About this project
We're Funded! Thank you so much!!!
If you missed out on the Kickstarter campaign, check out the KitRex website to learn how to get a KitRex kit some time in the near future!
A KitRex is a flat-packed, paper dinosaur that you construct by folding and tabbing together specially cut pieces of high-quality Bristol board. It balances on its feet and can be decorated with googly eyes, feathers, and what ever else you can imagine.
Check out a 3D representation of KitRex, brought to you by SketchFab: click the triangle, let it load, then click, drag, and zoom to experience KitRex in 3D!
KitRex began as a homework assignment where I was asked to research a manufacturing process and demonstrate it in a unique way. I decided to research Industrial Origami, and over the course of 50 hours I designed, cut, and built a wearable 15-ft long velociraptor out of cardboard. I took him to a costume ball, and when I tromped into the room, literally everyone stopped to stare. He was the star of the evening, and everyone wanted one. I knew I had to do something. To learn more, visit www.kit-rex.com.
When I made my giant velociraptor, I had no idea that other people would want one too. But most people don't have room for a 15ft long monster clambering around in their kitchen (Jurassic Park, anyone?), so I thought I would try for something smaller. Armed with that knowledge and my passion for folding paper, I began developing something I call the KitRex- the miniature version of the giant dinosaur.
I have spent the past few months prototyping and testing the mini velociraptor kits with kids ranging from age 8 to 12 (including a whole girl scout troop). Many lessons have been learned and an equally large number of changes have been made. Here are what the kids who tried it out had to say:
"I love it, it really makes you think" -Lelani, age 11
"It's challenging, but I like it, it's like a puzzle" - Megan, age 9
"It's really neat how things you don't expect to turn into body parts do" - Stephen, age 10
"I like it because it's 3d, you play with it, make videos with it, and it's colorful" -Alascia, age 8
"It's a toy you need to think about" -Bridget, age 10
Why Dinosaurs? Because everyone loves dinosaurs. They occupy this wonderful space between reality and fantasy, which encourages imaginative thinking and creativity.
These are the colors that your KitRex can be produced in. After the campaign, a survey will be sent out to ensure that each person receives the color of their choice! (Or, you could choose not to answer the survey, and receive a color at random!)
Risks and challenges
All of my prototyping has been done using a laser cutter, but this tool isn't meant for high-volume production. This is where you come in: I need to purchase a custom-made steel die to cut the complex shapes out of bristol board to make the kits. I already have manufacturing of the the die set up with a company in Wisconsin. Assembly of the kits will take place here in the Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania. In order to pay for the steel die to produce large quantities of KitRex kits, I'll need at least 450 pre-orders from Kickstarter. I'll be using only high quality, vibrant-color Bristol board for these kits.
Production will start as soon as the campaign is successful.
Yes! In a couple weeks, I will have pictures of all the colors with actual dinos I've made.
The KitRex velociraptor is 3ft long, 15 inches tall, and 5 inches wide, great to put on your desk or shelf!
Simply because it's custom made. The dino you see in my video was designed to fit my body exactly. To make another large dino for someone would require careful fitting, which could require a lot of extra time. Plus, using the laser cutter can be expensive when you don't have one in house.
That being said, I do plan on making a much more cost-effective large dino some time in the future, but please understand that right now my focus is on making the smaller dinos.
Again, because it's designed to fit my body, it mostly likely would not fit another person's correctly. It would really stink to spend hours cutting it out and putting it together, only to find that it didn't fit! Plus, since I plan on selling it in the future, I don't want to deal with a potential copyright infringement issue that could result if someone else tried to make money off of my design.
I will send out a survey when the campaign ends so that everyone can make their color choices. If you choose not to fill it out, you will receive a color at random.
I will send out a survey when the campaign ends so that everyone can fill out where they would like their dino to be sent to.
Yes! Each kit comes with 40mm googly eyes
