Hello! Thank you for stopping to look at our project! We are Peter Dunham and Linnea Gits, the designers and artists behind the Chicago design studio, Uusi and we are incredibly excited to introduce our project to you: an entirely hand-painted deck of Limited Edition Playing Cards called "Uusi Classic."
"Uusi Classic" is the sixth and final playing card deck in our six-deck series that began almost 3 years ago. When we first started this journey our hoped-for mission was to create six unique and completely hand-drawn decks that would explore and push the boundaries of this multitudinous genre. Kickstarter was the perfect platform to present these unusual decks as each one was a labor of love – no two are the same in style or theme - so we never knew from one deck to the next if we would get funded. Arriving at our last playing card deck in this series feels almost surreal, but the journey we have shared with you of discovery, innovation and enjoyment has been one we will never forget!
*All images of the deck and tuck boxes you see in these photos are prototypes made at Uusi's studio. The finished product may vary slightly from what you see here – backers will be kept up-to-date of any minor changes that may occur. The overall design and theme will remain UNCHANGED throughout the funding and printing process.
- Fifty-two playing cards and two jokers - all with original, eye-catching artwork that makes them ideal for magic and card games, yet at the same time very familiar and immediately recognizable by players and spectators alike.
- Two illustrated Uusi Design ad cards that form a diptych.
- Printed by the United States Playing Card Company.
- BLUE DECK is an unlimited edition.
- RED DECK is a Limited Edition of 3500.
- Printed on Bicycle playing card stock with an Air Cushion (linen) finish.
- Heavy, premium paper stock for the tucks with an embossed design.
Back in the spring of 2012 the inspiration for this entire series began with the ironically "radical" decision to use only traditional art methods and mediums to create the artwork for our decks. Though the history of this genre has seen centuries of hand-drawn artwork, the 21st century saw a decline in these traditional artistic methods in favor of computer generated imagery. As awesome as a crisp, graphic line is from a computer, your eye does not linger on it the same way it does one that is drawn by hand. There is emotion and feeling to a mark made by a person that a computer just cannot replicate and it is this "emotional line" that we wanted to recapture for all our decks.
The second "unusual" move we made when planning this series was to create entirely original court characters for all the decks. At the time we launched this series most custom decks were made using altered variations of the standard English court characters with original artwork largely reserved for the tuck, playing card backs and Ace of Spades, so pushing past this format into unique characters felt like a big gamble to us. When we launched our first deck, Blue Blood, with it's floating samurai-like royalty we had no idea if it would be accepted or not, but after it was successfully funded and sold out just a month after it's release, we knew the market was ready and hungry for this change. Shortly thereafter in the fall of 2012 the entire Kickstarter custom playing card market exploded.
Being one of a handful of designers working on custom decks on Kickstarter at the beginning of this movement was thrilling and intense. We were putting out two entirely hand drawn decks a year and at times the work on these decks and our project commitments overwhelmed our small design studio. We were cheered on though by our backers, collectors, the press and retailers whose discovery and delight in custom decks was growing almost as rapidly as the designers who were entering this market to create them. It wasn't long before we had unintentionally become established playing card designers in this custom deck renaissance.
"Uusi Classic" Inspiration It is fitting then that the artwork in our last deck should draw its inspiration from the Renaissance era as the word "Renaissance" literally translates from French to English as "Rebirth." We wanted to close out the series celebrating the rebirth of this humble item with our own interpretation of a classic style playing card deck. We hope you enjoy our interpretation of a classic theme and help us bring this final deck into the world.
Funding for this project: We have been designing and producing these Limited Edition decks for over a three years now and with each one we maintain a high level of artistry. We have raised the manufacturing process to give you the most value on this item that we possibly can by improving the paper quality of the tuck box and card stock, adding embossing and keeping our decks made in the USA by the renown playing card manufacturer, The United States Playing Card Company. Each deck we create is a labor of love that needs your support – no two are the same and thus, on each deck we are taking a chance. We hope "Uusi Classic" has hit the mark with you and you help us bring it into the world!
