Handshields Playing Cards
Handshields playing cards are created to combine simplicity and elegance with a classical timeless design.
Handshields playing cards design
Being part of the magic and cardistry communities for quite a number of years, I have always wanted to create a deck of cards that relates to who I am as an "artist". The mix of these two art forms set the foundation and birth of the Handshields design.
The design of these cards takes both cardistry and magic into consideration. From a magician’s perspective, I particularly enjoy an elegant and classical design as well as a strong contrast between the backs and the faces of the cards. As a cardist, I like a design which enhances the different motions of the cards while flourishing (this is the reason for the straight line right in the middle of the deck). This deck is basically a combination of everything I am looking for in a pack of playing cards and I hope you will appreciate it as much as I do!
The logo of the deck is inspired by "Handshield", which is a spiny move in which the cards rotate around both hands. You can see a picture of the Handshield display used for the design below. Around the logo is a classical "H" which of course stands for "Handshields".
If this project is successful, the cards will be printed by the United States Playing Card Factory (USPC) with the embossed (air-cushion) finish which is the favourite among cardists and magicians. So these cards will be of the best possible quality.
The objective for the Handshields playing cards project is to print as many decks as possible so that everyone around the world can use them. In order to print a batch (minimum of 2500 decks), the threshold of 12000 Euros needs to be reached. Depending on the amount of backers, the number of decks could be stretched to 5000 (or more) but this only depends on you!
The back design
The court cards are modified in a few ways. The design is simplified, the facial expressions are slightly modified to make the characters look more appealing and the colours from the back design are used (dark red and dark blue). You can refer to the below images to compare the standard court cards with the Handshields court cards.
In this deck, there will be no jokers. The reason is simple: I don't use them. It has happened in the past that I opened a new deck of cards and thought: "Wow these jokers are really great! Too bad I have to throw them away..."
No matter how cool they look, I have always felt they were useless. So instead, I have decided to print cards which could be put to good use: one double-backer, one blank card (you could express your own art on this one!) and two special cards that magicians will enjoy (4 cards in total to replace the 2 jokers and the 2 advertising cards).
The box is very simple and elegant. Three colours are used:
- Light beige for the background
- Dark red (darker than the back design of the cards)
- Dark blue (the same as the back design of the cards)
The Handshields playing cards will be fulfilled by Art of Play, a well-known company in the card community which offers the most reliable fulfillment service. You will get your cards as fast as possible once they are printed!
What can you expect when you pledge? Well, first of all you will get what I think will be an amazing new deck of cards (or several if you are generous!).
But also, I have decided to thank all the backers with awesome cardistry tutorials. First of all, everyone who will pledge at least 1 deck will receive the tutorial for Handshield. Moreover, 5 new unpublished moves will be included in the different perks depending on your pledge. You can see these 6 moves (5 new moves & Handshield) in the following video. Please watch it in HD for a better viewing experience!
List of the moves in order of appearance:
Handshield (from 1s to 16s)
Kendo (from 16s to 26s)
Feathers (from 26s to 36s)
Wolves (from 36s to 46s)
Elta (from 46s to 56s)
Black Swan (from 56s to 1min 8s)
Note: the faces of the cards that you can see in the video or in the different pictures are not the ones which will be printed by the USPCC. This deck of cards is only a prototype. Only the back design will be the same.
Oh... and one more thing. If you back 6 decks or more, you get a free access to the Vortex cardistry project which was released one year ago. This alone makes the 6-deck perk the most valuable of all perks so make sure you check it out.
Here is another preview video with some of the moves which are included in the Vortex project.

Risks and challenges
This project has fixed funding. In other words, if the threshold of 12000 Euros is not reached within the 30-day period, you won't pay a dime! However, it would also mean that the cards won't get printed, so please support this project to make Handshields Playing Cards a reality!
The design is ready and the factory is only waiting in order to print these cards so as soon as this project is funded, the cards will be on their way to production. And to you! (the shipping addresses will be collected at the end of the campaign).
If you have any questions or comments, you can message me and I will get back to you as soon as possible!
