About this project
WE DID IT! We reached our goal. I can't thank those that have pledged enough. ...But it's not over. Please don't stop pledging. There are a few days left and we could use all we can get especially after being hit hard by Huricane Sandy.
Together we can make a difference. again, I thank those that have supported and thank in advance those that still may.
We couldn't publish this book without you
WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT
The main character is a young boy who wakes up the morning of career day and realizes that he has to stand before his teacher and class and tell them what he wants to be when he grows up.
The problem is, that even though there are so many jobs to choose from, he can't seem to find the one that fits.
Like many children, especially of color, he believes that there are limitations to his dreams...that is until he sees President Obama on television. It is at that point he realizes that he can become anything he wants to be...including President of the United States.
NO ONE TOLD ME I COULD BE PRESIDENT!, is an educational, rhyming book designed to inspire children to believe that there should be no limitations to their dreams, and that those dreams can be as big as they want them to be.
Until a few years ago, there weren't too many, if any, African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Asians, or Middle Eastern Americans, who believed that they could one day become the President of this great country. Then came President Barack Obama. The day he was sworn in, the perception of the world, be it that of a child or adult, changed. All of a sudden what seemed impossible became possible.
NO ONE TOLD ME I COULD BECOME PRESIDENT!, with it's beautifully painted artwork and rhythmic tone, reinforces that belief in a way that children will understand and enjoy. It is a book that they will want to read or have read to them over and over again.
...and who knows, maybe one of those kids will grow up to be the greatest leader this country has ever had.
Hurricane Sandy Affected us on several Levels. Loss of Power for almost 3 weeks as well as house damage...all at a highly unexpected cost.
We are closing in on our goal, and trust me, it hasn't been an easy task. That said, please, we need all we can get so please, don't stop pledging even if we meet our goal. Every little bit helps.
UPDATE: While reading NO ONE TOLD ME I COULD BE PRESIDENT to kids at an elementary school in New York, the principal asked me if I had a version for readers who were beyond rhyming books. That question changed the way I saw this project.
I decided that I was going to make this book for two age groups by giving everyone two versions of the book for the price of one.
There will be the fully painted/illustrated version for young kids This book will remain a rhyming book and will be aimed at preschoolers to Third graders.
In the rear of the book there will be a young reader short story version for those a little older.
Both will tell the same story. The story of a young boy who is inspired to dream big.
The concept of this book is to inspire kids to dream and instill in them a belief that anything is possible.
The more kids we reach, the more we can inspire.
WHY PUBLISH THIS BOOK
NO ONE TOLD ME I COULD BE PRESIDENT! is not about being a Democrat or a republican. It's not about politics at all. Its about about knowing that no matter who you are or what your race or background is, we all have wings to spread so that we can soar as high as our dreams allow.
Where I grew up, in the Bronx, it was common to hear a parent say "People like us don't grow up to do those kind of things" I remember what my mother once told me, when I was six or seven and stated that I was going to be President. she said:
"That will never happen. Why not choose something more realistic." (true story)
That is something I will remember for the rest of my life. Her words had impact and like many children of color, especially in middle income and low income neighborhoods, I believed that my only hope was in music, sports or other familiar jobs that my parents or my friend's parents had. Not that there was anything wrong with those jobs...they just weren't what I wanted to do with my life. As for sports and music, unfortunately, I wasn't any good in either. The criminal world was an option (since it was so blatantly present in my environment), but even as an impressionable youth, I knew that wasn't the way I wanted to go.
Then came THE COSBY SHOW. The father was a doctor, and the mother was a lawyer. I remember friends of mine (and their parents as well) stating how unbelievable that was. They honestly believed that families similar to that, with two professional parents, couldn't possible exist.
The sad thing is that, after all these years there are still people that think like that.
I am and have been an advocate toward children thinking big and dreaming big.
It's important that we instill in ALL children that the sky is the limit. They need to understand their self worth as well as understand that with a dream and effort, they can surprise themselves as to what they are capable of accomplishing.
This was an email I received from a supporter in Australia. I wanted to share it because it touched me deeply and reflects exactly why this book was created.
President Obama has had a huge effect on my seven year old boy, he asks about him, gets excited when we see him on tv, I see he is inspired somehow. When I saw your book on Kickstarter I was delighted. Good luck mate, can't wait.
Regards, Adam Frawley

ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR
Ryan Samuels is one of those artists whom can blow you away with the stroke of a pencil, pen or paint brush.
He has brought such beauty, elegance and realness to this project. I believe it is because of his images that children from around the world will read this book and see themselves...and believe.
I posted this unfinished cover because it gave us an idea to have a page like this at the end of the book where any child could cut out a picture of themselves and put their face where the little boy from the story would be.
We really need way more then we are asking for, so please, even if we reach our goal, continue to pledge until we run out of time.
Thank you in advance for your support.

Risks and challenges
Our biggest challenge is simply to create a great story that kids will want to read as well as learn from. We want to produce a product that is as beautiful as possible. We really wanted kids to see themselves when they held No One Told Me I Could Be President. It is a monumental task to produce and market any book, but we know we are up to the task.
And it takes the right people to achieve greatness--we'll need to identify the best people and add to our team to make this Book as amazing as possible. The story is there and the artwork exceeded my expectations. There's a lot of talented folks out there but finding the ones that share a passion for this project took time diligence, and is already paying off.
Everyone involved loves the book, and that is a great place to start.
Lastly on the rewards: we will update the production blog as diligently as possible but bear with us with any delays between posting. There is a lot at stake, and we are putting everything we have into making sure this book reaches as many people as possible.
Thanks for the support and thanks in advance for putting up with any delays we may encounter in delivery (hopefully there will be none). The whole process as well as the reward thing is new challenge for us--but we're looking forward to it!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
