What is a nano suction pad?
Think of it as millions of microscopic suction cups made into a thin strip. It has a nano closed foam structure that suctions to flat surfaces in order to stick. It is not an adhesive tape; it uses a small vacuum to hold itself to other flat surfaces. It will stick to all clean glass, tiles, metal, varnished wood, most plastics and polished stones like marble. This patented material is new to the market. We have added our own patent pending process to work with slightly curved surfaces and certain textured surfaces. Not all nano suction pads are same.
What is a flexible tube?
It is a metal tube covered with polymer for corrosion protection. The metal tube is made of many smaller metals assembled for small radius flexibility and stiffness to hold its adjusted shape. Typical similar flex tubes don’t have the high quality control our supplier has for bend radius, holding stiffness and smoothness. As a matter of fact, we only found one supplier that met our specification with consistent quality between here and Asia.
How FUMM Works:
The nano suction pad holds mobile devices to FUMM and FUMM attaches to flat smooth surfaces.
The flexible tubes allow easy angle adjustment and hold their position in the set angle.
Patent pending features of FUMM allow nano suction pads to stick to gently curved smooth surfaces, like a car windshield, and some textured surfaces, like a refrigerator.
If FUMM loses its ability to suction due to dust or oil, simply wash and pat dry for fresh suction power. If the suction pads are damaged from an accident or ages from normal wear and tear they can easily be replaced. See FAQ for more details.
FUMM can be used with any mobile device and any mounting locations with a clean, flat, smooth surface to mount nano-suction pad. Any such window, table, desk, wall or door will work.
FUMM can also be used as a stand and a dock for any mobile device with smooth flat rear surface.
FUMM will mount in car, airplane tray, office desk, kitchen counter, restaurant table, tiled wall, police car, coffee table, bar counter, rental car, flat screen, bleacher, car hood… you get the picture!
It can be flattened and carried anywhere.
Why Plastic Body!
FUMM is made with the engineered polymer rather than aluminum or titanium so it will stay cooler in sunlight. Shiny metal is definitely pretty but they get quite hot in direct sunlight. Another benefit of polymer FUMM is a superior impact resistance. If you drop FUMM it will sustain minor scratches if that. If you accidentally step on FUMM, it may have minor scratches, but not if it was a metal. It is the best material for true mobile mount.
Not All Nano Suction Pads Are Created Equal?
Nope! FUMM utilizes specially designed nano suction pads using unique process for increased suction strength, and to work on curved surfaces like a car windshields and certain textured surfaces like refrigerator. See if other nano suction pads can do that. It is a unique patent pending FUMM design.
True Universal Mobile Mount? How?
Yes, it is universal because FUMM works with most mobile devices AND it is universal it works in most situations. Almost all smartphones, GPS, digital cameras and iPods work with FUMM for mounting, viewing, charging, holding on all flat, smooth, non-porous surfaces.
It is universally mobile because you can bring it with you. How many other stands or mounts would you bring along to most places you go.
Current Progress and Production Plan
FUMM has quite a simple design. Parts suppliers have been identified and materials qualification has already been conducted. My plan is to subcontract the production to one of three U.S. contract manufacturers. Final manufacturer selection will depend on final funding amount and product variations chosen by Kickstarter backers. FUMM can be machine cut and assembled for small quantity production or injection molded and assembled for higher quantity or multi-color production. FUMM specification drawings are prepared waiting for funding decision, dimension, color and a purchase order for manufacturing.
Risks and challenges
Several working prototypes are made. The initial FUMM offered here will be made of UV-resistant black polymer and sized for current iPhones. Various materials for plastic body and flexible tubes have been tested and qualified. Several versions of design have been tested and a final design has been selected.
Many potential suppliers for FUMM parts don’t have the required technical specifications for their materials and cannot really guarantee the consistent quality of their materials, but we have taken steps to ensure this will not be the case with our FUMM suppliers.
Our backers will need to vote on the second and third FUMM designs for our stretch goal.
All materials are sourced from the US, and US-based contract manufacturers are on board for production.
Upon funding, the final production facility will be selected and we expect FUMM will be shipped within 90 days.
Shipping packaging and international shipping processes need to be refined.
We have the completed design, sourcing, prototype production, testing, selected focus group studies and quotes from several manufacturers; but it would be prudent to let our backers know that the possibility of unforeseen events and difficulties always exist. We have single source materials due to their unique patented technologies and quality control. We have done our due diligence to eliminate all production and procurement issues, and we will be working with US suppliers.
We do have extensive experience in design engineering and in working with domestic and overseas electronics and mobile accessory suppliers and manufacturers, but we can use additional expertise in some areas.
However, thus far our final design prototypes are extremely durable, operates as designed, and are within our projected budget.

