£11,000 - An embroidered patch will be included in all physical rewards too (design to be confirmed)
£13,000 - Access to an extra digital download featuring 43 full page illustrations of sayings that didn't quite make it into the final book for one reason or another (some I wasn't happy with, others didn't fit the flow of the book, but they're all very good fun!)
£15,000 - An 48 page A5 notebook (unlined) will be added to all £35 bundles. I've not designed the cover yet, but it'll be something especially stylish to take notes in!
A World of Wisdom is an illustrated collection of sayings and expressions from around the world, comparing the ways different countries and cultures interpret the same ideas.
On a wet day, you might think "it's raining cats and dogs", but the rest of world has some different ideas on what's falling from the sky.
This book looks at equivalents to common ideas like "too many cooks spoil the broth" and getting stuck "between a rock and a hard place", as well as unique sayings about cats, beards, dancing, books, food, family, love and much much more. A pdf preview of the book itself is available here so you can see what it'll kind of look like!
With over 330 illustrated phrases from Vietnam to Venezuela, it's a one stop shop for all the phrases you might ever need!
It'll be printed as a hefty 216 page book, with full colour illustrations on every page and fun facts about where the phrases have come from. I've been working on it for about 2 years now and it's finally ready to be printed, I just need to raise some money to cover the initial costs - and that's where you come in!
Support the project and you can get the first copies made available, as well as all these rewards.
A World of Wisdom, the book!
The first copies of this book will go to you, the supporters, as a big thank you for helping to get it made, along with some other nice rewards planned for stretch goals. A PDF version is also available, with all the same content.
Postcards and Stickers
A set of prints perfect for sending or displaying, featuring three pattern designs from within the book.
As well as some vinyl stickers to stick wherever you fancy. They're as inspirational as a sticker can be.
A screenprinted tote bag with the Spanish phrase "the world is your canvas" to carry your shopping all over the world!
A 30mm hard enamel pin of the world! Perfect for any lapel, very stylish yes yes yes.
An extra pin badge is available too for pledges of £60 and over, inspired by the Chinese saying "a good book is a good friend"
When Frogs Grow Hair
When Frogs Grow Hair (an extra book!) is a comic book with a similar theme to A World of Wisdom, featuring 26 exciting international equivalents to the phrase "when pigs fly" to be used in unlikely situations (starring cats, fish, cows and unicorns). The perfect companion book!
There are 6 of my POSCA paintings up for grabs too. I never normally sell original work, so this is a special chance to get something one of a kind! (Roughly 7x5 inches in size)
I'll draw you and your family/friends (up to 4 of you in total) as a personal portrait, and send you the digital file as well as a print
I'll redraw a character in the book to be YOU! You (or someone of your choosing) can star in one of the phrases and be in all prints of the book. I'll get in touch to check what kinds of things you're a fan of so we can find the perfect phrase to embody.
The bulk of this money will go on the printing cost, with the rest going on some of the rewards and postage. I've fulfilled a successful Kickstarter before so I'm experienced at this budgeting process and I'm doing everything in my power to keep the costs down for you, the supporters.
I'm a freelance artist, living in Manchester, England. I ran a Kickstarter back in 2015 that went so well it helped fund the work on this book right here.
I've been illustrating this kind of thing for a long time, it's a real passion of mine. I'm obsessed with the way opposite corners of the world look at the same concepts, (phrases, sounds, film titles etc.) in completely unique ways, and it gives me a great opportunity to draw such fun illustrations. Risks and challenges
Through a Kickstarter a ran a few years ago, I distributed over 700 rewards and everything went very smoothly, so I've been through it all before. This time around I'm continuing to make every effort to keep any risk to the backers to an absolute minimum. The book is finished and ready to print and all the other rewards are all designed and ready to go into production as soon as the funding is fulfilled, so there's no risk there. I've not used this specific book printing service before but they come highly recommended from other self-published authors and can capably handle everything I've asked for, so I'm confident they can deliver.
All this preparation combined with a realistic target for shipping the final product means everything should be running like clockwork!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
