid experienced people working with us that are capable of solving all the problems that might come our way.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
