UPDATE! We hit our goal! See below for stretch goals and a few new pages we've added.
Who We Are
Heather Bay - Heather is a wedding florist/mom. She went to college for English Education and chose a career of floral design in its place. She loves her career, but writing these books allows her to express herself and her vision, while helping to teach she and Dan's son a better way to interact with the world. Ideally this kickstarter will be a success and allow her to write more children's books in this series as well as give her a chance to work more from home.
Daniel Govar - Daniel has been drawing his entire life. His mother tells stories of him drawing on the walls as a toddler making masterpieces at 2 ft. His credits include a variety of comics for Marvel, Dynamite, Valiant, DC, and a few he's self-published. He has also done work in the animation world for SyFy and Nike, and worked as a creative director on projects for Fortune 500 companies. He currently has an art exhibit running through the first week of April In Saint Petersburg, Florida on Gods and Goddesses of the ancient world.
How the Book Was Born
During the last election (just after the republican nominee was decided), We came up with a clever idea for a children's book. Heather wanted to write about her moral outrage, but we decided to go with an alternative idea. A children's book that expressed our feelings in a playful and positive way. Something appropriate for young children while remaining amusing to parents.
Roughly a year ago, Heather wrote this book. Over the last year, Dan and Heather have worked through small areas of the text as well as the overall vision for Dan's illustrations. Now we are ready to move forward with our book and just in time since our now our 2 year old son is old enough to enjoy it.
Our son loves to look at books and have us read to him. We took many cues from what he is drawn to and requests to have reread to him most often. Now having read so many kids books, we've established our favorites and our son has shown us his.
The best books have a great message for kids (and adults) and being filled with great animals doesn't hurt! Our son LOVES animals and learning about different kinds of animals seems to be one of the easiest things to teach him. Using those animals as our characters just seemed the natural road to take. Keeping him (and hopefully other children) interested in our message is the most important part of this to us.
The reason we are coming to the public for help, instead of submitting to publishers is that we needed to make this fast. Who knows how current this project would be, or if it would even be relevant in another year! And to make things harder, Daniel was swamped with work! So we need your help in making our book a reality.
The story is about Ronald Trunk and his his son Ronnie, who are elephants that live in a big white house. Ronnie wants to make friends in his new neighborhood and there are lots of interesting animals who live on the other side of a creek, next to his house. His over-protective father Ronald doesn't want him playing with the children on that side of the water, so he decides to build a great big wall.
The story will hit a little close to home for some and it echoes challenges our country and others are facing, but regardless of what side of the fence you're on, the message to our children and future generations is a good one: Build bridges, not walls.
Aside from the below preview pages, Backers will get updates on the book's development along with shots of the Thumbnails for the book, new pages as they are finalized, a detailed timeline, and backer rewards as they're produced.
Once funded, Daniel will begin finishing the remaining pages, which have already been laid out, and then it's off to the printer! The pages take roughly a day to complete. We have already received quotes from a number of printers, all of which are overseas, and we've discussed a number of stretch goal options should our funding be exceeded, including a possible second book in the series, which Heather is writing now. (There's a whole series we've thought of!)
As you can see above the book is hand painted by Daniel. The book will measure 10x11inches, and be hard cover with 32 pages; something we've found to be a formula among most children's books for this age range.
What is your money going towards?
Here's the best part! The goal that we've set is going entirely towards the printing costs of the book, and the various Kickstarter fees an taxes. Should we go over our goal Daniel and Heather will make a modest and equal page rate. Should that be exceeded: A stretch goal will unlock and onto the printing costs for book 2! If Book 2's printing is funded, a new tier with book 1 & 2 will open up. It's a series that is planned, but we want to get over this hurdle first.
And before we forget, we plan to donate 1 dollar from every book sale to wildlife conservation.
With only a couple of days from the Kickstarter End date, we have almost hit our second stretch goal. The next goal we have is a ways off, but Our plan is for this to be the first in a series of 5 books - eventually all being collected into a slipcase.
1 . $10,500 - A remark by Daniel in each pledged book reward, and signed by Daniel and Heather
2 . $11000 - A Bookmark designed by Daniel in each rewarded book
3 . To Be Unlocked - Book 2 - Morals concerning sharing
Risks and challenges
Like all parents with children, our biggest challenge is time. Our script is written and our thumbnails for each page and spread have been mapped out. Many pages have been created, but there are still around 20 to complete. Our rate of production is a page a day, roughly. These pages will be Daniel's day-work should the project be funded, for the month of May in order to get the book out in time to meet our projected delivery date.
Because this book will be printed overseas, there is a 5-6 week period for shipping the books back here, and there is an approval period to consider as well. Daniel is a full-time, professional illustrator and has produced books and comics before, and he's dealt with the challenges that can arise in print publications. (Plus, Heather will kick his butt if this thing doesn't get finished ASAP.)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
