Who is Carrie Thompson & what is Notes From My Therapist?
My work explores roots, rootlessness, and restlessness, generally in the context of my own upbringing as the child of a broken family. Most of my work is photographic, but I am also a writer and the editor of the New Moon Project. I am the recipient of 2015-2016 and 2010-2011 MN State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant for Photography along with a McKnight Artist Fellowship for Photographers in 2009. I am and have been Alec Soth’s studio manager since 2008.
My artist edition handmade photobook, Notes From My Therapist, is about my three years spent in therapy. The book came out of both my apprehensions about therapy, and need for therapy. In a recent exhibition of the work the book was installed inside of a waiting room. The waiting room was close to full-scale installed recreation of my therapist's waiting room. Inside of the waiting room the only reading material was my book, Notes From My Therapist and related writing. Jehra Patrick says it well in the press release for the show, “Carrie Thompson presents her artist book, Notes from My Therapist, editioned as casual reading material for passing time within her near-full-scale installed recreation of the waiting room for her therapist’s office. The book makes public the private act of participating in therapy. The full installation magnifies the moment of empathy, inviting audiences to take part in the anxiety of the anteroom while offering an intimate look into the vulnerabilities of the artist’s life and family.”
Why is this important?
I want to be able to make my book Notes From My Therapist more affordable. Currently my books are artist edition handmade photobooks that are not affordable for most. The artist edition handmade photobook is $250.00 per book. It takes me a day or more to make one book. I print and bind the book myself. Printing a Digital Indigo trade edition of my book at Shapco would make the book only $45.00 each and would save me so much time. This will also be my first trade edition book. This alone is invaluable to my artistic career.
Kickstarter is a great place to get the financial support needed to make a trade copy of Notes From My Therapist. With the support of others I will be able to print this book. I will also be able to have a designer layout the book for the printer. This will make the cost a lot less than the handmade version. This will also be my first trade edition book. This alone is invaluable to my artistic career.

Risks and challenges
I think my largest challenge will be balancing work, parenting, and this project. Thankfully I have been doing this type of balancing since my son was born five years ago. It will be a challenge, I might not be able to ship books as fast as I would like, but it will happen.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
