Hello! Thank you for stopping to look at our project! We are Peter Dunham and Linnea Gits, the designers and artists behind the Chicago design studio, Uusi and we are excited to introduce our project to you: an entirely hand-drawn deck of Limited Edition Playing Cards called "Hotcakes."
"Hotcakes" is the fifth deck in our eventual six-deck series that began a little over two years ago. With every deck we have created for our series we try to push the boundaries of what this genre has seen. No two are the same in style, medium or theme, but all are created using traditional artistic methods. Whether using the Fine Art medium of oil paint as we did with our Pagan deck, or the expressionistic, colorful washes of gouache that gave Bohemia its signature look or, rubbing soft pastels over color pencil to add a velvety look and texture to our first deck Blue Bloods, our goal is always to create a unique style and theme for each deck. With "Hotcakes" we reached for the most spontaneous medium in our art tool bag – markers!
Following in the historic, playing card tradition, our Ace of Spades is always the title card for our decks. With Hotcakes we wanted to give it the same saucy attitude of the court and felt nothing could be more fitting than two naughty cherubs!
True Hotcakes Fools! Our courting Cock and his bashful Hen add just the right amount of old-fashioned, "awe-shucks" charm to this racy little deck.
Our Diptych Ad Cards are unique to Uusi. We were the first designers to develop a diptych for playing cards and used it for the first time on our "Royal Optik" deck. The diptych was originally inspired by cards of transformation decks, that when pieced together form a larger image. We feel they add an original, artistic flair to what otherwise would have become a throw-away set of cards in the deck and bring the perfect last touch to the uncut sheets.
Nothing but a borderless, lacy back would be right for Hotcakes! The "tighty-whitey" borders have been thrown off for a full-pattern reveal. The hot-neon magenta design makes for an eye-popping fan and a flush of excitement on every deal.
Ooh la, la! Our Hotcakes tuck is royally good fun. A hand colored bustier barely covers this buxom nobel's treasured assets and is printed on luxurious, uncoated, premium paper stock. The design is unzipped in the back adding the perfect, naughty hint at what's inside.
Our Limited Edition, Hotcakes "Modesty Sleeve" keeps all this cheekiness discreetly hidden with the beautiful Hotcakes back pattern printed on very heavy paper stock– the perfect cover to protect and hide a deck of misbehaving royals! These LE cases and decks will not be cello wrapped, they will be vellum wrapped together with a special, Hotcakes seal.
NEW UPDATE: BY POPULAR DEMAND MODESTY SLEEVE AVAILABLE AS AN ADD-ON! FOR THE SLEEVE ONLY (BLACK OR RED) ADD $12 TO YOUR PLEDGE.

*All images of the deck and tuck boxes you see in these photos are prototypes made at Uusi's studio. The finished product may vary slightly from what you see here – backers will be kept up-to-date of any minor changes that may occur. The overall design and theme will remain UNCHANGED throughout the funding and printing process.
Our inspiration for Hotcakes came from traditional 17th Century, full figure court cards that have a cartoonish flair and lent themselves easily to a burlesque-style exaggeration. This new and "naughty" court was then mixed with the Pop Art era's hot-neon colors, Andy Warhol's playful illustration style, the one-off art decks of Charles Pry and the distinctive quailty of the Italian designer & artist, Emillio Pucci's gorgeous patterns to arrive with the final look of Hotcakes.
Using a one-way court does make Hotcakes more of an "art deck" for us than all our other decks, but we were very careful to keep the deck as playable as we could. We made sure – as always – that our indices are large and easy to read when held in your hand, as are the small suit symbols below them. As product designers, creating a deck of playing cards always means keeping a very strong emphasis on the "playing" – we want you to have a deck that is not only pleasing to look at, but one that you can enjoy and share playing any of your favorite games with your family and friends.
- Fifty-two playing cards and two jokers – all with original, eye-catching artwork that makes them ideal for magic and card games, yet at the same time very familiar and immediately recognizable by players and spectators alike.
- Two illustrated Uusi Ad Cards that form a diptych.
- Printed by the United States Playing Card Company (USPCC). *All our artwork has already been pre-approved and is ready for print.
- Limited Edition of 5000 Black decks.
- Printed on Bicycle Playing Card Stock with an Air Cushion (linen) finish.
- Heavy, premium paper for the tucks and a bit heavier paper for the sleeve.
Each deck we create is a labor of love. The Kickstarter experience has introduced us to people from all over the world, like yourself, who share the same passion we do for this humble item.
