Could your cuisine reign supreme?
Fyood Kitchen is a cooking competition that challenges teams to transform mystery ingredients into creative dishes without recipes.
We're in a golden age of food, but for many, cooking is primarily a series of chores: meal planning, grocery shopping, and doing the dishes. Some of us lack confidence in our culinary abilities and some just don’t have the energy. There’s this awesome, creative cooking movement going on, but many people feel they can’t personally participate in it.
Here’s your chance! Please back this Kickstarter campaign to bring Fyood Kitchen to life and let us inspire you to play with your food.
Where We Cook
Fyood Kitchen is a member of Fork Food Lab, a kitchen incubator and a previous Kickstarter-funded project. The Lab provides a sparkling professional kitchen with a large range, beautiful workstations, and many of the necessary tools for Fyood players to cook whatever they can imagine.
However, commercial bakers at Fork use 40-quart mixers and bake for hundreds. We need something a little more appropriately-sized. This Kickstarter is aimed at filling in those gaps.
Why We're Kickstarting Fyood
This project will enable Fyood to invest in the equipment we need to take our cooking competition events to the next level. Our list of must-have gear is as follows:
- Stand mixers
- Food processors
- Ice cream machine
- Deep fryer
- Spice containers and uniform bulk bins to make it easy for cooks to quickly find what they need in the pantry
- Culinary torch
- Assortment of plate shapes and sizes for cooks to use in presentation
- Mortars and pestles
- Waffle maker
- An enormous digital timer so cooks can watch the round tick away, second by second
Beyond our equipment library, we're building a community of people who believe that cooking can and should be fun. Through this Kickstarter campaign, we want to hear your feedback and ideas on how to make Fyood Kitchen even better.
How can we make Fyood YOUR social cooking competition? Help us shape the best event ever - and then come enjoy it!
How Exactly Does One Fyood?
By the numbers:
- 50-60 minutes per round
- 4 mandatory mystery ingredients
- 3-4 judges on the panel
- 2-4 cooks per team
- 2 rounds
- 0 recipes
There's no substitute for actually participating in an event, but we put together this video to help give you an idea of what goes on at Fyood Kitchen:
The Story of Fyood
Hi! Maddie here. I first imagined what Fyood could be in June of 2016, and the idea was so electric that I left my job by the end of July to pursue Fyood full-time. I held the first test event on September 6th in my apartment kitchen and things have been moving at a breakneck speed ever since.
I've been organizing events and fundraising my entire adult life. Until now, however, every project has been primarily on behalf of someone else’s cause. And it’s easier to ask for help when you’re not the direct beneficiary. Fyood is already so much bigger than myself and my idea, but it’s also deeply me.
To date, Fyood has run 11 test events for over 110 players. The Fyood “I” became “we” as Tim Cardoso (right-most judge above) came onboard during the soft launch phase. We’ve tested factors like time limits, judging formats, and ingredient combinations to make sure we’re building the best event possible. And now that we have a good idea what that looks like, we need your help putting it all together.
The process of creating Fyood has already changed my life enormously. I've learned that welcoming vulnerability and trying despite the chance of failure might just be the secret to everything: meaningful work, great relationships, and – of no lesser importance – delicious food.
In launching this Kickstarter project, I’m trying to practice the brand of vulnerability that I’ve watched Fyoodies exhibit event after event towards the goal of making something amazing. Please back this campaign and help me create Fyood Kitchen.
Thank you so much! -Maddie
We're not above making pie-related jokes about the following graph, so please enjoy this estimated cake-down of our KicksTARTer funds.
We Love Local!
Portland, Maine is famous for its outstanding chefs and restaurants, and with good reason. Less glamorized, but just as integral to Maine's food ecosystem are our outstanding food producers, farmers, fishermen, and foragers.
We believe that the best ingredients come from local producers, so we're cultivating relationships with farmers and makers and will feature their products in Fyood mystery baskets and pantry. We're excited to build a platform that introduces foodies to wonderful ingredients while supporting the local food infrastructure at the same time.
Stretch Goals and More Cities
The successful completion of this campaign will enable us to run outstanding Fyood events and give you the tools and environment to discover your inner Mario Batali (should we add a stretch goal just for Crocs?).
However, there's potential to have even more fun with Fyood, from hiring a dedicated event photographer to hosting a grill competition and barbecue for our backers on Portland's scenic waterfront.
For non-Portlanders, we’ll prioritize bringing Fyood test events to the top backer cities as we grow, so encourage your friends and neighbors to join the campaign!
Every dollar we receive beyond our goal will be put toward evolving our events and giving you more ways to play with your Fyood. Please back this Kickstarter project and help bring Fyood Kitchen to life. Thank you!
Risks and challenges
At the moment, most of our challenges boil down to math. We can only host so many people at our events, and can only run one event at a time. The folks at Fork Food Lab are wonderful to work with and are accommodating of the space that running these events requires. That said, Fork is a working kitchen that is in use by other members whose time we need to consider.
To best mitigate this challenge, we're building the registration section of our website and adding a calendar so that backers and future customers will be able to see at a glance when events are being held and how many spots are available. Scheduling for these events will begin soon after the conclusion of the campaign so that we can hit the ground running and get you in the kitchen!
Also, in the event that someone backs at the $10,000 level and wants us to host a Fyood event at the South Pole, we imagine that learning how to lead a team of sled dogs might also present a challenge.*
*Never mind. Turns out, dogs aren't allowed at the South Pole. We'll pull the sled ourselves.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