1. Product Designs
We need our backers to participate in product development decision making for our future products. Our initial FUMM is black and sized to fit iPhone 5. When we reach our second stretch goal, should our second version be sized to fit Galaxy s4 or Galaxy Note 2? Or should it be the same size as the first FUMM but in a different color? We want our backers to tell us what you want. We know what big box stores want and what the focus group is telling us, but what do our backers want? We will produce what you want and deliver your desired FUMM, color and size.
2. Guerrilla eMarketing
We need our backers to help spread the word. Let your favorite website, media or blog know about FUMM. The more backers we get, the more choices of products we can also get. We would love to get to our challenge funding amount and provide a second model of FUMM. Share news about FUMM on your Facebook, Twitter, or other social media. Submit our Press Release package to your local new media.

The nano suction pads can hold more than four pounds (4 lbs), but the flexible tubes are rated for 7 oz at 70ºC. FUMM can hold more weight depending on its orientation. The combination of the nano suction pad size and the flexible tube stiffness involves a balance between numerous design factors. The optimal balance of the factors for most small handheld devise was determined to be 7 oz weight and 4”x6”x0.5” size. The base FUMM offered here is optimized for this weight and size.
Kickstarter doesn’t allow multiple of the same item as a reward. As a market validation and crowd funding website this is a reasonable policy that we respect. However, we are open to any suggestions that comply with Kickstarter policy and satisfy our backers.

I get skeptical sometimes too. Then, I can’t trust even the pictures and videos. The bumpiness of the road and shake of the image is NOT simulated. I am sure someone can analyze the video and see if it is authentic. I am sure NASA can. NSA? Anyway, the video is uploaded without any edit just in case, so please excuse my poor videography skills.
Aluminum is beautiful! FUMM uses engineered polymer instead of aluminum for better performance. Polymer keeps its temperature cooler than Aluminum in sunlight. Polymer is lighter and has better impact resistant than aluminum. Our selection of engineered polymer is better suited for mobile mount. Maybe if there is enough request we can consider a special aluminum FUMM reward for aesthetic reason.
White FUMM can be our stretch goal design depending on backer votes.
Yes it will work in hot and cool weather. The nano suction pad doesn't work in freezing temperature. Your only concern should be whether you should keep that iPhone unattended in that extreme condition, unless there is a cool AC breeze flowing over the iPhone. (Actually, an unattended iPhone would be bad idea in any temperature :) )
Yes it can as long as the case has a CLEAN smooth flat surface. Any hard glossy surface is best. Hard textured surface like refrigerator doors work well too. FUMM also works with bumper case, and cases made with TPU (ThermoPlastic Polyurethane). It can stick to most hard solid materials except for those with dusty and oily surfaces or those with silicone rubber treated surfaces. The plastic-metal option in new FUMM should work with all cases.
Cleanliness of the nano suction pad and cleanliness of the mounting surface are the main factors that affect FUMM’s effectiveness.
FUMM is made with solid UV-resistant, impact resistant plastic. The hinges and plastic body are attached to each other and it will stand more than 10lbs of pull force.
The nano suction pad is a newly invented material. It is a patented proprietary material made using a proprietary process. There are no market data on how long it will last in every day use. During our testing, we have used it in on our windshield mount for several months and it held up well. We expect the nano suction pad will give you a reasonable length of useful life (several generations of smartphones; 3-8 years) use when not left out in the weather continuously. All foams and adhesive used are outdoor rated US manufactured materials.
8. How to clean FUMM; My FUMM doesn’t stick well after I used it on dirty oily surface. What can I do?
Wash FUMM with mild soap (light dish washing detergent) and rinse with cool water. Pad dry with a non-lint towel and let the nano suction pad dry completely. The water trapped in nano suction cups must be dried before it can stick well again.
If you want quick cleaning, you can clean the nano suction pads by sticking Scotch tape and removing quickly.
Maybe, but for desk top uses only. FUMM is not designed for use with the iPad mini, Kindle or any other mini tablet devices. This may be a subsequent project or stretch goal project. FUMM for iPad mini would have a larger plastic body and larger nano suction pads for full universal situation functionality.
Yes, FUMM is a universal mount, a universal stand and a universal dock. It can charge your iPhones or Androids while on the mount with a charging cord.
Yes, it can be replaced. Contact us for the replacement pads. The nano suction pad has worked great for us during our prototyping and qualifying period. However, they are synthetic rubber and they will get damaged if rubbed on rough surfaces.
Some of you have asked about this, whether $35 is my lowest price. 1 FUMM and domestic US shipping is lowest price I can do for now. Price can improve with larger production quantity and overseas manufacturing.
The real reason is the quality level of the components and the special processed FUMM nano suction pads. FUMM requires our unique nano suction pads, special flex tubes, stainless steel dowels, and engineered polymer bodies. Our nano suction pads are different than other nano-suction tapes. FUMM uses patent-pending process to improve nano-suction tapes to work on textured surfaces and curved surfaces. This process improves suction holding power on certain applications too.
