What's the Found Slides, A Life Remembered project all about?

The Found Slides, A Life Remembered Kickstarter project is to fund publication of the first of a two-part graphic novel based on actual events that made news around the world. Volume one will be roughly fifty pages, in a standard graphic novel format published by Kablam, a publishing house specializing in printing books and graphic novels by small and independent artists (Kablam is not a vanity press).

The story is autobiographical and is based on real events which occurred in 2011 when I purchased a vintage slide projector from a thrift store in St. Petersburg, Florida. In the base of this projector were color Kodachrome slides taken in the early 1950s of a couple of families somewhere in America. The pictures were of incredible quality and a fascinating window into the postwar era, a slice of real Americana from the 1950s, not staged Hollywood scenes. These images are real history, a look at America at the pinnacle of its prosperity and optimism.

I had no hope at all of finding out who the people in the pictures were until I scanned them and put them onto my blog (www.magnumarts.blogspot.com), at which point I began receiving some tips from a global Star Wars costuming group I belong to, the 501st Legion. Members began poring over the pictures and providing me with information they had uncovered. It became a nationwide news story, and soon I was being interviewed on several television stations, and people around the world began following the story.

At the time this was taking place, I was undergoing a series of events at work which would would lead to a major life change, at the same time the Found Slides saga reached its conclusion. There were a few surprising twists before it was all over, and the story has a satisfying ending. The graphic novel has three plot lines that weave through it: the search for the people in the slides, the events unfolding at my job, and the assistance I received from my fellow members in the 501st Legion (the second volume will offer a fun look at what being in the 501st Legion is like).

What will the Found Slides, A Life Remembered donations be used for?

The donation goal will fund the initial print run of 300 or so copies of the first volume, the purchase of an ISBN number and bar code so that it can be sold on-line and in stores, plus ancillary publishing expenses.

The first volume introduces the discovery of the slides and the people involved in the story. The second volume will tell the story of the detective work using clues sent to me, and the conclusion of the story. Your support will help me share this story with the world!  Any amounts donated in excess of the goal will be allocated to the production of the second volume, which I have already started. Likewise, if the goal is not met, the project is not funded.

What other goals are there for this project?

Another result I hope for with this project is to create an environment for people who grew up in the 1950s to share their experiences with younger generations. I will be devoting space on my blog for memories, recollections, and even photographs (should people wish to share them). If you grew up in this era, share your stories with us, and as a society we all benefit.

In conclusion, this is a fun, uplifting story that has brightened the lives of people involved in it, and with your support, I can share it with a lot more people.
