Universe Gun started life as a webcomic in 2013. It's my solo side project, as "Dr Mike 2000" I'm the writer, artist, letterer and publisher. It's a love letter to the superhero comics of the 70s and 80s that I grew up with, but filtered through a more modern lens, with a hefty dose of futurism, physics, programming and politics. It's suggested for mature readers due to sex and drugs references and the occasional mild nudity, but always treats these adult themes in a progressive and positive way.
I blame the unique art style I've developed on the Yellow Submarine movie. I saw it when I was three, and haven't been the same since!
I've printed single issues and sold more than a few at local comic conventions. This trade paperback is an attempt to put my comics in a form more suitable for the comic readers and comic shops of 2017. I started off intending for this to remain purely digital, but I've realised that I still love having the physical copies, and like many readers I'm sliding from single issues towards trades.
If you want to check out the comic itself before you commit, go to www.universegun.com, or look it up on www.tapastic.com. It's free to read, and I intend to keep it that way, as I know that many of us don't have a lot of disposable income these days. I'm also confident that people will buy physical copies, and this has been backed up by my convention experiences to date.
I've included "Cold Atlas" in this volume, a previously un-printed short story set in the world of Universe Gun, as a thank you to those of you who do shell out for a copy.
If you can't afford a copy of the trade, but like what you see in the webcomic, please feel free to share the comic, and this Kickstarter, to any comic reading friends. Sales are great, but as always, my primary aim is to get as many eyes on my work as possible.
Risks and challenges
What could go wrong?
This is an incredibly low-risk project.
The pages are all written, drawn and lettered.
The PDF is already assembled (apart from a few tweaks like adding backer names), and I have a trusty printer lined up who's produced seven single issues for me so far.
You are buying an incomplete story here, as Universe Gun will span 12 issues in total. Issue 8 is already finished, and will be printed as a single issue by April, which will allow me to print the second trade paperback later this year.
I'm already hard at work on issue 9, so at my current rate the final trade will be ready some time in 2018.
