Meet Splyt Light

The Splyt Light is a kit of connectors for building your own light fixtures without tools and with a modest budget. Splyt uses the same socket connectors as most fixtures and lightbulbs. You can build your own elaborate chandelier or keep it simple with a small table-top lamp.

So Many Possibilities!

Splyt comes as a kit of parts that lets you design your own fixture. You can add or subtract from your fixture until it's just right for you. Splyt's Y's work with standard off-the-shelf E12 candelabra bulbs of 10 watts or less. Our kits will include bulbs but it's easy to find dozens of different bulb styles that will work as well. This lets you decide on the brightness, whether to use super-bright and energy efficient LED bulbs, or warm glowing incandescents.

Splyt modules will come in three kits - the Starter Kit (Kickstarter Exclusive!), the Starter Table Kit and the Expansion Kit. The Splyt Base Y, which comes in both Starter Kits, screws into the typical North American light socket (E26) and allows you to start building a light fixture.

Starter Kit (Kickstarter Exclusive!)

Starter Kit without a table base. This is great for people who have a cord-set or light socket they want to use with Splyt. Make sure that any socket you use Splyt with is rated for the combined wattage of the bulbs you are using (For example, a Splyt fixture with 8x 10W bulbs means a minimum 80W rating for the socket the Base Y is screwed into). It is our most economical reward and will include:

  • 1x Base Y (socket fits E26 medium base)
  • 2x Large Y's
  • 3x Small Y's
  • 8x 10 watt globe E12 light bulbs

Starter Table Kit

The Starter Table Kit will include everything you need to build a table-top Splyt light fixture. You'll be able to build a wide variety of Splyt combinations and use the stand to power your fixture. It will include:

  • 1x Stand (brass finish, 6-ft black cord)
  • 1x Base Y (socket fits E26 medium base)
  • 2x Large Y's
  • 3x Small Y's
  • 8x 10 watt globe E12 light bulbs

Expansion Kit

To make a larger Splyt fixture, we are offering the Expansion Kit which will come with an additional 5 Splyt modules and accompanying bulbs. The Expansion Kit is intended to be an add-on to the Starter Kits and does not come with the Base Y. It will include:

  • 2x Large Y's
  • 3x Small Y's
  • 8x 10 watt globe E12 light bulbs

The Process

We started sketching initial designs for Splyt in December 2013 and had our first 3D printed prototypes a few months later. We proceeded to make dozens of prototypes before we settled on the final proportions and sizes.

Design Use Recommendations

We have been experimenting with Splyt, building things in our homes and at our studios for the past year. Below, check out one of the larger table constructions we made. We are using several types of low wattage incandescent bulbs (10W or less) and a variety of modules. We are hoping to soon release more types of Splyt modules to complement the Base Y, Large Y and Small Y.

Our Story

Jason and Scott first started working together four years ago creating a public sculpture together. Creating large-scale art was a fun experience, and they wanted to give people the individual satisfaction of creating their own light sculptures. The Splyt light developed out of this collaboration.

We loved the idea of people creating their own fixtures with simple hardware store Y-splitters by screwing lots of them together to make organic, fractal-like chandeliers. We refined the splitter to have better proportions for smaller, finer bulbs. Our goal was to innovate a cleanly designed piece for more elegant fixtures.

Meet the Makers

Jason Krugman works at the intersection of physical computing, fine art and lighting. He runs a studio specializing in interactive architectural LED systems and public artworks. jasonkrugman.com

Scott Leinweber is a computational designer, currently a Fulbright fellow researching digital design in Copenhagen, Denmark, at the Royal Academy. scottleinweber.com

Why we need your support

We need your support to offset a portion of the upfront manufacturing costs for Splyt. We have not compromised on any of the small details that we think will make Splyt a special product - from the matte finish of the plastic parts, to the brass appearance of the table-base. Releasing through Kickstarter helps us to quickly recoup a portion of the initial costs while being able to reward our early supporters with a discount.

Milestones Achieved

  • Design prototyping and final production design
  • Manufacturer onboard
  • License agreement for production
  • Production prototypes already made of manufactured final product

Manufacturing

We’ve partnered with Curio, an Oakland-based lighting manufacturer with years of experience making industrial technology and lighting products in Taiwan. We’ve been working together for almost a year preparing to manufacture and get Splyt in your hands quickly. We feel confident with the prototypes already made at the factory and are poised to begin the first full production run of Splyts this month.

Safety and Technical Use Guidelines

  • Will be ETL Listed (uses UL standards)
  • Maximum of 250W going through Base Y
  • Both incandescent and LED bulbs work great
  • Runs at the North American standard 120 Volts AC
  • Up to 75W can be routed through any particular Y
  • Make fixtures with up to 19 Y’s (including the Base Y) with 10W bulbs

Shipping

US backers get free shipping! International buyers have the average domestic US shipping fees deducted from their shipping costs, so they are not paying the full cost of shipping.

Risks and challenges

Making a product happen in a big way is complicated because there are many parts to the equation, from the aesthetics to materials, manufacturing partners, finances, logistics and more. However, having a strong team is crucial. Our current equation is:

( Jason + Scott = Splyt ) X Curio = Success ( ! )

We have been moving steadily towards our goal of a great product. We cannot wait to share Splyt with you and release it out into the world.
