About

Our Story

Amelia & Holly's was inspired by my daughter, Amelia (11), and our rescue dog, Holly (13). When we got Holly in 2008, we found she had sensitivities to meat-based dog treats. We didn't like what we found on the market, so Amelia and I made our own treats, on occasion, with a recipe I had from 1992. We don't use that recipe anymore, but the idea was to have more decision in what we gave to our dog for her treats.

In 2013, we spent two years testing out recipes on 7 families' and friends' dogs and received feedback via our online surveys. After tweaking the recipes, we opened our online store on National Dog Day, August 26, 2015. We took our first sale from Amelia's piano teacher.

Compassionate Commitment/Growth

Our logo design was created from a photo Amelia's dad took when Holly and Amelia first met in 2008. Amelia was just 2 1/2 and Holly almost 4. The photo captured the love, elation, and compassion Amelia felt for Holly, and influenced our business vision: Compassionately Crafted Canine Treats - our commitment to pups, peeps, and the planet. Part of our Compassionate Commitment includes giving back 10% of our profits to non-profit organizations.

We have grown to over 30 stores in 6 states and continue to grow our wholesale accounts. We work with our Wholesale Representative, Kate Jenson of CJ's Cottage, who has has helped us secure many of our wholesale accounts. Amelia's Aunt, Gretchen, also has come on board as our Brand Ambassador/Compassionate Crafter.

Part 1: Compassionate Campaign

We are licensed through the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, but in MN we can manufacture out of our home kitchen. It has sufficed until recently when we have grown considerably. Originally, we were going to focus on opening a canine cafe. Due to changes in our family's situation, we have put that dream on hold and will focus on scaling our business in more productive ways to our current needs.

Our home kitchen is too small to effectively process many orders at one time: there is no room for more than me and Amelia in the kitchen, and we have little room for packaging and shipping. As a result, with just me manufacturing our treats when Amelia is in school, our lead times are much longer than we want. We would like to tighten up all lead times for our wholesale, online, and consignment orders. Thus, we need a fully functional space that allows for others to assist with production and packaging, as needed, and helps us increase our quality control, too.

No US without U

While we are growing our wholesale accounts, we still need sufficient capital to move to the next level. We always have said, "There is no US without U all," and this could not be more true with our current campaign needs. We are focusing on a three-month period as fourth quarter is our biggest revenue quarter. Last year two-thirds of our business revenue came from that quarter. With being in 6 times as many stores now than from a year ago, we want to be fully prepared to address holiday and scaling needs.

Current Needs to Effectively Scale for 3 months:

1) 3-month commercial kitchen rental: 10 hours week minimum ($1,000)

2) 3-month inventory: flour, produce, herbs, compostable parchment paper, packaging for treats ($1,000)

3) 3-month wages for Brand Ambassador/Compassionate Crafter: ($1,500)

4) 3-month professional accounting services: ($1,200)

5) 3-month insurance coverage ($250)

6) 8-10% Kickstarter Fees: ($500)

Part II Campaign: Will be for our Compassionate Canine Cafe (in 1-3 years)

* Kickstarter is all or nothing: we need to meet our full goal to access funds.

* We have had to change our campaign course due to family circumstances, but we are deeply dedicated to our business and scaling.

*We feel changing the focus of our Kickstarter Campaign is more realistic at this time in our personal and professional lives, and reduces the amount of risks and challenges we could face.

* We made our rewards exciting, but also wanted to ensure we could get them out to our backers as soon as we can.
