Air is everywhere on the earth. The flowing air can change the moving path of the object. The faster the air moves, the greater the energy is. The jet airflow can isolate some objects. So when we make use of the airflow, we can protect ourselves from the rain drops. Then the airflow forms an umbrella without a visible cover.
Based on this idea, we designed various types of air umbrella with postgraduates from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics from July in 2012 to August in 2013.We also tested the air umbrellas on rainy days.
Luckily, one of our samples achieved the goal of protecting one or even more persons from the rain in the test in November 2012. But the product still needed more improvement. As the sample was designed to take a large amount of airflow, the top was big, which didn’t achieve the portable characteristic.
To design a better looking product, we cooperated with a few PhD graduates from Beijing University of Aeronautics andAstronautics to improve the design. After a year’s hard work, we finally improved the appearance of the umbrella which may influence the effect. But at least, we could really use it outdoor on rainy days.
In July 2014, we finished the new sample and colored the product to make it better-looking. And this sample is what we show as air umbrella-b in out pictures and videos.
Currently, we only put the air umbrella-b into practice. According to different demands of various users, we designed two more types of umbrellas based on air umbrella-b (basic style), that is, air umbrella-a (for female) and air umbrella-c( scalable).
Based on the appearance of umbrella-b, we made design drawings of air umbrella-a and air umbrella-c for your reference.
Air umbrella-a is mini and could be put in bags,It is about 30 centimeters in length and 500 grams in weight,It is not scalable.The battery life is about 15 minutes.
Air umbrella-b:it is the basic style.The umbrella is 50 centimeters in length and 800 grams in weight.The battery life is about 30 minutes.
Air umbrella-c is scalable.It is about 50 centimeters after shortened and 80 centimeters after extended.The umbrella weights about 850 grams.The battery life is about 30 minutes.
Risks and challenges
In July 2014, we decided the basic plan for the first product. The plan achieved improvement in various aspects such as efficiency, appearance, flexibility and practicability.
From October 2014 to July 2015, we will improve our products from various aspects such as appearance,and auxiliary function (including power display function and mobile power supply function)based on the plan.
In September 2015, the first improved products will come out from factory.
Before December 2015, the products will be sent to our supporters.
It will still take nearly 10 months to improve the product.After the completion, we will send all the parts to the manufacturers for production. And the competed products will be sent to our supporters.If the products can not be produced successfully,we will return all the fund to the supporters.Besides,if we are not able to complete the products and send them to our supporters before December 31st 2015, we will return all the money to the supporters before January 31st 2016.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The width of the air umbrella is just 34 millimetre
The noise is limited after we did many works,we limit the power,we Increase in air flow and reduce the speed of the motor,and there is no sharp noise ,sometimes you can just hear deep voice of air flow.To make it better,we added some material to absorb and reduce the noise .So the noise of the rain is much bigger than the air umbrella when it works.
We have to make more efforts as the requirements to the performance of the air umbrella are very high. Besides, there are other difficulties such as the battery life, smaller size and so on.
Based on the current technical conditions, the battery life of air umbrella can only last half an hour. Therefore, the products are only suitable for the users who are not demanding. Generally speaking, the products are more suitable for the urban citizens or people who has a car.
The price of the air umbrella is based on the current cost. The mass production may cost more than 60 dollars for each air umbrella. And it will cost more if there are fewer orders. The market price of the product is predicted to about 200 dollars.
The air umbrella is water proof，there is a power-charging connector inside the master switch,when you uncover the little button you could see it,with a quick-charge,you could obtain a full charge less than an hour(air umbrella-b and air umbrella-c),the air umbrella-a could be full charged within within half an hour,also you could choose the speed ,It's good for battery with low charge speed.

The space is more than 1m in diameter,And it will provide a bigger space if the rain is not so heavily ,so it is crowded for two people when it rains heavily,you could use it for two or more people when it is not so heavily rain.
Big and fast raindrops will be blown to a near distance while those small and slow raindrops will be blown to a farther distance. Generally speaking, most raindrops will be blown to 50-70 centimeters away. If two persons are more than two shoulders away from each other, they will not affect each other. Also, nearby pedestrians will also take umbrellas if it is raining heavily. In this way, the rain will not be blown to other pedestrians. If nearby pedestrians do not take umbrella and close, they will be affected more or less, but they will get wet in a rainy day if not taking umbrella anyway.
In general, when two persons are more than two shoulders away from each other, they will not affect each other. But if they are close to each other, they will be affected by some raindrops since disordered airflows will be generated in the place where airflows intersect with each other and the directions of raindrops will be affected.
If raindrops come down at an angle, you should hold the umbrella cover in a way that is perpendicular to the direction of the raindrops and the effect almost the same.
All of our tests and experiments were conducted under circumstances of heavy rains. Even some were conducted in light rains, there were some big raindrops occasionally. Those big raindrops dropped in a higher speed. Therefore, we can only guarantee the feasibility of the air umbrella when it is effective in heavy rains.
When the speed of wind reaches certain level, not even the umbrella you are using now is useful and so does the air umbrella. If the wind is not very high, the air umbrella can still deflect the natural wind and rain and work well. But if the speed of wind reaches and more than six levels, the natural wind will oppress the air flow generated by the air umbrella and therefore greatly decreased the scope of sheltering and affect the effect.
