Thank you for stopping to look at our project! We are Peter Dunham and Linnea Gits, the designers and artists behind the Chicago design studio, Uusi and we are excited to introduce our project to you; an entirely hand painted deck of Limited Edition playing cards called "Pagan."
Pagan is the fourth Limited Edition deck in our six deck series that began over a year ago. With every deck we create we try to use a new medium so each one has its own distinctive look. The artwork for our first, sold-out deck, "Blue Blood", was created entirely with color pencil. For our second deck, "Bohemia" we chose the velvety look of gouache to give the artwork a lush, expressive quality. "Royal Optik" was all about the line, so with pen & ink we decided to create a woodcut style with the intense geometric patterns of Op Art. For "Pagan" we have returned to one of the oldest mediums in art: oil paint.
Our inspiration for "Pagan" came from our love of the great forests and lakes of Northern Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The smell of the woods, their silence and the enormous beauty of the forests and lakes in that region of the US has always inspired us. When you are deep in the forest the feeling of wilderness is intense and it was that feeling that became the creative starting point for our new deck.
Taking that primal experience and expressing it visually led us to the Pagan era. This was a time in history when religious belief went hand in hand with people's everyday interaction with nature. The expression of this belief played out in different festivals, customs and myths in countries around the world. We chose the pagan regions and customs that covered the fjords and forests of Scandinavia, to the mountainous lands of Central Europe and the misty shores of the British isles to finally, the vast, endless forests and tundras of Russia for inspiration. Those lands bear a resemblance to the forests of the US whose trees, plants and woodland animals and their intense, earthy colors made their way into the costumes, pips and patterns we created for the original artwork in the "Pagan" deck.
The Ace of Spades is an important card in the deck as it sets the tone and look of the deck and is the place where your company signature appears. For Pagan, we chose a young woodland tree that has been felled for use, but continues to live on and epitomizes the phrase: Bowed but unbroken.
The Pagan Jokers are true "wild" cards! We love creating an original joker for each deck we make as they embody the deck's personality in the most playful way and add a little levity to the games of risk & chance played with them.
Our Diptych Ad Cards are unique to Uusi. We were the first designers to develop a diptych for playing cards and used it for the first time on our "Royal Optik" deck. The diptych was originally inspired by transformation decks whose cards, when pieced together form a larger image. We feel they add an original, artistic flair to what otherwise would have become a throw-away set of cards in the deck and bring the perfect last touch to the uncut sheets. For "Pagan" our diptych image is based on the mythological pagan horse called, "Sleipnir" ("Slippy"). As Norse legend has it, Sleipnir is an eight legged horse who is the favorite steed of the Norse god, Odin.
We're going borderless! That's right – we're getting heathen on you. No civilized, "white fences" for this deck! Instead we're returning to one of the original playing card design elements – the borderless back. We have wanted to use this type of back ever since we first began designing our decks, but it wasn't until now that we felt the theme and look perfectly allowed for it. We have a special update for this project that will go further into the history and uses of the borderless back – can't wait to share it with you!
Minimalistic and yet, rich with detail and texture, the Pagan tuck box was designed to reward the senses with it's intricate embossing and elegant gold pattern work. The shimmering gold look of the Pagan tuck box and card backs was achieved by carefully replicating the look of gold leaf with oil paint.

We have been designing and producing these Limited Edition decks for over a year now and with each one we maintain a high level of artistry and starting with "BB Redux" and now on "Pagan", we have raised the manufacturing process to give you the most value on this item that we possibly can. With "Pagan" we have improved the paper quality of the tuck box, added embossing and will produce two different color decks. Each deck we create is a labor of love that needs your support to make happen. We have enjoyed the family of loyal backers who return to our projects and cheer us on - you are our muses – but more importantly, you are all pioneers who are on Kickstarter because you have the vision to search fearlessly for what makes your heart beat just a little faster. We hope "Pagan" has hit the mark with you and that you'll join us on the journey to making it happen!
