Inspired by Digimon, Mad Max and John Wick
Mercenary Team Safari is the story of a boy (Otto) and his velociraptor (Spike) who rely on each-other for survival . After a civil war erupts in their nation, known as Mojarra, they're forced to become self-sustaining farmers away from the chaos. This life becomes harder and harder as the ongoing war interferes with basic survival. When the opportunity of becoming mercenaries falls on Spike and Otto, they accept before their situation becomes fatal.
Why a Hybrid Velociraptor?
The image of a velociraptor and soldier fighting side-by-side was always really cool to me. They'd have each-other's back, use creative tactics in battle, and be unstoppable. The velociraptor would be able to dodge incoming fire with its agility, then attack with instinctual precision. Meanwhile, the soldier lays down suppressive fire for his predator partner, and makes the tactical decisions in a firefight. They're always outmanned, outgunned...but never outfought.
From Graphic Novel to Animated Film!
I wrote Mercenary Team Safari as a feature length animated film: a script, soundtrack, voice-overs, camera movements, original music, and sound design. However, creating an animated movie requires a lot of resources that aren't available to those outside the industry. This is why I will be putting your funds to work on a graphic novel adaptation first with the amazing company Storyboard Graphic Novels. These LA-based professionals specialize in creating graphic novels from movie scripts. The funds raised will be paying the most talented artist in the industry to bring Mercenary Team Safari to life as a digital graphic novel!
Stephen L. Stern - Storyboard Graphic Novels President:
Best known as the creator/writer of the indie comic-book Zen Intergalactic Ninja, Steve is a former advertising agency president with clients including Johnson&Johnson, Rosenthal China and The Singer Company. He now lives in Los Angeles, where he launched Storyboard Graphic Novels 8 years ago, working with several of his longtime friends and associates—who just happen to be some of the highest-profile artists and writers in the industry today.
How Your Funding Will Be Utilized
- Total Amount Raised = $8000
- Storyboard Graphic Novel - 35 Page Colored Digital GN = $6825
- Kickstarter, Processing, and BackerKit Fees = $1040
- Dragon Commando Commissions = $90-$450
- Maximum Budget = $8,315 (I will shoulder any extra cost)
To further develop Mercenary Team Safari, I hired an amazing artist in New York to flesh out the main characters in her unique style. Allie Ballesteros is a graduate of Parsons School of Design and has a gritty style I really dig for the world of Mojarra.

Proper Reward Fulfillment
This is my first Kickstarter, which may lead you to question if I can handle reward fulfillment. How will I make sure all rewards are fulfilled efficiently and smoothly? Well...BackerKit! If the project reaches it's goal of $8000 and there's a lot of backer's to thank (Praying for this), I will utilize these Crowdfunding Professionals for proper reward fulfillment. They have already helped over 5900 Kickstarter Creators in their campaigns and have organized information on around 10 million backers.
Thank you BackerKit :)

Risks and challenges
Storyboard Graphic Novels, the company that will produce Book 1, has 8 years of experience in creating high-quality graphic novels. I trust fully in their experience. The script for Book 1 is complete and ready to be rendered as a graphic novel. I've also added "padding" in the budget and timeframe for rewards. This will make up for any unforeseen hiccups that may occur during production.
The challenges of Mercenary Team Safari revolve around this being my first Kickstarter Campaign. Learning the platform was a daunting task. I'm a creative at heart but know the importance of logistics. Through reading the Creator's Handbook, watching Official Kickstarter 101 courses, taking diligent notes, and not rushing the process, I feel confident in this new venture.
A fresh, exciting and emotional story is what I want for all my backers and I ensure all rewards will be fulfilled. Period.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
