Nohohon Tea Room: Gathering a community around tea

What is Nohohon's story?

In 2015, Nohohon was first opened in Toronto as a healthy alternative to commercialized bubble tea. Soon it evolved to be a way for us to share a taste of the Japanese soul with the city. We source our tea directly from Shizuoka, Japan, where it is organically grown and picked by traditional methods to make the best of matcha.

With everyone’s help, Nohohon has grown in the past couple of years, even expanding into New York City. We've met so many people in North America that have steeped themselves deeply in Japanese culture, and have shown us the voice we can add to the city of Toronto. To learn more about us: nohohontea.com or follow us on Instagram @nohohontearoom and @nohohonteanyc

Who is Nana?

Nanako Mizutani, "Nana" for short, is the owner of Nohohon. What first began as a journey separate from the Japanese way, over the years has evolved to become a quest to revisit, rediscover, and reconnect with her Japanese heritage through tea and gatherings. You can find her at: @nanako_mizutani

Why do we need your help?

Although we love where Nohohon has grown, we want to become more than just a takeaway tea shop. Our intention is to build a strong foundation for Japanese culture in the heart of the city. We want to bring forward the work of the artisans that we collaborate with: our tea farmers, ceramicists, and chefs.

To do that, we’ll need to expand. The space that we found is modest, but working with local artists, designers, and woodworkers, we’re transforming it. Nohohon's new space will feature a tatami room for tea ceremonies and tea gatherings, a tea bar where you can choose your own ceramic vessel to drink from, more cafe seating, and an art gallery space. Through all these new spaces we hope to give you, our supporters, a fuller Japanese experience.

What will your pledge go towards?

  • The gathering and building of a community around Japanese culture and tea.
  • A fuller tearoom experience.
  • To support the creatives like Secret Teatime's ceramics, or Abokichi's food and workshops, and to give them a place where they can share their craft.
  • Supporting youth involvement in agriculture in Japan by creating a Japanese tea market in North America.
  • Creating a bridge from farm-to-cafe; Japan to Toronto and New York.
  • To bring Nohohon's intention to a wider audience.

As the first step to showcasing more of our artisan friends, we've created a series of mini-documentaries you to enjoy. The mini-docs will be published every week here on Kickstarter, so make sure you keep an eye on our campaign!

NOHOHON'S MATCHA

Nohohon's quality matcha is organically sourced directly from the tea farms of Shizuoka, Japan. Our matcha is stem-free, 100% peptide-free and is friendly for consumers, farmers, and our planet. Gently steamed leaves are deliberately dried up in a traditional brick hearth. Stems and leaf ribs are carefully removed from the leaf blade by the process of sieving, creating a matcha that is less bitter, naturally sweeter, creamy, and full-bodied. Shizuoka is also traditionally known for its cleaner spring water and volcanic soil. this is because of its proximity to Mt. Fuji.

SECRET TEATIME'S CERAMICS

Secret Teatime is made up of the talented artists Helen and Sorlie. The lovely duo creates handmade ceramic wares in their secret studio in Toronto, Canada. Having both lived in Japan, Helen and Sorlie have also practiced Chado (the way of tea) for over a decade. Secret Teatime collaborates with cafes, restaurants, and tearooms to create custom or signature pieces for everyday and special occasions. ABOKICHI

Abokichi is the brainchild of Jess and Fumi. They are dedicated to sharing what is ubiquitous and unassuming in Japan, allowing for it to find new life in Canada. What first began as an Onigiri rice ball adventure soon evolved into a development of Okazu, a Japanese chili oil. Their Okazu is driven by the intention to provide a delicious all-natural condiment without preservatives, msg, and stabilizers. Check them out here: www.abokichi.com or follow them on Instagram @abokichilife

Below is a visual timeline of what we will be roughly anticipating.

Risks and challenges

—Delays in production and shipping: With so many incredible creatives and artisans involved, there may be a slight chance of delays due to production time. We will do our best to deliver the products to you as soon as possible.

—Unforeseen supply chain issues: The tea is shipped a long way from farms in Shizuoka, Japan; there may be issues out of our control that affect shipping times.

—Teaware breakage: Should this occur, please send us a picture of the item exactly as it was received.

—Travel dates: Guide trips to Shizuoka will be scheduled during harvest season in Japan, end of April to the end of May. Should there be any changes to your stay, we will notify you as soon as possible.

— Consistency in ceramic tea bowl design: Each ceramic bowl is hand-crafted and one-of-a-kind, so designs may vary slightly from one another.
