*Please check the Updates for announcements on new things coming to the Province League and a new stretch goal! Currently aiming for $10,000 (I know, I know) all the details are in the update! <3
My name is Trevor Holmes and this is my proposal for a new tournament series for Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game. Some know me as ArchitectGaming on the L5R Discord, for those that do not, I have been an active member of the community since Fantasy Flight Games released their re-make of ‘Old5R’ last year. I post regularly, mainly about Lion strategy on the L5R Facebook page and the Lion Discord channel, and I run the ArchitectGaming line of handmade laser etched wood tokens on Etsy. My position as a ‘maker of goods’ and my overall experience with multiple competitive card games since 1999 has given me invaluable experience in areas like community interaction and organized play, at the local and national level.
The purpose of this Kickstarter is to support the creation of a new, ‘in real life’ supplementary international tournament series that exists in support of the official sanctioned events offered by FFG at local stores and large conventions. This series will seek to satisfy the widespread demand from the L5R community for larger-scale events at an affordable price, and will welcome casual and competitive players alike. This series will be held at local gaming stores throughout the world and aims to fulfill the primary desires of Prizes, Affordability, Availability, Frequency. Events will be within driving distance, awesome prizes will be given for participation, performance and clan loyalty, and above all entry fee will be cheap! ($10-$15 depending on size of event).
To make this a reality, I will develop and maintain an online presence (website/Facebook and Discord groups) to market the series, coordinate with participating stores that wish to purchase prize kits and run events, and provide prize support for these events through my ArchitectGaming line of products. Future plans involve bringing in other community makers to offer a diverse range of exciting prizes for players to play for, and working with FFG and Cascade Games to develop integration with the official Kotei events.
The funds raised from this Kickstarter will go directly towards covering startup and maintenance costs, and will encompass website, product material and a lasercutter to help produce product. The goal of this Kickstarter is NOT to profit from the community, all of the rewards to backers essentially are pre-orders for unique products available only through the Kickstarter at a significant discount from my retail offerings. I will be contributing a large amount of my own savings to this endeavor, and I’m begging for your help!
How the Series Will Work
Once the Kickstarter is funded, I will purchase a lasercutter and material necessary to start producing product. Local stores interested in hosting events can plug in to the community through various social platforms I will curate (website, Facebook group, Discord channel) and start to promote their events, receive more info and purchase prize support kits. These kits are priced as cheap as possible to cover my time and costs and keep entry fee for players as low as it can be (see Prizes + Entry info here).
Once a store has purchased a Kit, the fun part begins! Stores work with players to schedule a tournament date that fits their local needs, and players can learn about upcoming events directly from the store or through multiple regularly updated social platforms. The goal is to provide every player with at least two events a month within driving distance. The events, round structure and prize support have been designed to provide a ‘Kotei-lite’ environment of competitive play that can be held start to finish on a single day.
At the conclusion of the event, stores will provide data on top finishers and clan performance back to me which will be incorporated into the site in the form of a regularly updated Online Leaderboard and future super awesome things I’ll reveal later. To keep things fresh, prizes will rotate seasonally. The primary goal through all of this is to satisfy a desire for players to play more L5R. Prize support, Leaderboard and clan stat tracking are all a part of a system that will hopefully keep players engaged and excited, so the game we love can keep growing!
Why You Should Be Interested
The Province League seeks to offer larger-scale competitive events similar to Koteis, but at the store level, using prize support from the community. Please note: The Province League seeks to enrich the Organized Play environment for L5R, NOT compete with it. Gaming stores are the lifeblood of our community, and hosting these events at local stores will help to grow the grassroots community of casual players. Offering more opportunities to play larger scale events will serve as a stepping stone for players ‘on the fence’ about investing travel/expense to Kotei events. Attending Province League events will help provide data on player ‘region density’ which will be given to FFG to make a case for them to invest more money/attention into L5R Organized Play, and hold events closer to where the players are. Through cooperation and proper integration into the Organized Play system, The Province League seeks to grow the game at all levels.
If you are interested in seeing this happen, please consider supporting the Kickstarter at any level! Every little bit helps and Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing model. If you are familiar with my products and have been thinking about purchasing product, these Kickstarter rewards are the best discount I’ll ever give on shop items. Plus, every item marked ‘exclusive’ will never be made again after the Kickstarter campaign concludes!
If you are on the fence, please head over to The Province League website, Facebook group or Discord channel. I’ll be happy to answer any questions/concerns, and if you have ideas on how to tweak/improve this model I’m open to all suggestions!
A note on how I set the goal amount: The laser cutter I am aiming to purchase is around $6,000 for the base model, and will probably cost about $7-8000 to get completely set up when factoring in shipping/ventilation, etc. I plan on putting over half of my own money into this endeavor. Kickstarter takes 5% of pledged funds, and Paypal (or similar payment services) take another 3%. In addition, I have to cover shipping for all of my rewards (as they are physical items) and shipping costs add to the pledge amount. With a $4000 goal, I'm expecting to only keep about 75% of that to contribute to my startup costs, basically less than half of what is required to get this thing off the ground.
Thank you, and I’ll see you in the League.

Risks and challenges
As we (myself as project creator, you as supporter) already share a common bond as members of the L5R community, most of the potential issues and challenges this project would face are already solved. The primary risk (not completing our funding goal) is solved thanks to the Kickstarter model, which is why I chose Kickstarter to fund my project. If we don't hit the goal, you don't lose money, simple as that. Accountability isn't a concern, as I'm personally invested (and invest-ing) in this project succeeding, both for myself and the community. Also, I already have over a year of experience and knowledge working with customers making products for L5R, experience that has helped guide me through the details of this project.
Depending on level of interest in this project I can see a possible bottleneck as the project is funded, and I work to simultaneously fulfill Backer pledges while producing kits for events. I am working to prevent this by communicating clearly with stores about when to schedule events, which will give me enough time to complete production on reward items as soon as possible.
Realistically, the greatest risk is a hypothetical situation where FFG decides they do not want this project to exist. I have communicated with Organized Play representatives about my intentions and I'm confident they would like to see this project succeed, as the opportunity to grow L5R through this project would be beneficial to their sales and event turnout numbers. That being said, L5R is their property and they could decide to implement a policy banning player-run events if they wish, though I think this is unlikely. Worst case, pledges will be fulfilled regardless and I'm sure an agreement or compromise could be reached if it came to that.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
